I checked out Choir!Choir!Choir! at Ottawa Bluesfest yesterday and they were SUPER FUN. They passed out lyric sheets throughout the audience and taught the crowd harmonies and backup parts to the songs they played (Harvest Moon by Neil Young, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, & Ahead By a Century by Tragically Hip). I'm bummed they're the same time as Pres Hall, but I'm definitely going to check out as much as I can. I could definitely see Newport inviting them back every year.
This is sorta their deal when they do their weekly "shows" in Toronto.

Friday: Joshua Hedley -> Joe Purdy -> Big Thief/L.A. Salami -> Alone & Together -> Ben Gibbard -> Head & the Heart -> Fleet Foxes Saturday: Mt. Joy -> Grandma's Hands Band -> Mandolin Orange -> Nikki Lane -> Jim James -> DBT -> Wilco Sunday: Pres Hall -> Chuck! -> Michael Kiwanuka -> Whitney -> Dr. Dog -> Speak Out -> John Prine
That schedule released yesterday wasnt too far off so im glad with how this all came out! Still wondering who that unannounced Harbor artist is on Sunday? I know many are saying Jack White is bound for an appearance but im thinking that Harbor slot is for either Deer Tick or Lillie Mae.
Justin Vernon maybe?
I'm thinking it's going to be one of the Prine guests. So that would be Isbell/Shires/Vernon/Musgraves
After Isbell whined about not having full sets at festivals, I doubt it will be him.
I think his complaint was his fans paying large amounts of money and not being able to see a full set of his music. An unannounced set would alleviate that concern. That being said, I think it's going to be Amanda Shires/Kacey Musgraves

It's really weird to have an unannounced set in the middle of the day on Sunday on the Harbor Stage. That stage is just too small for anybody who would maybe require an unannounced set like a Justin Vernon or a Jack White. I do think it will be somebody with a John Prine connection or a Third Man Records Connection. My guesses would be:
John Prine Connection: Iris DeMent, Kacey Musgraves (Although this stage is probably too small for her too) Third Man Connection: Pokey Lafarge, Secret Sisters (Who would actually make sense being slotted right before John Paul White since they are featured heavily on his solo album and toured it with him)
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
I think it needs to be someone that is going to keep the crowd. How bad would it look from the artists view if the crowd starts funneling out when it doesn't deliver the punch that the "unannounced " tag has in past years!

There were people that left the rail when MMJ was the unannounced. Also lots of idiots left the D'Angelo superjam.

Yeah, that's the other side of the argument. Kacey would probably be the perfect middle ground. She would keep a pretty big crowd but not so big a crowd that it would make it impossible to migrate to and from the Quad.

Vernon and Kacey seem like the most plausible guesses so far. An Isbell/Shires acoustic set would be pretty cool too.
Some other guesses nobody's mentioned yet:
First Aid Kit Arlo Guthrie Dan Auerbach that new Brittany Howard group Nathaniel Rateliff Megafaun (I'm not giving up hope yet)
EDIT: also Colin Meloy
I keep going back to what would be the reason the artists is unannounced. For MMJ in 2015, it was because of radius restrictions, and for James Taylor the same year, it was an abbreviated set. This seems like a full set and I don't think the radius restriction would keep out a band that would play the Harbor Stage. Perhaps, it's just a bigger name, who wants to play a smaller, more intimate stage at Newport. Justin Vernon solo seems to be a good guess (and he could have been radius restricted out because of Boston Calling). A stripped down Isbell/Shires set would be at the top of my list, but with Isbell playing the Prine tribute in Nashville on the Thursday, I'm feeling less confident that they are going to leave home and get on the road for Newport. Either way, I'm sure it will be a special set.

Pulling for Arlo, Musgraves, or The Secret Sisters myself.
Could also be Charles Bradley or Langhorne as well considering the pre-show Thursday night. Margo Price possibly too?
Langhorne actually makes sense here since he just played a show in Cambridge on Sunday. He feels like a appropriate size and (Newport) popularity that people would go nuts for an unannounced Harbor set and not get bummed out and leave.

Won't be Langhorne or Charles Bradley, both are headed to Canada after their Newport Blues gig.
