Notes: We are only drafting individual artists, not groups. All hip-hop artists are available, not just rappers. Each person will have 36 hours to make their selection. I'm making it 16 rounds so that way the draft ends with the draft order snaking back up. If we start getting towards the end and decide we want to keep going, we can have that discussion then. Instead of trying to come up with guidelines on what is or isn't hip-hop, @bandeto has agreed to be our judge. So forward all your questions to him. =)

I was thinking 15 people and 15 rounds. This draft will include BOTH hip-hop groups and the individual members of that group, unless a large amount of people REALLLLY don't like that. This is because I don't think it'd be fair for someone to snag Wutang Clan/D12/Slaughterhouse and get the entire discography of all members, essentially deeply padding their entire roster.
Only thing I'd like to avoid is extensive debates over whether or not someone is considered hip-hop, which could come into play in the later rounds. For instance, I'd consider Frank Ocean and R. Kelly to be hip-hop artists, though they're definitely considered R&B singers. But if we include R&B as a whole, we'd have to include people like Whitney Houston, who I wouldn't consider hip-hop. So I'd like your guys' input on whether we can rustle up some guidelines on whether or not someone is considered hip-hop, or if we should get a third-party judge like we did for the Artist Draft, or to make things simpler just make it a rapper draft. Thoughts?
Notes:
1. For the purposes of this draft, Speakerboxxx and The Love Below will be considered two different albums by their respective creators. And yes, I know they were sold together as an Outkast album. I don't care.
I think it should be rappers, not groups. Just like the band draft. You could draft every member of Wu Tang individually but not the Clan as a whole. Also confused by the last part. We're not drafting albums?

For the last part, I just meant that (for example) if you're drafting the Wu-tang Clan, an album like Liquid Swords shouldn't count in someone decision-making when choosing whether or not to vote for you. I agree that just drafting rappers would be easier, but to exclude formative acts Wu-Tang, the Beastie Boys, and The Fugees would be heresy.

We're just talking about different types of drafts. You're wanting to do it like the first band draft that we did. I was thinking it was going to be like the build a band draft. Building a rap group just like we did the bands.

FWIW, i think it should be like the band or movie draft, something like 10 people pick something like 5 rappers each, and whoever has the best lineup wins.

I think we could definitely do both rap groups and individual emcees, but I'm not sure if what your proposing is possible. For example, if someone drafted Killer Mike, I can't help but take into consideration Mike's contribution to Run the Jewels and Outkast. Just because you say, "You're not supposed to do that", doesn't mean that people aren't gonna do it. Namsayin'?
Seems like we have 2 options:
1. Do both groups and individuals, and just let people take into consideration every draft picks importance to hip hop. or 2. Just do rappers only. Which, like you said, would be a little more simple.
I'm good with option 1 since I also think it would be a travesty to not include all of those great rap groups.

Although I just thought of a third option... What if we did it so that for every draft pick, the draftee selects both an individual rapper and a rap group. So at the end, everyone would have 10 rappers and 10 rap groups (or 15 or however many rounds we decide to do).
I'm a bit murky on the specifics. Is this like the band draft, build-a-band draft, album draft? I thought it was just like the build-a-band draft, but then Jaz confused me with his Speakerboxxx/Love Below comment. Now I don't know if we're drafting bands or albums or artists or what.

I don't know if we've really clarified that yet, but I think it is like the band/album drafts and not building the best rap supergroup.

Ohhhh gotcha. We were on different pages. I just meant a best lineup-type draft like the original band draft.

I'll edit the OP with clarification.
So would Killer Mike still be eligible after RTJ is taken and vice versa? Also hip hip is more then rappers, please dont limit me to just rappers. Don't want to expand on that cause I don't want to spoil my board. I would prefer option 2 to get past the killermike rtj dilema but have it be "artists" instead of "rapper"

Did you see option 3 though? It might make the most sense.
Did you see option 3 though? It might make the most sense.
I don't really care for that option, personally. I'd like the think I'm rather hip-hop literate, but if we had 15 people and 15 rounds, that's 125 hip-hop groups, and I don't think I even know of that many. At the end we'd really be scratching the bottom of the barrel.

True, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe cuz I might be able to go a little deeper on this than some others, I'm kind of a closet hip-hop head.

i really think it should just be taking individual rappers, because it wouldn't really make sense if someone takes NWA then no one can draft Dre Cube or E.

I think the way it is right now, someone could draft NWA and then other people would still be able to draft Cube, Dre, Eazy, etc.

i don't think that works either tbh, it creates too much of a grey area, also considering most rap groups changed a lot throughout their careers.
