The only thing I can complain about is the lack of bathrooms. The constant lineups were a total pain when you're just trying to dart in for a pee before a set or something. But I guess with attendance down, they cut back on some amenities.

The fest was empty. If you thought the left side of What Stage was golden in years past, you should have seen it this year. Macklemore kept saying the crowd was 40,000 large. I assume thats what they told him the attendance was.

Was just talking about this! The new bathrooms were nice. Only took a day for the guys to make two lines. One line for Number 1 and one line for number 2. The problem was when they removed portos for the infrastructure they didn't move them to another place they just removed them! I camped in Groop and had the lucky/not lucky spot of having portos a row of cars behind us. Trip to the pisser was no more than a minute walk. Tried out the flushable a in Groop. Pretty nice to use. Still hot as all fucking get out in them though.

I agree with this. The lines for the portos where always so long just to take a piss. Never had to wait that long to pee for the permanent restrooms though.
I have to say that Bonnaroo didn't take a black eye based off the sets I watched. I felt like it would have been worth it going in, and it looks like they ended up delivering. The whole lineup might not have been ideal, but it was still the big time.

I don't think anyone is saying that the acts that played weren't going to play well. I think its just more so the overall blah feeling of the line up. Most of these acts have been festival whores for the past few years, so there is no reason to pay the new shiny $400+ ticket price, plus travel and equipment cost, and time commitment that Roo is.
I know what you're saying and appreciate the point of view. For background, I'd say that Bonnaroo isn't even anywhere near my favorite festival. I just went in to the weekend feeling it was most likely worth it and came out of the weekend feeling like they validated my opinion - to me. I can similarly understand that not everyone would probably agree with that. I didn't like some of the upper card, but I also realize that's gonna happen. I'm also resigned to know I'm not getting King Crimson, Dave Brock's Hawkwind and a Brand X reunion anywhere. So if Macklemore is 4 or 5 at Roo (or whatever he was) or Weeknd is 3 at Voodoo or Christina Agulera or one of the Jonas Brothers is up there on the Jazz Fest lineup, I'm not going see that shit anyway. So I guess with the solid LCD set, no doubt a great PJ set, 3+ hours of a Dead set, Papadosio, J Cole, Lamb of God, etc., I would have got my money's worth. As it was, I only had to spend 26.95 plus tax on a handle of Beam, so it was an excellent value for me this year

The reduced amount of bathrooms was ridiculous and annoying. I get that there are less people, but there are always lines to the bathrooms and they cut more than half of what they had last year. I personally didn't try the new permanent bathrooms but heard they were quite nice.
Need more info about the bathrooms. Seemed to be the most exciting part.
What would you like to know?
The new bathrooms definitely helped make the Portos in Centroo more bearable. On the flip side, it felt like Roo had fewer Porto locations inside centroo and in GA which caused the GA ones to fill up fast on the first day, they seemed to get it under control after that. Important note for guys, if you see a line for the bathroom, thats the line for #2. #1's could walk in and out with no wait. I also loved having the water fill up stations right outside the bathrooms.
Bathrooms were where me and a couple friends hid out during the evacuation. Best decision ever. When they opened back up, we were the 3% of Roo inside Centeroo and had our pick of front row/pit for any of the post evacuation shows.

In a huge role reversal I saw lines at the new restrooms for the fellas all weekend but not for the ladies...who ever did the stats crunch when deciding how many stools the fellas needed had a bad day. Instead of urinals on both sides of the center wall they needed 2 rows of stools and one wall of urinals.
There was never a wait to take a standup at the new ones that I saw. But so many times people see a line and think that is just where they need to be. I would holler at the folks lined up when I went to piss that if you are waiting to take a slash you don't need to be...and 3-4 gents at least every time brightened up and jumped outta the sit down line.

Yeah, I saw this as well. People just like to stand in lines.

You also coulda just chilled at the tents the shows were at ???? thankfully I refused to leave my rail spot for Claypool. They (security) really wanted us to leave but we all knew it was hoopla/wouldn't amount to anything.
Bonnaroo '15/'16/'17/'18/'19 - ACL '13/'14/'15/'17/'18 - Fun Fun Fun '14 - SXSW '13/'14/'15 - FPSF '16
2019 Shows: 4/30 - Vampire Weekend 6/28 - Father John Misty & Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit 9/6 - Cardi B w/ Teyana Taylor 9/28 - Vulfpeck w/ The Fearless Flyers
Roo-hack (at least based on this year for dudes): if you can stand handling your #2 business in a Porto, you should hit the Portos up for #2 and the flushable restrooms for #1 (in centeroo). The Porto lines were never that bad compared to the lines for the permanent restrooms and, like has been said, you can literally walk straight in to the permanent restrooms to handle your #1 business.

I love discussions like this. Ranking things and/or arranging things in tiers is a favorite pastime of mine.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the best way to determine what is a first tier festival is ticket sales. Last year the inforoo hive mind was convinced ticket sales would be way down and there would be plenty of space in centeroo. Nobody has hard ticket sales numbers but it certainly felt as crowded if not even more crowded than the previous two years.
So we'll just have to wait and see what this year feels like, but I'm willing to bet they'll sell a shitload of tickets and it will be super crowded, regardless of what we all think of the lineup. And as long as Roo sells a shitload of tickets they'll always be one of the "big four" American music festivals, even if the lineups that sell those tickets aren't to the taste of those who have attended and enjoyed bonnaroo in the past.
Hey look at how wrong I was.
Anyway I'll go ahead and predict again bonnaroo will sell a bunch of tickets this year.
Bonnaroo 2014 - Clearly a Tier 1 Fest Bonnaroo 2015 - Still Clear Tier 1, but showing signs of weakness Bonnaroo 2016 - Tier 1 Headliners, but undercard really starting to slip Bonnaroo 2017 - Solidly in Tier 2, without U2 borderline Tier 3
I wouldn't call it second tier. Second tier festivals don't book U2 to headline. Debatable I suppose but I think calling it second tier is a bit much
Is it a massive disappointment? 100%.
This was where I was last year. I said it couldn't be tier 2 because of the headliners it landed. But now it's the same case two years in a row. The overall lineup is tier 2 with big name headliners.
A music festival should also have good music. That's been lacking the last couple years.
I guess that sucks when music is all it has going for it.. but that's all subjective as well. What You eat don't make me shit you know.
Music isn't the only thing going for it. But it should be the main thing. But yes music is subjective. The dwindling diversity in music is the most concerning thing to me.

Is a real tier 1 fest capable of sucking? I think not. It's possible that Coachella is the only true Tier 1 fest left in the US. Lolla gets the big names, but for other reasons I think it's not at the same level of Coachella or International fests or Bonnaroo's of yesteryear.

I think they're just stuck in a rut now, trying to adapt to the changing music scene. But Roo '12 and '13 were the best festival experiences I have ever had, I really hope they eventually get back on track again.
