Pulling for Arlo, Musgraves, or The Secret Sisters myself.
Could also be Charles Bradley or Langhorne as well considering the pre-show Thursday night. Margo Price possibly too?
Langhorne actually makes sense here since he just played a show in Cambridge on Sunday. He feels like a appropriate size and (Newport) popularity that people would go nuts for an unannounced Harbor set and not get bummed out and leave.
Margo Price's schedule works, but that would be 2 years in a row. She'll probably show up and guest on some sets, but I really don't think the unannounced set will be someone who had an announced one last year.

Won't be Langhorne or Charles Bradley, both are headed to Canada after their Newport Blues gig.

Hasn't Berklee always been at the Fort stage? They're obviously better suited for the Quad than Pres. Hall, but still, the times they are a'changin.
Also, unannounced is at Harbor stage, which would honestly be a bigger crowd issue than the Quad!
I was saying that in jest. When and where else would Berklee play? Again?
Oh I know, I figured as much. I was more pointing out that, unless I'm remembering incorrectly, they typically performed on the main stage to open up Sunday.
Kurt Vile would make a pretty cool guest for John Prine, although unfortunately I think he was just up around the northeast, so I don't know if he'll swing back around just for Newport.
My son and I went to see Fleet Foxes tonight while on vacation in Ireland. They are absolutely on top of their game right now. They played a mix of old plus new songs. After the encore they spent time playing audience requests. Pecknold is only growing in confidence and has great interaction with the audience. You can tell the band prepares extremely well. They sound better live and put on one hell of a show. Expect great things at Newport!

I'm definitely glad I'll be going to the Portland show. Both because it's the U.S. tour opener and because it seems like it'll definitely benefit from the full set time.
So, the last remaining thing to obsess over before going to the fort is who the unannounced guests are going to be. There are at least four scheduled sets that don't have announced guests and then there are the random pop-ups that could occur as well as guest accompaniments such as John Prine's. There has been some theorizing as well as confirmations on this thread... to summarize (bold ones are confirmed... I think. The rest are theories that have been posted:)
Grandma's Hands Band: Hiss Golden Messenger Tribute to Chuck: Nathaniel Rateliff, Brittany Howard (and group?), Tom Morello, Gary Clark Jr. Unannounced: Margot Price, Iris Dement, Arlo Guthrie, Pokey Lafarge, Secret Sisters, Colin Moloy, Lily Mae, Conor Oberst (Plays with WIlco on 7/28) Speak Out: Arlo Guthrie, John Prine's guests: Isbell/Shires/Vernon/Musgraves, Iris Dement
Some additional thoughts Could we have a My Morning Jacket set since Carl Broemel and Jim James are both playing there already? Wouldn't it make a lot of sense for Patti Smith to come back unannounced? It was so magic last year, and she seems like she would ask to be unannounced and she seems to make the 'Speak Out' billing/stage make a lot of sense. If Justin Vernon is going to be there, wouldn't it make sense for a Bon Iver set in one of these? Other classic folk singers would make sense for Speak Out... ie Joan Baez, Graham Nash though he is in Chicago the two days before.
If not, then what can we possibly expect from that "solo" set?
He's been quoted as saying that he is only coming with a acoustic guitar this year.
I'm holding out hope for MoF set...probably very high hopes, but I'm ok with it.
Four years ago JJ had a set with a lot of effects and, a lot of noise, and hardly MMJ. I don't recall a backing band. But then again, my car is parked right outside, and it will probably take me 10 minutes to find it.

This will be at least his third time at newport performing as Jim James/Yim Yames.
First time was either 2009 or 2010 with just him and a guitar playing mmj songs and i think some other folk tunes. second time was 2013 with a full, kickass electric backing band that he toured with behind regions of light and sounds of god.
i imagine this set will feature stuff like Golden, Steam Engine, Wonderful, and then probably some timely and appropriate covers

Vernon is confirmed for Grandmas Hands as well.
I would add Dan Auerbach to the list of Prine guests and unannounced possibilities
I don't see where/when a Jacket show would happen, because it's definitely not happening on the Harbor Stage
Patti Smith most likely won't be back, but I guess it's possible she does a song during Speak Out

I'm also still holding out for an MOF set too, and have long thought that Conor Oberst's absence is conspicuous. I think he pops up for Jim James and is part of Speak out, which I expect to be a lot like '65 Revisited--lots of folk favorites playing political tunes together. I can't imagine it'll be just one person...unless of course it's Springsteen...
You're right. James did have a kick ass band in 2013. To be honest -- and I thought Reinwolf was a highlight so I have nothing against using feedback as an instrument, shredding strings, and deafening the vendors along the stage -- but I thought James set in 2013 was a low point for him. It''s not etched in my memory, but recall thinking wrong place, wrong time. I'm sure I have been crossed off many Christmas lists just now.

Jay said it's going to be a platform for any artist to come and play a song about "their cause". I think every song will have a different band.

You weren't wrong. Reinwolf was awesome. I was just going to catch a song or two and couldn't leave.
I was also not thrilled with JJ solo in 2013 and I think I'll love if he just takes his acoustic to the Quad and digs into the MMJ catalog. I wouldn't leave that one either.

I know in my heart Springsteen's not coming, but as long as all the pieces fit (not out of the country, Seeger devotee, political af, been quiet since election, working on a solo album) I'm gonna keep the dream alive.
This'll be my fifth fest overall (09, 14-17) but I've moved to the west coast so it's gonna get tougher. I figure I'm going until Springsteen is there, because it's gonna happen eventually.

Jay did say that there's a few artists coming just to perfor a song during this set, so it is possible!

I think I've mentioned both of these before but now seems to be a good time to bring them up again while we're compiling our predictions and confirmations.
Jay had said on the Podcast that the idea for speak Out came from a conversation with Spirit Family Reunion. They're playing the museum on Sunday and I tweeted out something about hoping they'll perform Goin' Out to Cannon Ball during Speak Out and they favorited it if that means anything.
I also think First Aid Kit did an AMA or a live Instagram video or something where they said they'd be in New England at some point this summer. They don't have any tour dates around here but are touring in Europe and Texas in August... so stopping by the Fort to perform You Are the Problem Here during Speak Out would make sense.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Spirit Family Reunion have certainly been working their way into the festival as a "regular" much like Dawes, Deer Tick, and others. I just wish they still had Mat Davidson in the group as his songs really won me over the first few times I saw them. Still an awesome live act, though.
Edit: Just discovered he has a new band Twain. Will be digging into them now. And they're opening for Langhorne Slim in NY in September!
