I'd like to think of my band as a real band that only does originals. If they have to be a cover band I'd pick differently.
No, the way I look at it is that the setlist would just act as a way to show you the kind of songs they would make. Like on Pandora, you choose one band and they give you a bunch of random bands that are similar. This would be like if you chose your band on pandora and you are listing the other songs it would play
I'd rather make something more original. It takes more imagination to try to come up with a band with an original sound. In real life you have bands that only do their own material and you have some that can be the world's best cover band at times. I like both of these types of bands. In this case I'd rather assemble the former. I think it should be optional. You can list a cover set list if you would like but it's not required.

I'm just saying it'd be like saying "my band is new wave/post-punk with some very mild synth-pop and experimental tendencies"
But, giving a list of similar artists/songs allows people to really imagine what your band would sound like. But I agree, it should be optional.
I admittedly don't listen to Primus, but I was scoping out Youtube looking for the bassist for my band and I like his sound the best and think it would fit well with what I'm envisioning for the sound of my band. I know he'll go sooner rather than later, so my first round pick is Les Claypool.
Damn this brain of mine lol. Had a post for singer/frontman all made up but just deleted because I believe this position might be harder to fill. For my guitarist (also sings, songwriter) I pick Mark Knopfler. Not only is he among the highest skilled, he can play anything with anyone.

His overall versatility plus the fact that I would be way more pissed if he was swiped before my second pick were the tiebreakers. As it is I might not even take my other guy until the 3rd round or later.

The first member of my band is going to be what I consider the band leader. This position could end up being my vocalist, one of my guitarists, he could play piano, he could play bass. His main role right now is as the main songwriter. I choose Paul McCartney.
My band: Band Leader- Paul McCartney Vocals- Guitar- Guitar- Bass- Drums-
