I want to do a solo international trip at the end of August. I think I'd like to go somewhere for 10 days and have a balance of city and nature adventures. My first thought was Stockholm and Lauterbrunnen but I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions.
I was planning on probably heading somewhere in Europe for ease of travel but would be open to suggestions in South America too.
Oh and if there are any cool music-related events in Europe in that time period please mention that!
There's music festivals in Zurich and Helsinki in August. I would definitely recommend Switzerland. Just take trains around visiting different cities for days. Beautiful nature adventures and awesome cities.

I've been in Croatia for the last week, it's really cheap and beautiful and at the end of August there's a really sweet looking electronic music fest called Dimensions.
Thank you both for this! It really helps to have some suggestions to plan off of. Last night I was at the stage of, "Uh... Europe?"
And every music festival mentioned looks pretty awesome. This should be a fun choice.
I wound up picking Switzerland for my adventure, btw. It would've been double the miles to get there in time for either of those music fests so I guess I'm just going to stick to hiking.
I booked my trip for 10 days. Fly in and out of Zurich and my loose plan is to go Zurich - Lucerne - Bern - Lautrebrunnen and then Zermatt if I have time. Looks like that will all be really easy to do by rail so thanks for that tip, Phi.
So now... if anyone has any must-sees in Switzerland I'd greatly appreciate it!

I'd recommend interlaken as a great base for exploring the alps - go up the cable cars to Murren (or higher) and just hike down. I thought it was just out of this world gorgeous. I also thought nearby towns Gimmelwald and Grindelwald were gorgeous.
I found Zurich pretty boring and incredibly expensive - so I would ration my time there pretty heavily. If you have time - getting to Basel and across the border into Freiburg, Germany is a quick jolt of a similar but very different culture.

Cheapest flying options and the best time to book?
I am sure this has been discussed multiple times, so feel free to leave a link.
I read an article that said Tuesday's and 50 days out for domestic flights is the sweet spot for cheapest rates. As far as cheapest airlines: Fontier, Spirit, and Allegiant are the cheapest, but they charge for carry-ons and they're the epitome of a no frills airline. I've also heard they're unreliable, but I've never had a problem with any of them. Good for short trips that you can just pack a book bag for ("personal items" are free). After that I just use Orbitz or book directly through AA bc I have an Aadvantage card.

Where are you flying and from where?
Would like to fly from Tri-Cities TN or Asheville. Not sure where to...looking at either San Diego or Mexico (planning a honeymoon). From all the prices I have seen, it's half the price to fly from Charlotte to San Deigo instead of flying from Asheville (I guess because it's a direct flight?). And that is still at $420 per person, which seems high.
Flown a few times, but never been in charge of the booking and such.

Thanks for the info! Sidebar - are you still in the states?

That's pretty standard to get across the country. ATL to everything west of Denver is pretty much always $400 (at least on Delta).
Read through www.airfarewatchdog.com/ to see what deals you can find. I've seen a lot of fantastic deals on travel to Europe in the last few weeks.
The best thing to do though is fuck around with Google Flights. It's the best resource I know of for seeing what rates are available.

I am. I move to Sydney on August 26th, but will be on this side of the country until August 16th. In FL right now, then will be kinda all over the place in the month that follows (TN-IL-NY, then CA till I leave)..
Also, I second flying out of ATL for cheaper fares, and using Google Flights to compare rates from everywhere at once.

If you decide on Mexico, I highly recommend using a site like cheapcaribbean.com or bookit.com and bundling your resort and airfare. You can save hundreds of dollars.

Traveling to Pittsburgh for a three-day weekend to watch the Cardinals at PNC Park. Would love a few good restaurant/bar recommendations. Preferably in or around downtown.

We'll be traveling to Portugal next year for our friends' wedding. I'm looking to make the wedding the end part of a larger vacation since I've never been to Europe.
It's still over a year out but since this is a whole new level of vacation planning for me (and I'm super excited), I wanted to just start getting a grasp of when to book flights and all the little details that will probably get missed since neither me or boyfriend have travelled to Europe before.

Fatheads for life. On East Carson St. Tessaro is great too, my childhood friend owns a bar almost across the street there called Caliente, great pizza and beers there.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!
You should definitely check TAP Portugal as the airline. I've never used it, but last year (I checked around November-December) I was searching for flight prices for this year's Primavera Barcelona (which happens at the first weekend of June), and one-way price from NYC to Portugal was around $200. Are you only visiting Portugal, or planning other cities/countries as well?

Hope you have a great time! So jealous already.
Thanks!
I'm looking to take at least 2 weeks and do a few other places. I'm not completely sure where in Portugal the wedding is yet. Somewhere near Porto is my guess because that's where the groom is from. I'm thinking maybe 2-3 other cities/countries would be good. I'd love to do the UK, but that might be too much traveling about and better suited to be its own separate trip.
On this last trip, we finally skipped the hotel and joined Airbnb. The experience was really good and we're now considering it for a European trip, next year.
Has anyone done this? Would you recommend it or just stay in a hotel.

I travel a lot for work and for fun and I strongly prefer Airbnb over a traditional hotel. Mostly because I feel way more comfortable in a house than a sterile hotel room. Plus you'll pretty much always get a better deal per night.
But yea, I did a trip across Netherlands/Belgium/France all on Airbnb two years ago and am currently planning a similar trip in Switzerland. I had wonderful experiences across the board. Good prices, good locations, and all of our hosts had recommendations for us in the city which was wonderful.
My strategy was to figure out what section of each city we wanted to stay in. Set the search parameters (price, private room, wifi, etc) then use the map to narrow your search. Open tabs with with your options and compare photos and user reviews. The more the better. It's a little more legwork than just booking a hotel but I love doing stuff like that.
Where are you headed? I bet Katy Mae can recommend where you should stay no matter where you go. I think she's been everywhere.
Also fun tip you can usually book experiences on Airbnb too. I see lots of tour groups offering guided walks or bike rides on there. And keep your eye out for hostels or funky art hotels if that's something your interested in. Also take note of the amenities they mention in the description. If everyone says, "Close to such and such," it's probably a site worth checking out.

That's good to hear. It seems you can save a bit of money that way. I'm torn because it's gonna be our 10 year anniversary trip and for that reason alone, I'm leaning towards at least one night in something fancy-pants. Options though.
Still in the planning stages and many moons to go. Right now we have 10 days that we can realistically be away. Thinking about 4 days in Paris and another 4 for Le Guess Who? Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands. $ for her and 4 for me. Makes the PERFECT anniversary present for us.

That sounds like a hell of a trip. And poke around on Airbnb. They have ALL types of rooms. You could easily book somewhere fancy, shmancy on there in Paris.

we are going to paris and belgium next month and have airbnb booked for both places. i've only used it for osheaga last year, but had a great experience then. since it's our first time anywhere like this, and we travel based on anthony bourdain recommendations, we booked a cool hotel he suggests for just the first night. maybe i'll have more useful info for you this time next month.
Airbnb is honestly the way to go. I used it all throughout Europe and it's so nice to have like a real kitchen to cook in when you don't feel like going out to eat. It's also really cheap, especially if you look in advance.
