Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Opinions will differ but Bonnaroo is still recognised as a top tier festival by the media who covers it. I asked 5 photographers who cover or have covered it regularly and they all agreed it's still a top tier festival. One bad year of a lineup will not change that. Several years in a row may but not just one year.

Ok yeah I should have prefaced, I limited first tier to only 10 festivals. I agree on jazz, outside, and acl's size. But firely? and do you think hangout should be demoted? I still think it has more recognition than the ones you listed, which is what I made the tiers on.
Firefly sold upwards of 80,000 tickets in 2014 and 2015. Hangout sells about 40,000 tickets each year. And I disagree that it has more name recognition. Maybe on Inforoo because that dumpster fire of a thread is 400 pages long, but not in the real world.
I'm sure hangout could sell more if it weren't for the city cap.
And totally agree firefly belongs on tier 2. Boss your life up firefly.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider Firefly tier 1 either because they never put out a tier 1 lineup. I just think it was odd to have Hangout in the tier 1 list when much larger festivals were in the tier 2 list.

Last year's lineup was worse than this year's so we are within a trend

Nah. The top 3 was much worse, but the undercard was at least respectable (still not very good). This year has a great top 3 and a train wreck of an undercard.

Except all the good things on the undercard played at the same time Saturday night so you might as well have crossed most of them off. The headliners are way way way better this year. Subheadliners were better last year. rest of the lineup this year is way better.

How so? Last year's undercard was actually pretty deep from the middle down. This year's undercard is only solid at the bottom, with a few gems sprinkled throughout.
That being said, I think we're both in agreement that 2015 and 2016 were pretty big drop-offs from 2013 and 2014.

Probably just personal taste once you get in the bottom 2/3rds

Paul McCartney, RHCP, Petty, Outkast, the Killers, KoL, Jack Johnson have all headlined. Yes, their undercards are unimaginative, but any fest that pulls down these acts and sells 80,000 tickets is huge. It is the biggest festival on the East Coast for heaven sakes.
Plus putting festivals on tiers is like pissing up a rope. Don't try, you just get peed on.

It's not just about the crowd size, dingus. Booking one good headliner and then an assortment of the standard flotsam and jetsam drifting through the filthy canal of festival lineups doesn't really mean a thing, even if 80,000 bored-ass East Coast high school dickheads decide they need to experience that Festival Life.
So outside of Jazzfest and maybe Coachella- no body had a first tier festival this year? It is ridiculous argument anyway. Putting festivals on a tier is stupid because where are lines drawn. And I don't want to try and figure it out. But to say 80,000 and booking the arguably biggest act in music is not top of the crop, I'm not sure what is. Not matter how shitty the rest is, that accounts for tangible success. Every festival would kill for 80,000 paid attendance.

McDonald's sells more burgers than In N Out so clearly it's the better burger chain.
Some people prefer the taste of processed chicken, pork, beef and various by-products smooshed together rather than real beef.
Plus it's not the food that makes McDonalds great, it's the customers that bring the good vibes. McDonalds and the people it attracts will always be tier one in my heart, regardless of how many Big Macs they sell this year.

Depends on how you define top tier. I'm going to define it by popularity. A combination of ticket sales, public perception, and media coverage. For me I now think Bonnaroo is a 2nd tier festival. IMO from about 2006-2014 there was what I called and others called the Big 3. Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapolooza. Coachella in a big way has ran away from every other festival and is in a tier by itself. Coachella is tier 1 and every other festival falls in behind where they may. Bonnaroo for me is in that second tier and equal to ACL, Lollapolooza, SXSW, and Govs Ball.
I also seeing Bonnaroo falling into the 3rd tier fairly soon if some changes are not made. There are just so many options for festivals now and that makes the once thought of cool location of Bonnaroo out in the middle of nowhere just a inconvience in a lot of people's eyes. But Bonnaroo has some good things going for it that other festivals simply can provide. Mainly late night sets, superjams, and it's 4 nights. They just have to start taking advantage of having those things better.
Next year is the most important year for Bonnaroo and I think they will come through with something special. They know they shit the the bed this year and have lost something they once had. Why else would they send out a survey to previous attendees who are not attending this year wondering why they're not going? At least they recognize it. They can climb to the top of tier 2 and the 2nd biggest festival in the US, but if they slip up next year they will be nothing other than another firefly, Sasquatch, shakey knees, etc IMO. Or at least on that trajectory

I just heard there were over 100 arrests yesterday. Is that true? Is it usually like that? I've never been around or seen anything like that.
It was over 100 citations, not arrests, but there are multiple posts about security being more invasive then years past.
Security is different from Cops. There has been a ever increasing police presence going on in the campgrounds looking for illegal practices. Security at the tolls are looking for weapons and glass, security at the centeroo entrance is looking for banned items and substances, cops are looking to ruin vibes and make money doing it.

Yeah just mistyped, I definitely meant cops. Security is just a bunch of random people in polos who either take their job too seriously or couldn't give two shits with nearly zero power anyways.
