The EDM booking is 3rd tier level. Rest of the undercard is 2nd tier level and only a few in the 1st two lines are 1st tier level. So yeah, 2nd tier trending downward towards 3rd

I'd argue Tier 1 due to the U2 booking and the headliners from last year and this year, but there's no denying the undercard is nowhere near where it used to be. I have old 'roo posters up around my house, and look at some of the acts they used to book in the top third and middle of the posters. In 2010, they might have had Dave Matthews and KOL at the top, but further down you had acts like Phoenix, John Fogerty, LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corp, Jeff Beck, Daryl Hall and Chromeo, The Melvins, The National and They Might Be Giants. They've replaced a lot of those acts with more EDM and more pop'y stuff. I'm interested in seeing how the change in strategy impacts this year's attendance numbers. It definitely had an impact on last year's.

Firefly will be tier 1 in about 8 years when all the Day 1 GA kids become RV adults and they sit and reminisce on all the good times they had at 21 Pilots and White Panda.
I think if ticket sales are like they were last year, they have officially become a second tier festival, unfortunately. Just because we don't like the lineup doesn't mean that it won't move a shit-ton of tickets. If they get their 80k I will say still a first tier. But I think that they are definitely on the way to a second tier that just happened to have U2 this year. I miss being wow'ed by them and hope they get it back but I don't see it happening after the last couple years' lineups and the low attendance last year.

Tier 2 with Tier 1 headliners, barely.
I'm more excited to buy a ticket to Forecastle than I am to buy a ticket to Bonnaroo (which I won't).
U2 is a big name, but they're also practically a joke among 18-30 year olds. Even RHCP and the Weeknd are disappointing when the former is 10 years past any sort of cultural relevance and the latter played every other big festival before he finally said fine, fuck it, Bonnaroo hasn't given me a paycheck yet (same with Lorde).
Is Hangout tier 2? I think Hangout has a comparable line-up to Roo with about 4 or 5 acts you can point to as being better than anything on Roo's line-up.
Edit: I looked at Firefly 2016 since it was under discussion and gun to my head, I would rather go there than Bonnaroo 2017. Deadmau5, Disclosure, Blink-182, Tame Impala, M83, ASAP... I could go on. There's much more there for my personal taste than at Bonnaroo 2017.
tier 1 fests don't lose half their attendees in a year. after last year bonnaroo lost a lot of the cache it had built with years of 80k+. If you replaced U2 with tool, foo fighters, kings of leon, killers, or any of the other names floating around in the headliner thread this year, there'd be no doubt that bonnaroo was a tier 2 fest.
ACL should be doing better with lineups given the 2 week budget, but it's been kind of an eh rehash afterthought compared to Lolla now that Lolla has the 4th day $ to play with.

ACL had one of the best lineups in North America in 2013 and 2014, but their last two have been fairly pedestrian.
I really just think people on the internet have become bitchier over the years. Also, people on here would've hated the original Bonnaroo lineps that were basically just filled with jam bands. Times change. Now, you're just old complainers.
HAHAHA. i totally agree with this. yea the lineup isnt that good. but i think times are changing. its a new generation. most of these people on here are now old. and expecting a 1969 mustang fastback when in reality they are getting a 2017 nissan gtr. its just a different time now. stop acting like we are still living in 2003 when the lineups were jammy and cool. there are tons of younger people whot think this bonnaroo lineup is killer. times change. its the evolution of the music world. they cant please the same age group forever.

Lets use Made in America's exclusive headliners as a case study. Beyonce, Rihanna, Coldplay... but you wouldn't consider the editions they played at to fall under Tier I.

the problem with this analogy is this lineup isn't a 2017 nissan GTR. it's a toyota corolla. with U2 racing stripes.

You might be a second-tier fest if Martin Garrix sees the other names on the poster and bolts at the last minute because he realizes it might not be good for his career to be there.

The times changing excuse when every other festival is putting together a lineup that puts Bonnaroo to shame.
I'm 26--so at this point clearly out of Bonnaroo's intended age-range this year, but Coachella, Gov Ball, Panorama, Boston Calling, etc all look fucking fantastic to me.
From what I saw on Facebook, Bonnaroo is holding a contest for the fist groops to hit 50, 75, and 125 members and the prizes are access to the headliners pit....So does this mean the pit at the What stage is no longer first come first serve? If so, I'm not surprised. Money hungry LN would jump at the opportunity to charge a premieum to get access to that pit. Like, pay extra and get a ticket for that show in the pit...

The biggest problem with this analogy is that it's a massive pile of shit. The most common retort I keep hearing with respect to the lineup is "the music is great, people love Marshmello, you're just out of touch and don't like electronic music." That's a load of horseshit. There are plenty of people who absolutely love electronic music and completely respect and appreciate it as an art form who think this lineup is full of watered down, lowest common denominator garbage.
It's like if someone brings me a McDonald's burger on a platter, and I'm like "eh, no thanks." It's not that I don't like burgers (I fucking love burgers), it's that I don't really want to eat an oversalted slab of grease, fat and gristle. I'm aware that McDonald's sells millions of burgers, and that millions of people think their burgers are the fucking best and will shovel them in their faceholes until they can't breathe properly, but that doesn't change the fact that they're pretty gross. Telling me that the only reason I don't like Big Macs is because I fail to appreciate that times have changed and that this is what a fucking burger is now is reductive, simplistic, and so stupid that I almost can't process it.
Funny you bring up marshmello. With your multiple characters. Edm is a dying genre. It's so played out that all kinds of gimmicks are necessary to stay relevant. The burger thing again? Really? So what are you saying, you don't like this slab of grease but you like that slab of grease. Just wondering why you post so much on a board that is dedicated for roo, when you hate what roo has become?

You don't see the difference between mcdonalds and a higher quality burger?
I post on this board a lot and I've been coming here since 2007 because its a good place to talk about music. I also hate what Roo has become. He's not alone.
And EDM is not a dying genre. The Coachella undercard has about 3 dozen amazing electronic acts that I would love to see come within 2 hours of where I live but it never happens.

You might not like EDM, but surely you realize how foolish you sound, right?
It's like people saying in the 80's that rap/hip hop was a fad and would go away.
