and i kinda agree and disagree with you on rating how older games hold up. i definitely agree that goldeneye has aged badly, but i'd still score it a 9+ because i don't think it's fair to compare it to today's level of technology. goldeneye was the absolute SHIT when it came out. everyone and my grandma played that game for a loooooooong time. it was groundbreaking. mario 64 definitely holds up better but i don't think that's a weird metric for measuring a game's value imo. the historical merit plays a part, and nostalgia wouldn't exist if it wasn't a great experience in the first place. but again i totally agree that i would suggest someone to play mario 64 and not goldeneye. thanks for the discussion!
I totally agree with everything here, and these are the reasons I think Goldeneye absolutely deserves its spot near the top of any GOAT game's list.
What I am talking about is a separate thing that strives to answer only one question, "How fun is this game to play in [Today's Date]?"
whoops, missed that haha. that would be a incredibly interesting, although monumental, project. studying the evolution of mechanics and graphics throughout the years would reveal some cool data i think, although really it just kinda boils down to the programming which isn't as exciting. super mario bros holds up great and has excellent replay value. it's graphics aren't the best but they are clean. the movement is smooth and precise. the music is enjoyable and unique. but there are plenty of other platformers with shitty graphics, bad controls, muddled soundtrack, etc. and i suppose that's when getting too detailed would be code A vs. code B, but if you stop at a level where you're just seeing and feeling the effects of the code i think you could do some really neat things with that data.

My mom would never buy me Diablo because it means devil . I used to see the box and cry in eb games and then she'd be about to buy it, and then change her mind at the last second. Ive still never played Diablo to this day...
Dammit @bun I can't believe I missed the greatest Mario game ever made and possibly my favorite game ever by one pick. So I'm going to start myself off with a classic.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
