I'm still holding in for big ears... its just too easy to justify since all the venues are within a half mile of my house... I definitely hope the rest of the lineup pulls more of a spark for me though. John Adams is okay but I don't think he is anything special.
Did you guess correctly? Winner of the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Music, composer John Luther Adams will serve as Composer-in-Residence for the 2016 edition of the internationally acclaimed Big Ears Festival, taking place March 31-April 2 in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Just this year, Adams won the Grammy Award for “Best Classical Composition” for his powerful, sweeping orchestral work, 'Become Ocean.' The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Steven Schick, will perform 'Become Ocean,' along with other works, on the opening night of the #BigEarsKnox 2016 weekend.
In addition to the Orchestra’s performance of 'Become Ocean,' the Big Ears weekend will feature several of Adams’ definitive compositions, culminating in an unforgettable outdoor performance, details of which will be announced in the coming weeks. We are deeply honored to have this great American composer join us for Big Ears 2016.
Big Ears is also introducing a new ticketing structure alongside the full lineup of 40-50 artists on Tuesday, October 20. Tickets will go on sale Friday, October 23 at 12pm ET. Get full details on John Luther Adams and tickets here:
First of all, we’ve got three very special programs each evening at the Tennessee Theatre, performances that will reward the total immersion and full concentration of all who attend. To help support that, we’re separately ticketing each of these evenings – with reserved seats – to create the best possible environment to enhance the concert experience. Tickets for these evenings will only be available to those who have purchased a weekend pass – or, if you purchased a single day pass, you will also have the opportunity to purchase a ticket for that evenings’ Tennessee Theatre performance.
But, if you don’t want to, you don’t have to…and as a result, weekend passes as well as single days passes giving you access to nearly 50 shows at all of the other venues will be more affordable than ever. And no tiered pricing…the tickets will stay the same price until they are gone, gone, gone.
Due to popular demand, we’re also offering a very limited number of VIP Sonic Explorer Passes for the weekend. These amazing passes will give you access to everything – reserved seats for the Tennessee Theatre, special bypass-the-line entrance at all of the other venues, plus additional perks like invites to a secret show or two, special talks and hangs with some of the artists, some cool memorabilia and more.
I'm not sure how I feel about that.

There's going to be more Americana style stuff and perhaps more rock too. I think they're trying to actually make some money this year so they can keep doing it. Can't say that I blame them.
I think it all depends on who the programming is each evening and how much the cost is. Come the 20th, I could be totally ok with it and I could be fucking furious.
Hopefully people don't catch on that if they want to see americana and rock in knoxville they can stay at the holiday inn and see all the americana and rock they can stand for a $5 cover at any bar here on any given weekend...

Music festivals: now with DLC!
I have really realized over the last year or so that I could go broke easily with $5 or $10 tickets in this town.
I think this pricing change is a function of the demographic for the festival. It's a much older demographic than your average festival which generally means more spending money. If it matches with the last few years, I may not hit it up at all as I have rarely been in the Tennessee during the weekend.

The two big points for me are: We're going to have an announcement of 40 - 50ish artists next week. So we're roughly looking at the same number of shows as last time (making half days seem doubtful) AND the full day tickets are going to be cheaper (not sure how the add ons are going to affect the total cost). But, as long as there are alternative shows during the evenings to catch, I can see myself skipping the add ons. Going to reserve all judgement until I see the artists & add on prices next week. I am enjoying John Luther Adam's music, but he, alone isn't a draw for me... and like others I'm not super excited about the artists that they've hinted about. I like each of them just fine, but I wouldn't travel specifically to see any of 'em. So... we'll see!
The fact that AC's post on FB listed a bunch of genres except Electronic has me scared. No eletronic acts at all is a deal breaker for me.
Was it this?
Next week we'll announce another 40 or so amazing artists from the worlds of folk, Americana, jazz, Irish music, alternative rock, classical and beyond....and more details of what's certain to be another unforgettable weekend.
Just read the email blast and noticed this tidbit.
And speaking of venues, in addition to shows at the Historic Tennessee Theatre and the lovely Bijou Theatre, we’ll be back in the Square Room and The Standard; plus we’ll be debuting a fabulous new performance space that no one knows anything about yet…it’s going to be fabulous…but…please…ssshhhhhhhh!…at least for now.
Should we asume that's an outdoor venue? They seem to be planning something around JLA.

1) Separate tickets for main evening performances (read: headliner?) could very well mean cheaper weekend/day passes, notwithstanding the usual annual inflation.
