Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I won't believe that description until Bonnaroo confirms it themselves. It seemed too bizarre/over-the-top to be real. Also, Bonnaroo has never had that kind of info available this early. At most we get key members/basic theme (Soul Superjam or Bluegrass Superjam). I'm convinced that's a Photoshop.
It must have been mentioned already, that "the Super Jam"'s description is actually the "About Us" section of a band called SuperJam. So I wouldn't doubt that Bonnaroo booked this cheap cover band called "SuperJam" in an attempt to be funny.
Ahh that explains it. It was just auto-filled from some database.
Now that I know that, I'm actually kinda disappointed. That was the only surprising thing on the lineup. Surprising in a bad way, but at least it was generating morbid curiosity.

Paul Peck isn't involved this year, so it may be reflective of that.
Wow, really? First I've heard of that. Interesting.
I've been having trouble vocalizing what I don't like about this lineup, but this quote set it off for me. It's a lot of radio music, but I actually listen to the radio and I like pop music, so that's not really my problem. It's more that it's radio music for people who would never listen to the radio. It's a bunch of second tier pop acts that most people like, but aren't popular enough to ignite a backlash. Ellie Goulding, for example, is perfectly fine, but she's not a tier 1 pop star, and she's not a critical darling like a Sia, Robyn, Grimes. She's just safe. J Cole is supposed to appeal to Drake fans, but he isn't actually Drake. They got Miguel instead of The Weeknd. Death Cab is the safe indie band that everyone used to like but is clearly on the decline, like seeing Weezer on a lineup 3-4 years ago, or Smashing Pumpkins before that, rather than someone still on the come up like Vampire Weekend or Sufjan Stevens. It's a bunch of mainstream stuff, but nothing risky or terribly interesting.
And when they did book someone interesting at the top of the card, like Tame Impala or LCD or even the Dead, there's not much further down that's similar. They didn't even try to throw electronic music fans a bone beyond LCD Soundsystem. You'd think that if they're spending a (reported) large amount of money for one band, they'd throw a few more things on the lineup to appeal to the fans of that act they're hoping to attract. I'd love to see Bonnaroo do with the Christmas Barn what Okeebochee is doing with the Jungle Stage, but even short of that someone like Todd Terje or Simian Mobile Disco would add a little spark to the middle of the lineup.
And looking back at that 2008 lineup, it definitely lacks that totally bananas "great artists from all sorts of genres" thing they used to do. Bonnaroo used to be the "where else could you see Hall and Oates followed by Rae Sremmurd" type of place, but this lineup is very down the middle.
This is what I've been fixated on, that I just have not been able to wrap my head around. What is the point in throwing large sums of money at these 3 headliners, if nothing on the undercard is really for the people that would be excited for these headliners? I've been trying to figure out if this is a strategy or not, to try and attract 2 different subsets of fans. Because if they are gonna throw a few million dollars at the dead and LCD, why wouldn't they back up that investment by spending a little bit more money to get a well rounded deeper undercard? A few higher level undercard acts certainly couldn't have broken the bank.

Another fucking cover band? Just because Lez Zeppelin was good in 08 doesn't mean we need to keep doing this shit.
I guess if anything, at least there is some hope for a good SuperJam still
A good cover band can be a fun show. Bustle in your Hedgerow and Dark Star Orchestra put on awesome sets. Unchained.....well......not so much.
Mostly referring to Unchained. Dark Star is in the same vein as Lez in that they are actually a good cover band. Bustle was similar to Atomic Bomb. A bunch of highly regarded artists getting together to honor somebody.
This group looks like they play parking lots and church festivals. Much like unchained
This is finally the year where all the friends I've petitioned to come with me are finally on board.
The worst part is, as entry-level concert goers, they're ecstatic.
I've seen this posted a few times, that people who are not music snobs/nerds are pretty excited about this lineup. If you don't mind me asking, what specific acts are your friends seeing on this lineup that are making them excited? I'm a 34 year old music snob and am wondering if I just don't understand what music most people like anymore.
I think people I know would consider me a music snob, in school for it, and gone to Roo 5 years and 5 different fests. This is my favorite undercard to date probably because of my age, 21. A lot of these bands are big up and comers in the online social scene, or were bands that were important in our formative adolescent years. Like death cab. And then there's other popular bands like two door who aren't a radio band, but popular to people who actually care about music enough to go out of their way to discover it. This festival has what I personally want, and what I think others my age want that are into music. If I want to delve into an interesting artists catalog, I can do that at home and discuss it with friends, and maybe catch their solo tour. Where when my age they seem to want three things from a festival: go for a fun party (generic edm), cool and hip but not super massive bands (tame impala), and some different chill acts that would be hard to see (vulfpeck). Surprisingly, my demographic doesn't seem to care much about headliners, expect when they are rap or hip hop based. It definitely seems like my age group is going for the experience instead of the specific artist. I was a part of a research team that looked at preferences of CMA fest goers. Now this isn't Roo, but these fans were indifferent about the lineup, they went because they enjoyed the theme of their music scene, and wanted to be in an epicenter of people who also enjoyed their similar tastes. I can show you the data if you'd like. I think this may be similar to the brand Bonnaroo is successfully promoting. Overall, so far, this is the most wide spread positive response I've seen on my social media since I've been attending music fests, from music snobs to illiterates.
You guys. They didn't actually book the band Superjam. Stop.
What ever service puts descriptions of all the bands into the app accidentally used the bio for the band, rather than the event.
One would think Bonnaroo trademarked Superjam and will be sending those boys a C&D any minute.
...except the bio on the app is just different enough from their own bio that it certainly seems as if someone typed it in there and tossed in a few extra zingers.
I was just about to say that. It has not been pulled directly off of the website from what I can tell. Someone definitely sent in a separate bio that is similar enough that it's definitely the same band but different enough that a crawler didn't just pick it off of a website.
I think its clear how badly they were undercut by shaky knees/beats. If you could take 5 or so acts from both, plus a couple decent reunion acts, we'd be in business.
Bonnaroo has abandoned the idea of a curated lineup, instead booking straight down the middle, the same pop-indie, bro-EDM you can find at any other (smaller/less expensive) festival. Its dismal, and anyone satisfied with this line-up is part of the problem. I have to assume these are first or second timers who don't see that much live music to begin with.
I'm satisfied with it and I've gone every year since 2012. Try again.

I keep looking for the actual text that was in the app, and I can't find it on the site. It certainly has the same tone, and lists some of the same bands they cover/take inspiration from. But none of the actual text as if it's a copy/paste.
And fuck their website designer. Who puts thin black text on that background? I have to highlight the text just to read it.

Either way we are getting a real Superjam instead of this shit pile

This is amazing. Your friends tend to be people with similar tastes and interests as you. Mind blown.
But who cares about the lineup? It's only the THEME that matters.

That is an unfortunate observation. It makes me think the band Superjam is actually happening.
insane undercard grabs like vulfpeck and Shamir and Judah
lol what.
I have had people mention on my social media looking to go just for Shamir (lgbt friends), Judah (local Nashville band big with Christian scene) and vulfpeck (never been here and highly regarded by older people in my music school)

Quit fucking with people. They have different versions of the same press sheet. One is on their website. A slightly different one goes out to prospective wedding clients. Yet another, saucier, one goes out to bars and night club promoters.

Like I said man, I can show you the survey data if you'd like.
Plus not just my Facebook. General searches on Twitter, instagram, reddit, and Facebook groups as well.

For some reason it rubs me the wrong way that you specify that your lgbt friends are the ones who like Shamir. As a straight white male who likes him, seems like that was an unnecessary specification.

Vulfpeck, the band best known for encouraging their fans to play an entire album of silence on Spotify to game some streaming money, is HIGHLY REGARDED.
They're fine, by the way, but they're a non-factor in deciding whether to plunk down the money for this fest.

It's not a photoshop. I copied it and posted the text in the headliner thread when the leak first happened.
I believe you, but I just have a hard time believing what was posted in the app to true. Besides, we never have that much info about the Superjam this early, we've been getting that info around may last couple years.
I have had people mention on my social media looking to go just for Shamir (lgbt friends), Judah (local Nashville band big with Christian scene) and vulfpeck (never been here and highly regarded by older people in my music school)
Shamir is great - I've seen him live and it is a super fun show...but it isn't like he's a rare get. Or expensive. He just came into the music scene this past year
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

So, as a potential Bonnaroo noob I have no past data to go on - aside from seeing lineups. But, this group of headliners gets me more excited than most (though I, admittedly, have schizophrenic taste in music) and I see another 10 or so artists that I am excited about without any research. So at $50 a headliner and $15 for the other 10 and I feel like I am getting my tickets worth. I am also a frequent camper so the other expenses aren't a ton/is money I would spend anyways on camping elsewhere. Finally, I am only coming from Pittsburgh, and the show quality around here has been pretty suspect as of late (again, IMHO).
On the other hand, I can totally see where some other folks are coming from. A little more in the 4-10 slots would go a long way to calming almost everyone here (as unlikely as it may be). The overspending on the headliners - while a guess - seems a reasonable one (Id be willing to bet Dead & Co. was an expensive, but in my opinion, worthwhile get). Ive seen some people suggest "pooling" some of the undercard spending for higher quality mid-card acts - and while I don't think that is unreasonable (as a bonnaroo noob my opinion is suspect at best haha) I imagine some of the vets would be pissed because the number of artists is shrinking significantly for the third year.

thank you for the response. the reasons you gave regarding the appeal of the acts to a younger demo makes sense. I also understand some attendees coming for the theme, or what we might call scene, instead of just particular acts, even if that is not my motivation for attending a festival.
when bonnaroo first started I was a jamband kid, and while my primary motivation for attending was the acts playing, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also attracted to the theme/scene, being this was a big jamband festival, this was our thing, these are my people, this does matter, this is important, because 80,000 of us are here, that kind of thing.
anyway hope you and your friends have a blast at roo this year. have fun and take care of each other.

You going to school for music means as much as the fact that I went to school for Marketing. You also are probably friends with people that are "so stoked" or ready to get "lit af" for Floss, Adventure Club, Zeds Dead, and other shit big to 21 year olds (I'm 28 and love a lot of EDM). Roo will still be a great time, but throwing in your "musical background" in defense of the lineup is laughable and insinuating that your taste is better/more important. By the way, good luck paying off those student loans with a music degree.
