Quick question. Do we absolutely have to specify what position we are taking someone at? For instance, if you pick a guy who could be either the vocalist or guitar player with your first pick, could you just take him initially and then name what position he will occupy when you make your later picks?
I'm good with this, but I say you need to name an initial position and maybe switch it when the other member is added
It's going to be interesting to see what direction people go. Almost need to decide what type of band you wanna create before you make too many picks, so this could be pretty fun. Adds another dynamic since all the picks need to go together sorta (compared to the band, movie and TV drafts).
I've got my plan pretty much set out and don't foresee anyone making pics that'll screw me up. Like. I'll genuinely be pretty surprised if people take my next two picks before me. It's just gonna be torture waiting for it to get back to me.
The biggest spots I'm not sure about yet are drums and bass (which is funny cause my initial first round pick was gonna be a bass player but couldn't figure out what to build around him)

I'm in the same position. I have one person that I think other people would want, maybe two; otherwise I'm expecting it to be smooth sailing for my band from there.
I think almost all my picks are safe again. Maybe 1 so I should go for him in the first round. At least 2 of my pics most if not all of you will not know who they are until checking them out

I think Entwistle was perfect because I have a lot of options in terms of what I can build around him.
If somebody picks up my #1 choices, I have back ups. This is good because I don't know what people might pick.
Drums are a sore spot for me because that's the thinnest column on my board, and that'll probably be my next pick. My guitar and vocal picks are probably safe, and I've got so many miscellaneous picks I need not worry.

I'm down with this plan. Changing their roll if you come across someone better seems fair. Every draft should have a position on it. If you want to switch them to another spot later, mention it when you draft the musician that will be causing them to shift. There should be some sort of benefit to musicians with multiple talents, other than drafting them as Misc.

Entwistle was my number two but my genre isn't really one that relies too heavily on really skilled bass players. I'll go ahead and give it away since I'm no longer going for it. But, my natural desire for first pick was Les Claypool (aside from Bowie and Hendrix) but my problem that I was having was that his bass sounds so unique that no matter who you put him with, it just sounds like Primus with very minor variations. And, while that is great in real life, that just seems like no fun to me. I've already got a pool of choices in my head to fill the bass slot for me but I've honestly no clue on drums rn.

hugely versatile, both in instruments he plays and styles of music he plays them in. as a bass player he is a personal hero of mine. I will pick John Paul Jones.
This is so much harder than band? draft. There are about ten million directions to go. In the first round you have to both balance versatility with a goal and direction. I think for this game I have to go with what I would like to hear most and say fuck it to trying to please anyone else. Otherwise I'm going to wind up with some strange Frankenband with no cohesion.
With that said with the first round pick I select Jim James on vocals (and adding in guitar too obviously). Am I biased? Sure as fuck I am but here is jim covering great songs from a huge range of genres.
Highly capable as a lead rock, folk, country, soul, r&b, etc not to mention a very good guitarist capable of both subtle rhythm and blistering lead. He has worked with a huge range of artists and is a fantastic backup singer. His songwriting and producing experience will also contribute to the band.
My wife brought up a point, other than just being an awesome group of musicians together, do we need to factor in egos, drug problems or other things that would prevent the band from working together?

Seems like it all just depends on what each voter takes into consideration at the end.
Taking egos and drug habits and stuff like that into account makes it too complicated and is really making assumptions. I say we keep it DIRECTLY related to the music and not personalities. Though, of course, if it were real life, that'd be a vital aspect
I have a proposition. Once the draft is completed, before the voting everyone should submit a 10-15 song setlist of cover songs that your band would perform to be considered in voting

I'd like to think of my band as a real band that only does originals. If they have to be a cover band I'd pick differently.

I can dig that, it'd help get the feel of the band and everything like I was saying about the short description/genre

No, the way I look at it is that the setlist would just act as a way to show you the kind of songs they would make. Like on Pandora, you choose one band and they give you a bunch of random bands that are similar. This would be like if you chose your band on pandora and you are listing the other songs it would play
