Not that there's anything wrong with that set per se, it's just a little boring to me.
Playskool: My First Dead Show
Consider the demographic of the people at the show. I'd venture a guess that more than 80% have never seen a Grateful Dead show, so I don't think it's really an issue. This setlist is ideal for introducing those new to the scene given the amount of hits, but I personally love a lot of those songs and I would've been psyched to have a show like that, no matter how "safe" it might appear on the surface.

There's no need to be miserable quacks about it.
Relax bro. Yes, this is an ideal setlist for new fans, which is a reason people who aren't new fans might not be that stoked about it.

I'm not a new fan by any means but I was stoked about that setlist. Regardless of how you felt, this was a great setlist for both new and old fans alike - are you really that bored by the songs there? If you expecting something like Cream Puff War or Mr. Charlie at Bonnaroo, you're out of your mind.
Last night's show made me even more excited for the tour, but I guess I won't bother hyping anything here if people are going to be this negative...

SET 1: Jam> Truckin'(7)> Smokestack Lightning (2)> Bertha (8), Playing in the Band(9) > Bird Song (6) > Tennessee Jed (7)> Shakedown Street (9) > Passenger (1) >Bird Song (6), Casey Jones (6)
SET 2: Help on the Way (7) > Slipknot! (7)> Franklin's Tower (7) > Scarlet Begonias (8)> Fire on the Mountain (8), Lady With A Fan > Terrapin Station (6)> Drums > Space> The Other One (7)> Wharf Rat (5)> Franklin's Tower (7)
ENCORE: Touch of Grey (6)
So I added in the play counts for each of these songs from setlist.fm. It just would have been nice to see them cycle a few more lesser played songs, particularly in the second set. I'm a fan of Black Throated Wind, Crazy Fingers, Lovelight, Morning Dew, which are all in ones they've played 1-2 before, but it's not really about the lack of any particular songs for me, just the variety.

I love how you come in here with "people will find something to complain about with this setlist" then lose your mind when people do, in fact, have critiques.

Whatever dude. I guess I should've known better, given how certain people here feel like they're elitists and know better than anyone else. Sorry the sets weren't obscure enough for you

Dude, you're clearly overreacting to a relatively harmless opinion.

I'm just really tired of all of the negative people around here who instead of sharing excitement would rather critique the sets. Maybe this forum isn't for me if people are going to be this abrasive and unwelcoming.

I just don't see how anyone here is being as negative as you claim. A few people said they would have preferred a different setlist, but I don't see anyone saying it was a shitty performance. And it's odd for someone who just referred to others as "miserable fucks" to be complaining about negativity on this forum.

Isn't it fun and interesting to critique sets of bands who shake it up a lot?

It's more of the whole Inforoo forum as a whole than the thread, I guess. Whatever, it's useless arguing and getting frustrated about nothing important at this point. Different strokes for different folks...
What lesser known songs were people hoping to hear?

It is jamband culture to discuss/critique setlists no matter how much you enjoyed said show. No need to take offense to any of it. Personally I could have done with 1 Bird Song and 1 Franklin's Tower and a different song each time instead of going back into (I didn't hear a single note of show, going on setlist posted only) Personal favorites of mine not played are The Wheel, Ruben and Cherise, and Throwing Stones.

I thought it was a good set too. I would rather hear a song by song play through of the Greatest Hits CD than a setlist that had stuff like the rare B-Side of Dick's Pick 77 from the European Record Store Day release day though, so maybe I don't know anything. I like the Dead, but not enough to know more than 30-40 songs out of the million they have. But I would have liked to hear Friend of the Devil, Samson and Delilah, Mexicali Blues, Ripple, and Box of Rain.

It looks like Box of Rain was cut from the set
I personally would've loved to see a New Minglewood Blues, Mississippi Halfstep Uptown Toodleloo or Dark Star. Really surprised Samson and Delilah wasn't in the set given Donna's presence. What were people's thoughts on her being there? I wouldn't mind if she joined them the rest of the tour, but I doubt that'll happen

I'm more a fan of a feel of the show other than a particular set list. I do like a bust out or something I haven't heard/seen at every tour stop though as well. That show just felt special. I was excited watching it. I saw this post on the Grateful Dead reddit and it made me tear up a bit. This is perfect:
"I just got back from Bonnaroo, where some of my favorite bands played. I'm 21 and didn't know very much of The Grateful Dead but saw all of Dead & Company's set, and my god, I don't know how to put it into words. I had a great spot and was surrounded by the most beautiful people; there was a woman blowing bubbles next to me as they would flow past my face, in front of me was another woman dancing while covered in glow sticks all over her body, and everyone else was just so positive and was hugging, dancing, and high-fiving together. I felt like this experience truly reached into my soul and saved me. I was either dancing or frozen still in awe. Even though I wasn't familiar with the music prior to the show, this was the best musical performance I have ever seen and probably will ever see. I honestly feel that this show changed my brain chemistry. Please help me out and post some of your favorite songs that I may forget to come across. My life has truly been changed. This experience was so unbelievable that I feel the meaning of my life is to spread the happiness I felt during this set and tell people the story about the time I saw them."

great post, thanks for sharing.
that happened to me at my first phish run in 2000. second show of the Lakewood run. it was a completely overwhelming experience that changed the course of my life.
It makes me happy that so many first timers to the Dead or "jam scene" in general were so moved by Sunday's performance.
Yeah that's awesome. I only talked to the 2 of my kids who went and one of their friends. They were in a group of 20+ all born early 90s. All 3 of them listed Dead and Company as a top show at Bonnaroo along with Pearl Jam and J Cole. They missed a few sets due to bracelet issues, and two of these 3 were EDM geeks as recently as the last year or so but not without love for rock and hiphop. While my 2 have both seen Phish, WSP, Cheese and love jam and jamtronica, the Dead just was never on the radar. But they were glowing about those 2 sets. Proudness.
Who are you volunteering through? I'm looking to do the same, not sure which of the two shows yet, might try for both.
HeadCount. I know reverb was still looking for volunteers.
I was looking into HeadCount as well. I'll check out both! If I don't end up getting in I'll just grab a cheap ticket. I've been on a major Dead kick in the days since that Roo set. I think that show will be what takes me from being a casual fan to really delving into their catalog and history. I just wish they were playing other festivals!
