Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
anyone satisfied with this line-up is part of the problem. I have to assume these are first or second timers who don't see that much live music to begin with.
uh, so? i'm one of these people, and i'm not taking it personally, but what's wrong with that? that seems like a shitty attitude to have.
i mean i totally get that this lineup is disappointing for a lot, but that condescending "my music taste is superior to theirs" thinking rubs me the wrong way.
Do you think Bonnaroo may try earlier dates in the future so that they can try to get these artists before they head to Europe in June?
I wouldn't know. Maybe in a few years once they are done building the farm up and getting new revenue from renting it out; they'll start increasing the talent budget though? It's not so much that acts would rather play shows in Europe than play Bonnaroo. It's that they can make more money doing so.
I was making this same point in my last two posts and I think people didnt want to hear it. The scary thing is that the other two bigger Livenation fests don't have this issue - Lolla and ACL have some local fest competition (which they can coexist with) but no overseas competition.
I think its clear how badly they were undercut by shaky knees/beats. If you could take 5 or so acts from both, plus a couple decent reunion acts, we'd be in business.
Bonnaroo has abandoned the idea of a curated lineup, instead booking straight down the middle, the same pop-indie, bro-EDM you can find at any other (smaller/less expensive) festival. Its dismal, and anyone satisfied with this line-up is part of the problem. I have to assume these are first or second timers who don't see that much live music to begin with.
Once the Brotient gets too high it's hard to turn back. I get the impression that the bro market is huge and Firefly has already been catering to this for a couple of years and it looks like Hangout and Bonnaroo are going that way too. I think our political candidates should be debating what to do about this bro epidemic.

Eh, I don't really buy this. The Euro circuit isn't new, and Bonnaroo managed perfectly well in the past. Hell, we found out about Paul McCartney playing Roo because one of the Euro fest organizers was complaining Paul chose Bonnaroo over him. As for Shaky Knees/Beats, how on earth are they getting out-muscled by a new regional festival a fraction of Bonnaroo's size?
It seems more like a deliberate choice rather than all the other fests eating Bonnaroo's lunch. Although both scenarios are pretty embarrassing.
I suspect its the increased competition on both ends. GovBall the week before, and Firefly the week after? Shaky beats in May? All in big cities? They just have no special leverage anymore sadly.

Good points. It is pretty sad that one of the major fests is getting absolutely hammered by these smaller fests this year. Although unless they see a decline in attendance, and more importantly profits, they have no reason to get into a bidding war for anyone.
Or maybe they just over spent on headliners this year.
Well, first of all, I doubt that whoever did the write up is going to dictate the setlist.
Secondly, her touring band for the solo material was the Nocturnals minus guitarist Scott Tournet.
Finally, this is about a Superjam. To suggest that she can only perform well with an exact set of musicians is silly. These is plenty of video of her performing with other artists to support that she can hold her own.
Yeah my issue is more with the solo material itself, but, having seen her, Scott Tournet is sorely missed. He and Benny Yurco, and he and Grace both had a ton of chemistry. But yeah, she would kill it in a superjam setting and I'd gladly see her there. Love artists who mix covers into their normals sets, and she's done great ones every time I've seen her.

I dig the lineup so far. This is a lame opinion that is inaccurate and offensive.
Someone I couldn't give a fuck about, based on the hell-scape description they had on the app.
I won't believe that description until Bonnaroo confirms it themselves. It seemed too bizarre/over-the-top to be real. Also, Bonnaroo has never had that kind of info available this early. At most we get key members/basic theme (Soul Superjam or Bluegrass Superjam). I'm convinced that's a Photoshop.
It's not a photoshop. I copied it and posted the text in the headliner thread when the leak first happened.

You should know by now to not come here for agreeable people. Anyone who holds an opinion like this has not listened to all the acts on the lineup. This is gonna be year 6 for me and it's probably my favorite undercard yet. Especially since we got some insane undercard grabs like vulfpeck and Shamir and Judah. And even if it was all bro EDM and indie pop or whatever, how can you completely shut someone down so hard if they are attracted to that music? Such pretentious answers that Bonnaroo should cater to their or what they think the expert music population would enjoy. Also the 3 headliners in no way cater to the party college crowd so that alone makes it that they weren't only thinking of that single demographic.

Paul Peck isn't involved this year, so it may be reflective of that.

Most of the people Ive encountered or met off of here have been pretty agreeable

I can pull it up on my app right now, every artist with descriptions. For some reason I never lost anything when the lineup got yanked.
Also Tame Impala doesn't have (Late Night) next to it on mine.
To make it a bit simpler: To a fest promoter, when it comes to headliners you break the bank. With undercard you just see who is touring around the time of your event.
From what I'm learning from my peers and in class, maybe it's time this model changes.
This is finally the year where all the friends I've petitioned to come with me are finally on board.
The worst part is, as entry-level concert goers, they're ecstatic.
And I'm over here like, "wait..."
I don't actually think it's that bad, though. Like others have said, 4-12 is just missing something. And can someone point out the "cool" EDM to me? Is it not there at all, or am I missing it? I'm speaking of acts like Caribou, Jamie xx, Four Tet, Panda Bear, etc.
However, any weekend where I can see LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, FJM, M83 is a great weekend to me.

It's all about who offers the most money. Headliners are a different animal than undercard. If Roo can shell out a ton of money to get LCD or Jay Z or Paul to hop back and forth across the pond they'd do it. They justify it because headliners are the main draw (I'm sure I'll get bombarded by the headliners aren't everything crowd here. But it is a big deal. Coachella is paying Axl a million more than he's worth just to headline their fest).
Paying a smaller scale act to do the same would just be burning money. Why pay an act like Floating Points more than they are worth when you can just grab some other less interesting club act at a fraction of the price?
Yet they still went out and got Bjork, Nick Cave, and Frank Ocean, all of which were presumably paid "more than they were worth" based on the crowd they drew. Just grabbing whoever was touring used to be Firefly's thing.

Hermitude is pretty good. Future/chill trap, old stuff is very chill-hop.

no, there aren't any really interesting electronic acts in that vein imo. i'm excited for rl grime, zeds dead, the floozies, etc, but i recognize that they aren't anything special and lack any punch.
*edit: i think hermitude, the knocks, and cashmere cat are decent grabs that aren't super well known. there was potential for so much more tho.

Good. And I'll choose to take my money elsewhere.
See, had they booked an interesting undercard, that is likely no more expensive than the undercard that they did book (for instance, had they booked Robyn over Halsey they probably would save some money and get a more interesting act), they may have gotten mine and several of my friend's money. Instead, I convinced my friends to go elsewhere (not sure where yet).
And like you said, if headliners are all the majority of festival goers care about, then really by getting rid of some of the dredge on the undercard they could appeal to people like me AND not lose any of the masses they are trying to bring in to the festival.

Exactly. Something seems to have drastically changed between now and 2014 with regard to booking fairly big and unique undercard acts. Heck, even last year they had D'Angelo, Slayer, and Belle & Sebastian, all of which are pretty rare on the festival circuit.

We're not really missing much in the 4-12 as far as the level of the acts(maybe 1 or 2 names). What were missing is quality acts to fill those. J Cole, Elle Goulding, Tame Impala, Macklemore, DCFC, M83 and Ween I think are legit top 12 acts, they just don't fit the taste of most of us here.
Edit:
Not saying all those names are weak IMO. Just that they fit billing wise

I'm pretty sure Tame Impala and M83 need to be left off of your list there. Most of us are stoked for those two lol
2017: 2/24 Twenty One Pilots 4/1 Radiohead 6/7 Glass Animals 9/10 Modest Mouse 9/21 Arcade Fire 9/29 Kings of Leon 10/3 Foster the People 10/17 The xx 10/22 LCD Soundsystem 11/8 Bon Iver

Cashmere Cat, Hermitude, The Knocks, The Floozies. Check em out. I agree we are probably missing a couple top acts but not many.

I wasn't saying we were upset with all them. I was just listing the names that are big enough to be in the top 10-12 of a major festival.
Personally I'm looking forward to Tame Impala, M83 and DCFC of I end up going.

In 2014 AC had the highest possible interest in the best possible product. In 2015 he cashed in his chips. That's a reductive way of putting it, but chips were cashed.

It must have been mentioned already, that "the Super Jam"'s description is eerily similar to the "About Us" section of a band called SuperJam. So I wouldn't doubt that Bonnaroo booked this cheap cover band called "SuperJam" in an attempt to be funny.

I've seen this posted a few times, that people who are not music snobs/nerds are pretty excited about this lineup. If you don't mind me asking, what specific acts are your friends seeing on this lineup that are making them excited? I'm a 34 year old music snob and am wondering if I just don't understand what music most people like anymore.
