Love surprises at Newport. Hope this one doesn't leak like MMJ did a few years ago. Although that leak helped quell the expectations, whereas the 65 Revisited set was so overly hyped up almost nothing could have fulfilled the expectations.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I've gone back and forth as to how "weak" this year's lineup is. Off the top of my head I feel it's weak but whenever I go look at the entire lineup I quickly get excited again.
Rather than it being weak, there's simply a major chunk of artists that I'm unfamiliar with but when I look back at the last three festivals, save for a couple personal favorites, the sets I've always enjoyed the most and look back at fondly were typically bands I didn't know of prior to the festival.
Yeah the fact that she's doing NY and not anything farther north of that has me hopeful. I discovered her late and haven't had the opportunity to see her other than '65 Revisited
Funnily enough, one of the last times she was at Newport both Jim James and the Avetts were also there. Some things never change.
There was a 30 Songs in 30 days project that led up to the election. Both Death Cab (Ben Gibbard) and Jim James contributed songs for that. Andrew Bird, collab with Jim James, also contributed and is open that weekend. El Vy also did, so maybe Matt Berninger? I shouldn't get too ahead of myself I guess, but it's pretty high up on the billing.

Conor Oberst would seem like the obvious guess. Or maybe this is just code for that acoustic RATM set
"The Power of song" which is mentioned in the announcement is the name of a documentary of Pete Seeger that came out in 2007, I though that was pretty interesting.

Means nothing, just some odd knowledge.
And you know some of the people in that doc -- Springsteen, Baez, Cash, Paul Stookey, Arlo...Just saying' I'll be on the road Sunday, and regardless who plays could be one of the most memorable moments in quite some time. Hopefully will be live on WFUV, etc.

They removed the "more to come" tile from Sunday...that wasn't like that yesterday. Not announcing the last one for Sunday?
Doesn't surprise me at all. Between the Tribute To Chuck and Speak Out we may be seeing more artists than we bargained for that day. They may be giving more time to one or both of those sets. Mini festivals.
Nice! When I saw the Decemberists in Brooklyn a couple weeks ago they brought out Olivia to play a song from this project. Will be interested to see a full set
I ain't-a-complaining anymore. The Decemberists would have been enough! But way back here when I suggested Ian Anderson to play old English folk, I hadn't considered we might be getting Fairport Convention circa 2017. Starting to think back to my concerts of Renaissance (with Annie Haslam). Or, actually, Newport four years ago with (I think) the Avett Brothers and Decemberists and Ramblin' Jack..and the Lumineers. So psyched.
And perhaps they cut one act on Sunday because they don't want anything remotely competing with the Main Stage come that last hour.
Who or what will be that final Saturday announcement??? Wouldn't be surprised if its a surprise.
Gillian Welch or Bob Weir are my hopes for more typical artists. But considering the countless curveballs they've been throwing this year I have no idea what to expect.
