It is pretty shitty/outrageous that a festival on the complete opposite side of the continent and taking place 3 months later is effecting their booking.
Guys I understand this lineup is more hiphop heavy up top. We tried to get a big electronic leftfield piece to balance it out but being in February presents radius clause issues from some of the major festivals that wouldn't have let us announce/book some of major acts.
But isnt this an issue that you guys knew when the February move was decided? Also seems like its always going to be an issue in the future. Coachella/UMF is always gonna present radius clause issues. Is your plan to just book unique electronic acts that dont want to play Coachella or UMF?

Can’t you just get a big electronic act to Skype in?

I don't think that doesn't make much sense. Coachella will always have and want to have the newest and coolest stuff at their fest so I don't think III Point's nor any other fest can pull up some plan to book the most obscure stuff cause that simply won't work. Coachella is just that strong in the US market, I think? Peggy Gou and Yaeji can play this cause they played Coachella this year but for the ones that are doing some good shit in the underground, III Points is probably stepping on some toes of Coachella. Apart from the techno line up at Ultra (which isn't already that big), I don't think there are many DJs that could cross over, plus I think if UMF books techno, they just book mainstream techno acts..

I don't know what you're asking here really. But they've been playing it almost constantly since Rock The Bells 2011, and did a giant run of dates for the 20th anniversary. I've seen them play it 3 or 4 times. Is it good live? Yes. Is it unique or a clever booking? No. The same can really be said for the rest of the lineup minus a handful of bookings. This was way over hyped and this is the only lineup this fest has put out that really doesn't intrigue me in the slightest.
I'm not asking anything. Yes, they toured behind the anniversary three years ago. Since then maybe they've done a show here and there, but nothing to the same extent. *You* might've seen them three or four times so maybe seeing them on a lineup doesn't do anything for you but on the other side of that is someone who's just as big a fan, had one chance to see them, missed it, and has another shot now all while going to a fest offering pretty good acts all around. What other fest has booked Only Built 4 Cuban Linx live in the past few years? You can probably count em on one hand, if there are any at all. Seems unique to me.
I mean, hate to agree with that guy, but it is kinda fucked up that Coach gets to have this monopoly and it's fine and people defend it.
It isn’t if you go though.
I guess, but it would be better for everyone if it didn't exist that way. Wouldn't you like to have something like that closer to you? I'm not sure how they managed to get this deal where they pretty much dictate what every other festival can do. Sweet deal.
I'm sure some of these DJs will be at Coachella. Probably mostly just affects the bigger names like Thom and Aphex. There's plenty of big electronic acts that won't be at Coachella so I don't think they need to drastically change anything besides just booking them.

I get what you’re saying, but no. I like that there are small festivals that book lineups like this fest or Movement. I also love that someone is booking a giant bill in the US with everything under the sun. Ultra has to affect booking for this fest a ton too.

It's because it's more important for most acts to play Coachella than any other fest.

Overall I think it’s better for fans that this fest, UMF and Coachella will only have a little bit of overlap instead of a lot. I do have sympathy for these guys cause it makes booking harder (and my impression is they’re only doing it this time of year for hurricane reasons). I don’t have any sympathy for that fest in California that’s suing AEG because they definitely were just trying to free ride Coachella.

Most people can't afford to attend fests on opposite sides of the country. So I don't think it should matter if they overlap.

People complain that festival lineups are too homogeneous with a lot of overlap between lineups. It would possibly be worse if radius clauses didn’t exist. Not saying I’m 100% in favor of them but from a business stand point, they absolutely make sense.
Isn't the Coachella clause that would affect this just that they get to announce stuff first? I wonder if Julie is planning to have any additions after Coachella releases it's lineup.

Having a consolidated music industry where the same handful of artists get most of the exposure and play most of the fests is bad.
Generally, yes. But in this case, I seriously doubt III Points was going after Childish Gambino or Rihanna. Little to nobody is gonna complain about some some left-field electronic acts popping up at a local fest 2 months before Coachella on the polar side of the continent.
