lol wut?
1. I love Outkast ALOT but you can not compare Outkast to NWA in terms of social/societal significance. 2. He can't refer to 3 Stacks as "Dre" when he is talking about copying a movie about the original Dre

Eh, I don't buy that. The music Outkast made blows the doors off NWA. And this thing where we're all now pretending NWA was the rap Beatles is a little revisionist, IMO.

I would agree except there may not be an Outkast without NWA.

That's always the worst way to argue for any group, IMO. If NWA hadn't come along, how do we know that someone else wouldn't have filled those shoes? Should we keep revisiting this and say that without Run DMC, there would have been no NWA, and without the Sugarhill Gang, there would have been no Run DMC, and without the funk and DJ culture established by the early gangs in the Bronx, the Sugarhill Gang wouldn't have existed. When you get right down to it, we should just make a documentary about Robert Moses, because if he hadn't crippled an entire community through the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway, he wouldn't have caused the mass emigration that followed and provided the impetus for the very development of the original hip-hop culture.
Long story short, Outkast was/is dope as fuck, made better music than NWA (who, as Horn mentioned, are now suddenly having their role in history blown way the fuck out of proportion), and have arguably just as big of a legacy.
I don't disagree with any of this. I'm one of the biggest Outkast fans there is. There's no denying the greatness of that group or their influence. I couldn't say that they're more important than NWA though.
I'm not questioning the legacy, musical importance, or artistry of Outkast. I just don't see how you can get a movie out of it. Straight Outta Compton worked mainly because of the social relevence. It also worked because of the backstage drama that played out very publicly and ended in tragedy. I don't see how you get any of that from Outkast. What would the story of an Outkast movie be?

Not to mention how hugely important Outkast is for southern hip hop. Maybe there was a larger societal reaction to the gangster rap that NWA made but I think the style of rap that Outkast, UGK, Goodie Mob, Geto Boys et al spearheaded is every bit as "important."
Plus NWA is a little older so it's probably easier to wax nostalgic about them.

If you can't get a good two hour story out of the early Dungeon Family goings-on then I don't know what to tell you. Not saying there HAS to be an Outkast movie and that it's an injustice they don't have one and yada yada yada but still, it's totally feasible.
If they decided to make an Outkast movie that was less biopic and more ridiculous comedy featuring their music; that could work. But they already tried that; it was called Idlewild. If they want to give it another go, sign me up for Outkast in Space. You can start it like its a biopic and then have it take a crazy turn. Oh man, I should've been a screen writer.

There could /should definitely be an Outkast movie. Their music pretty much changed everything in the south. Their influence spread across the world. Also I think there is enough that would interesting about the two characters, especially Andre3000. That guy could probably hold up a movie by himself.

One hundred percent. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik was a huge break from the NY/LA styles that were popular in the mid 90s. Outkast's continued success along with the work of their contemporaries really paved the way for styles of hip hop that are commonplace nowadays.
I mean I agree they made phenomenal music. But if you watch Straight Outta Compton, the parts where they made music was done in montages that totaled maybe 10 min of screen time. That's not a movie.

Definitely. What I always say is every single person in my high school could probably still to this day quote all of Outkast lyrics. Everyone loves Outkast. I think even more than the music it brought people together, because that was the one thing everyone had in common. I can't think of another group in my lifetime that is as universally loved.
Again, totally agree the music was great. Breath of fresh air in a genre that was spinning it's wheels at the time. I just don't see how that is a movie.
I vote for Outkast in Space if they have to make a movie. Gotta take off.
