Pretty standard "person overcomes disability" biopic. You could do worse (hello Theory of Everything) and you could do better.
I actually enjoyed both The King’s Speech & The Theory of Everything. Though I think The Theory of Everything could've been.... more. I’m not sure what exactly I mean by that, but I’m sure you know what I mean. Lol.

I definitely see where you're coming from.
The ending just ruins the movie for me. Specifically the point where he imagines getting up to pick up the pen.
I liked it. If I were to rank all the best picture winners in the 20 or so years through 2015 (haven't seen the last few years), I'd rank it solidly in the middle. I don't think it should have won over The Social Network, but hey, that's the Oscars for you.
On that note, has anyone ever seen Jupiter Ascending? What a terrible piece of shit.
Accurate asessmet. In fact, I would go so far as to say huge flaming piece of shit. You think Redmayne thought, this is so God awful, I'm going to go out of my way and make it worse?

There’s no other explanation. I’m sure he read the script and said, “fuck it. Let’s just have some fun and see how bad it can get. I’m getting paid either way.”
I saw American Beauty within the past few years (before the whole Spacey shitstorm) and thought it was still enjoyable, but not nearly as great as it seemed 20 years ago. What was fairly groundbreaking at the time has since been done to death, and done much better.
In a similar vein, The Usual Suspects doesn't hold up at all. The ensemble cast bolsters a few standout moments, but overall, it's kinda meh.
Sleepy and I have made a pact to never discuss Sarah Silverman and J. Law ever again. #handledlikeadults
Just an update: this is still accurate even now that we’re married. It literally just came up two days ago and Jack had to remind me of the pact. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Honestly, I’m not surprised. I’d probably rewatch it still, but I feel like it’d take on a whole new tone in the era of #metoo and post-Spacey-gate.
Also, just re-read this whole thread and I’ve checked a bunch of the movies listed off the list. But there’s also still a bunch that I haven’t seen. So, lose the battle, win the war I guess.

Yeah the Social Network is a masterpiece and one of my favorite movies so I'm prejudiced against King's Speech just cuz of that.

I've seen this definitely more than once, but I never really paid attention to it. So with that movie, if you don't pay attention, does it count as seeing it? I'll let you decide on that one.
Bumping this thread bc I just had to explain to my coworkers how I don't watch movies. The conversation started bc someone was talking about Colin Firth and i asked "Do I know who Colin Firth is?"... looked up his bio and yes. I have seen 1 of his several movies.
Me: "Oh, he was in The King's Speech. Who was he in that?" My entire office: ".....The King!?"
Made me laugh that this is such common knowledge about me and yet here I am, still impressing people with how terrible I am.

I would've put money on you having watched What A Girl Wants.
I would've lost money on you having watched What A Girl Wants.
Alright, I still have a couple of personal faves that I don't think were asked here:
Real Genius Valley Girl Say Anything... The Italian Job (Remake)
On the topic of remakes, you mentioned that you had seen the remake of Four Weddings And A Funeral? That was in 2015 so you couldn't have been referring to the TV series (unless you're a time traveler - are you a time traveler?) so were you confusing it with a different movie or did you just think that it was a remake?

I actually have seen What A Girl Wants! We watched again not long ago bc Cap'n Mac had never experienced the amazing Amanda Bynes classic, and I needed to school him. I didn't realize that it was Colin Firth tho until I rewatched it.

I have seen none of those except The Italian Job remake with all the mini coopers. I remember seeing it in theatres with friends when going to the movies by yourselves was cool. I haven't seen it since then tho. And you'll be thrilled to know that they apparently remade Valley Girl this year with Logan Paul in it... bc that's what's happening in 2020 apparently.
Re: Four Weddings and a Funeral... I've looked this up and it appears I may have been thinking of Death at a Funeral. But I do also live in the future, so there ya go.
Do not watch the remake of Valley Girl. Do watch the original with a very young Nic Cage. It's obviously dated (He's a punk rocker! She's a valley girl!) but it's a ton of fun and the soundtrack's pretty great. Also, making girls watch this movie was my go-to move in high school and college.
Incidentally, Martha Coolidge directed that and Real Genius. (Real Genius has some really clever dialogue and a really fun performance from Val Kilmer - who knew he could be fun?)
Re: Say Anything...
I am a big fan of 80's/90's John Cusack and Say Anything... is at the top of the list. Grosse Pointe Blank is great, too. I love High Fidelity but it's apparently polarizing amongst people who have read the book. (I have and I still love the movie.) Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Hot Pursuit, The Sure Thing - all worth watching.
Yeah the Social Network is a masterpiece and one of my favorite movies so I'm prejudiced against King's Speech just cuz of that.
Excited for Cats though! Same director as KS.
Soooo..... tell us. What did you think of CATS?!
Saw Cats in the theater and again later at home. It's not a good movie, but I think people who would like the musical would like it fine. Seemed to me all the problems with it would have been shared by the stage production, except that the arrangements might have been more robust on-stage, from what I've heard. Some of the dancing was entertaining. That was the *best* thing about it.
Cats is weird. It's basically just characters introducing themselves in song for two hours, nothing really happens, and ultimately you learn that cats aren't dogs. I'm not sure if the movie will achieve the cult status of the Room or something like that, but I'm glad it exists.

is it so bad it’s good? I’ve debated whether I should watch it. I do love a good bad movie from time to time.

I would definitely watch it if you have any interest. It could be better, if it was worse, but it is good how bad it is.
