I proposed the idea in the "What books are you reading?" thread and it got a decent amount of interest - so let's do it! The main question: what book do we want to read? I'd prefer we did something not gargantuan so that people maintain interest, and something well-known so that way we can steal discussion questions from the internet if need be. Perhaps something moderately contemporary? I'm thinking something along the lines of "Brave New World", "Water for Elephants", "The Kite Runner", etc. After selecting a book, we can do sign ups so that I can tag people when there's a discussion date coming up. We can keep this thread for sign-ups for each book and meta-discussion, and we can have new threads for each book that we do.
So:
What book do we want to read? How often do we want to have a discussion date? And by discussion date, I just mean that we'll start talking about events up through a certain page starting on a certain date - that sort of thing. How much do we want people to read in a given period of time? Maybe that can vary depending on the book? Any other ideas to make things more interesting? Maybe we can switch up discussion leaders if people want to do that, otherwise I have absolutely no problem running this. I'm a manager at a bookstore so this is totally up my alley. Or maybe we don't really need a discussion leader at all, but just someone to create the threads and post the discussion dates?
I'm open to all ideas that don't suck, so gimme whatcha got!

I'm in. We could have polls or something to vote on what books we do? I don't care really but I've been looking for some inspiration to start reading again!

same here. i haven't read in a looooooong time and have been meaning to for a while, and this could be that jump start of motivation. i also like the idea of getting a handful of book suggestions and putting it up in a poll to decide.
I've never been apart of a book club before, so I'll go ahead and third the idea of collecting book ideas and then polling it or voting in some way.
To answer your questions:
What book do we want to read? I never read a lot of classic novels when I was in my formative schooling (moved to a foreign country in high school/didn't give a shit about reading as a youth), so deciding from that vast well would work for me. How often do we want to have a discussion date? I imagine everyone's schedule varies significantly, so would an updated section of the book to refer to twice a week make sense? Or once a week, but with a larger section of the book to be read? How much do we want people to read in a given period of time? Maybe that can vary depending on the book? This should absolutely depend on the book. Some books' chapters/sections are <10 pages long, others are >40, fonts are varying, etc. I think it'll appear reasonable once the following book is chosen. Also, you're a manager at a bookstore, I think we'd all whole-heartedly welcome your direction on this one. Jaz, there are so many awesome nerds on this forum, I seriously doubt we have a lack of people willing to initiate discussions and sub-moderate threads based on the particular book.
Soul crushing is exactly the way I'd describe that one. It's like Schindler's List with less whimsy.
jesus. that sounds... rough. even more so than i imagined somehow.
It's certainly not a fun read.
That said, I'm probably our for the first round or two anyways so don't let my comments sway you. I'm still making my way through the books I got for Christmas.
