Motion to change name of Roo 16 to "Vibe Fest 2K16".
Anyway, I like Jazz Fest best but the nature of how spread out everything is (very limited top acts every day) makes it lose some of the kick. Overall rank (Top 5):
Bonnaroo '15/'16/'17/'18/'19 - ACL '13/'14/'15/'17/'18 - Fun Fun Fun '14 - SXSW '13/'14/'15 - FPSF '16
2019 Shows: 4/30 - Vampire Weekend 6/28 - Father John Misty & Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 9/6 - Cardi B w/ Teyana Taylor 9/28 - Vulfpeck w/ The Fearless Flyers
I'm not including international fests in my ranking but Primavera in Spain looks pretty sweet. It's the weekend before Bonnaroo so not surprisingly not much crossover but may be part of reason Bonnaroo has a hard time with good 'gets' recently. Some of the artists that excite me most over there like Sigur Ros, Air and PJ Harvey are ones that don't come stateside very often but others like Radiohead, Brian Wilson & Animal Collective would have been excellent bookings if the would have been available.
Except Primavera started the year before Roo and has been consistently putting out good lineups. Really Roo's just not trying hard enough, or has lost a lot of its cultural caché. I'd guess mostly the former, with a sprinkling of the latter

Never made sense to me to include Jazzfest since its two weekends. Still a great fest, but if Bonnaroo or Coachella had twice as many bands, it wouldn't even be close.

NOS Alive fest in Portugal is having 10th anniversary this year and aren't screwing around about it. I thought they were doing well off the bat with Radiohead headlining but now they've announced Arcade Fire and Robert Plant too. That's with Chemical Brothers, Tame Impala, Pixies, M83, Hot Chip, Father John Misty, Courtney Barnett and several others for around $150 for 3-days. Those are probably most of the big pieces but still a lot more lineup yet to come. Holy hell!

This. I come to Roo from the West Coast so with the cheap flights these days over to Europe, it might not end up costing a ton more. This is how you do an anniversary year.
Bonnaroo is not trying to be Primavera. Its kind of unrealistic to compare the two.
Wondering why you think this? They are both internationally renowned fests that compete every year for talent. Other than it being in Barcelona, which you can say for every festival, why can't you compare?

Oh yeah, and Primavera puts it to shame, as it has for years now. I would think their budgets are at least similar, if not Roo being larger, and they have consistently put out better lineups every year. That's my point, it's Roo's allocation of money these days is out of whack, comparatively that is.
The initial Lock'n lineup is strong in my opinion.
It's a little far, and I'm already jammed up for Memorial Day, but Round 2 of Summer Camp was one of the best round 2 of adds this year including
Mudcrutch Big Grizmatik Roots Excision PFunk Lotus Fishbone Slow Magic and others.
I like the overall lineup better than any major festival including all of them. It's not for everyone, and I understand the hippie hate a little. But musically it's up there with the Moogs and Big Ears talent with younger (mostly) artists.
3 moe. 3 Umphrey's Mudcrutch Lotus STS9 Excision The Roots PFunk Thievery Keller Exmag Dopapod Michael Menert & Pretty Fantastics New Mastersounds Protohype Zoogma Earphunk Tauk John Brown's Body Lettuce
I agree with most of these assessments. Don't follow all the festivals very close but Jazzfest > Bonnaroo > Hangout for sure. And that is pretty much just based on lineup today.
New #1 & #2 lineups: Glastonbury & FYF Fest! Although I normally only include North American fests I make the exception for Glastonbury. However this year it is not my overall favorite which is very unusual. That honor goes to Rock Werchter and I also personally prefer Bilbao over it this time as well. Primavera and NOS Alive give them a run for the money as well but think I would still keep Glastonbury as my #3. FYF gets my #5 ranking overall when including the rest of the world.

I'd totally flip your disappointing list. Bunbury is pretty terrible after the top 10, its probably the most disappointing to me personally. Forecastle is literally Sloss with 25 more bands but not Ray Lamontagne or Flaming Lips. (I actually think the names from 10-30 in Forecastle are pretty great) So I'd rate it good enough. and Firefly is probably "good enough" based on their names from 6-20.
I'd actually say Pitchfork and Hangout should both go in the disappointing category. Their line-ups in recent years were infinitely better than their 2016 editions.

I still feel like I would prefer Primavera to Glastonbury. That may just be because I'm not a fan of Coldplay or Muse. I'd need to compare the two again to be certain. Undercards are always more important to me and both are deep.
1. Panorama (Best Headliners & 2-3rd tier) 2. Coachella (Stacked) 3. Lollapalooza 4. Eaux Claires (much better than Boston Calling) 5. 25. Bonnaroo (late night is awful, 2 days totally missable, but there are toilets) *Excluding Foreign Festivals
When comparing lineups I'm not giving consideration to relative cost/size of these fests, just directly comparing lineups. If I were to take those other factors into consideration the rankings would appear wildly varied to how I've got them now. I agree that this year's lineup for Bonnaroo is quite weak which is why it is the first year I will be missing in a decade but the 'good enough' isn't really giving these fests all that much credit. It's only saying I'd consider going to them. If a smaller festival pulled this lineup it would look pretty good or if Bonnaroo hadn't gotten so expensive I'd also probably be trying to talk myself into it. Things being what they are though I'll just as soon pass it up.
Way to go Roskilde! That is the right way to do artist additions. Neil Young, Grimes, James Blake, M83, Slayer, Santigold plus a bunch more added to an already impressive lineup that included Tame Impala, PJ Harvey, Courtney Barnett, New Order, LCD Soundsystem, Damon Albarn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, At the Drive In and many more. Moves it up to #1 on my international list.
