the bad: Govs Ball Okeechobee Firefly Boston Calling Shaky Beats
the ugly: Hangout
lol wut
Govs Ball didn't get anything special. The Strokes and The Killers as headliners? BOOOO! Their other lines are whoring it out everywhere and there's only a names I actually give a shit about and have already seen. Roo got Pearl Jam, Dead & Co, LCD, Tame Impala, Ween, and Claypool. I really LOVE all of those enough to ignore the rest of the garbage on there. There's garbage on the Roo lineup every year. Honestly every lineup this year sucks and is filled with garbage, I was just trying to rank based on gets/garbage ratio. Literally the only one that is pure awesome is Levitation.

Once a wook, always a wook?
I thought you were better than this, 'Ginus.
I've never been a wook. I'm a weird metal dude that also really loves psych music. My favorite live bands are Primus, Melvins, Ween, and Skinny Puppy.
edit: I would also like to add that I'm not going to any music festivals this year aside from a day pass or 2 to jazzfest and possibly Voodoo fest because they're close and always have something worth going for. Would love to return the Levitation, but it's just not doable this year.
Bonnaroo lineup is actually okay for my tastes, but that second line of J. Cole, Ellie Goulding and Macklemore is pretty boner-deflating.
Macklemore is so fucking weak. I watched him at Roo '13 just bc I could sit down in a chair in VIP and relax before Swans. Man, I couldn't believe how annoying that guys is.

That's the tricky thing. There are a couple smaller festivals I wanted to include in my rankings (such as Nelsonville) but they would have come in under the 'disappointing' heading when they don't charge half as much or make a pretense to be a big festival. In the end that is why I didn't include Moogfest or Big Ears in mine either.
The problem is that there are too many people who just settle for this shit. Like sure, I could probably scrape together 5-10 acts and try and make a weekend out of it, but I'd prefer to hold onto my money. After conflicts my list would probably be knocked down to half and I'm not willing to drop 1000 bucks on a few acts I could see locally.
I don't disagree all that much, though I would say there are more than 5-10 quality acts at Bonnaroo. But what can you do? If you enjoy festivals, you either have to take what you get or seek out niche ones that suit a preference (e.g. Fun Fun Fun, Riot Fest or Waka for me). Many of us probably see on the order of 200 or so live performances every year. And admittedly that makes it hard to get excited for inevitable repeats unless there are really eclectic headliners somewhere. I think with the saturation levels, there really isn't that much of a choice but to settle. You don't have to settle obviously. For instance, Hangout isn't really doing it for me outside of a couple of acts I like and a couple new ones I'd want to see. I have a ticket. I'm probably not going. That's the only other solution outside of a large scale email or letter writing campaign that probably falls on deaf corporate ears anyway. We can bitch about it I guess, but that really isn't likely to do much.

Or you could just not give them your money, which is my plan.
That's the thing though, one doesn't HAVE to attend Bonnaroo. There are plenty of other lineups out there - with much smaller budgets even - who have managed to put together superior fests this year.
Part of my frustration is that Bonnaroo is in a position to host one of the better lineups every year but for some reason it's just not happening.
Doesn't really matter anyways because I'm going to Europe this Summer where all the cool shit is.

That's a big part of my frustration with the lineup. I feel like Bonnaroo could and should be doing better but I'm starting to think I'm just getting older and they are going after a younger demographic. Maybe one that doesn't care as much about super long sets or musicians who have perfected their craft. It seems like it's a lot more casual music fans they're going after and maybe it's working for them but I'm seeing more of a trend towards acts and genres I don't really care for at all. They still keep a few things for people like me (Bluegrass tent, jam band or two, a couple of solid rock/americana acts) but overall there's a lot less that makes me interested. It feels like they've really gone away from offering a multitude of genres and have kind of filtered it down to a few that they are sticking with.
Yeah, that should be a great trip. One day when I retire, I'll probably embrace hippiedom and hit a bunch of those summer rock and metal festivals up in Northern Europe. There's an opportunity to see some stuff that never gets over here in different environments.
Again, I don't disagree with you. In my case, Hangout is the bear in 2016. They got my money on alumni presale which I'll either get back or just give the ticket to my daughter if she ends up wanting to go. I'm also not sure what's up with Bonnaroo. I realize I'm biased because I went, but 2012 to me is more the gold standard than what they've been churning out. Maybe it's the partnership with Live Nation? Maybe it's just because they are trying to appeal to too many different demographics? Maybe they don't care because corporate sponsorship trumps everything and many of those sponsors are jacking up the festival profits? To me, Bonnaroo almost feels like a Voodoo lineup this year. It's pretty top heavy, and I personally love the headliners. But I'm missing a lot of subheadliners and mid-card/late night acts.

I have only been attending Chicago and Louisville, for fests in the last few yrs. for this reason. Attend 2-3, spend the same amount of money as a big one, eat better for the same amt of money, sleep, etc., and mainly, see whom I want to see.
Ex: Forecastle for a while, for a few main factors. The lineups by day are usually solid, great area for things to do - places to eat, CHEAP to attend. Also, bikes
North Coast, 3 out of 6. Was smart and did not attend yrs 3,4,5. Other yrs - they nailed my tastes, and the cost of tix compared to. Easily. Hell, last yr, the only reason I went - I snagged an early bird for $100, which alone justified D'Angelo and Chem Bros. The crowd was much more diverse on age last yr. Reflected the lineup a lot better than the previous few yrs. Also, it's easy to eat very well in Chicago for cheap. I stay w a friend, so I am fortunate w regards to saving for boarding.
This being said, it looks as of right now that I will be spending 2 weekends of July in Chicago. Though, I hope to see LCD in a venue, before a fest. That would cancel that second trip.

I'm not including international fests in my ranking but Primavera in Spain looks pretty sweet. It's the weekend before Bonnaroo so not surprisingly not much crossover but may be part of reason Bonnaroo has a hard time with good 'gets' recently. Some of the artists that excite me most over there like Sigur Ros, Air and PJ Harvey are ones that don't come stateside very often but others like Radiohead, Brian Wilson & Animal Collective would have been excellent bookings if the would have been available.
