Take a look at their Interference boards (U2 fan community) and people in the know are saying 2018 for the North American leg of the tour and the international portion will launch in July/Aug. It makes sense for them to play a high profile show before heading off internationally if they plan on putting the album out in the spring.
A high profile show...surely you don't mean Bonnaroo?
They had a bad year. It is still a widely known brand.
I feel like I bang this drum every year. Is much rather that they release an artist or two ever day or so. Keep the attention on the festival. It also helps to give each addition a bit of a spotlight.
Also, no BLAM!
Voodoo Experience tried to do something like this, to a massive failure in 2011. Maybe if they were more constant or if the names they did drop were even slightly known it might not have been so bad. They do sell a shit-ton of presale tickets due to the fact that they are only $99, but the one-by-one "daily" release was the worst. They didn't drop names everyday, they only did bottom line booked acts during the tedious release.
I mean it kept them in the spotlight, but it was not necessarily a good spotlight.
I can see that. I think that the idea of doing it in small chunks makes sense if they were to pursue this approach. Maybe start with a redacted line up poster and reveal a few every few days. Tickets available via presale, then a batch midway through the release and then after everything is out.
I don't know, I think that it would be a fun idea. I don't think that they'll try it but I think I'd enjoy it.
ME AND RAY have not spoken about Kinks showS at all- although weRE TRYING TO WORK TOGETHER ON OTHER STUFF and have worked on music together . In the meantime we both have albums finished. My album Open Road I did with my son Russ comes out in 2017! - Dave
Zero chance this is U2's only NA show. I'd even go further and say zero chance that it's their only NA festival.

This kick off show at Roo would most certainly be a "stripped down" version of their show though right? There is no way Roo has the infrastructure to put up that massive stage structure and rigging I dont think. THEN embark on this big tour? Not saying it's what is happening but just seems kind of a crazy idea for them to do that but it appears it's the way they will do things.
I think Bonnaroo only falls behind Coachella, Lolla, and ACL as far as popularity.
Right. Hence my questioning the idea that one of the most globally popular bands on the planet would want to do a one-off North American show at the fourth-most popular U.S. festival. It would be an exceedingly odd choice for them to play only Bonnaroo, then leave the continent for 12 months.
To help boost the profile of LiveNation's second biggest event in the country? (it is considered bigger than ACL to them; just based on the fact that they actually own the location and therefore make more of a profit)

i'm guessing it'll be some sort of big screen setup but nowhere near as elaborate as their arena show. i think you will be correct

I think it would be fun if they kept us constantly updated on how the booking was going. Like if they flat out told us months ahead of time "hey couldn't get Radiohead sorry" or "we were thinking about getting Justice to play late night, but we're going to go with Steve Aoki instead". It would be terrible business but good for me.

Want to place a bet? Let's get @gearbm in on this too.
Haha sure, what's the bet? That U2 don't perform any other American festivals in the coming year? $20 sound good?

If Bonnaroo is U2's only NA show for the year (which is what that turkey was proposing), then I'll delete my account and leave forever. If that doesn't turn out to be true, you need to do the same, plus you need to go back to that place in Philly where you threw a hissyfit about the water and let the bouncer punch you in the face.
I wouldn't make that bet for only NA show of the year. Festival is another story.
Looks like this could possibly be U2's only North American show of 2017, rumors came out today about shows in Asia/Pacific area in late summer. Wouldn't be surprised if they start off their tour internationally before hitting the US, opposite of what they did last tour.

"Called Eric Clapton last week, but he still hasn't returned any of our messages. Kind of a dick actually. Bout to shoot Daft Punk the yearly email."
He said zero chance they don't do any other festival. Guess he didn't really mean that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Probably not in my best interest to make a bet about festivals with you, seeing as how your pals at Founders have certainly already let you know whether or not U2 is slated to perform at any more of their corporate overlords' gatherings.
You were the one who wanted to make a bet. Zero Percent chance you said.

obviously the fact that you wanted to bet about that so badly introduced new information.

It could be worse (as it has been) but I guess these 3 aren't to bad. I was really really hoping for Muse though, especially when they said they would be playing some US festivals next year. I can't believe Roo still has not gotten them.

So, in recap - I ask why on earth a band the size of U2 would do a one-off show at Bonnaroo as their only NA show of the year, and you said "well, LiveNation might want it that way." Then came the bet talk.
I could care less if it's their only NA show in 2017, but the people on the Interference boards are saying Asia/Pacific in summer and Europe in the fall with NA being the final leg in winter 2018. This doesn't seem all that far fetched. Looking back at their last 2 tours, when they hit the road it's usually for 8-12 months at a time. It looks like on their last tour they only played Europe and NA, so it makes sense for them to start in Asia/Pacific region. They haven't played Japan since 2006 and rumors popped today saying they're planning on visiting Singapore for the first time.
I think this all depends on when the new album is released. I could easily see them playing the season finale of SNL in late May and then doing other promo until the record drops and then finish it up at Roo and get ready for the official tour.
