I'm missing some people too. I just can't place the names.
Motherfucker, another great group. The Pickens shows tonight and last night are some of the best aftershows Newport's done for my tastes and I wasn't at either.
Vanessa Carlton has been on my early list of 2018 predictions, this definitely bumps that up a notch. Could easily see her closing the Harbor
Well, yesterday will probably go down as one of the happiest and most fun days of my life.
I thought, going in, that Saturday's Newport schedule was the weakest, so maybe lower expectations helped make it something. Also, being only our second year coming had only decided to see one after show which was Langhorne Slim. However, we made the split decision Saturday morning to get tickets to the Texas Gentleman after party as they were still available. Best. Decision. Ever.
For the day, I really enjoyed every set I saw. GHB, Wilco, Avett, Robert Ellis, Mt. Joy and parts of Joseph and Jalen N'Gonda. Went home buzzing.
The Texas Gentlemen after party was a poorly organized, once in a lifetime (for me so far anyway) musical event. We got there at 8:15 fully expecting the music to start at 9:00 and feeling pretty exhausted from Newport already. Figured we would get a table to eat and, that way, could have seats for the show. We were finished by 9:45 and the music hadn't started and they told us they wanted the table for others who wanted to eat. So we moved to stand near the stage and the place was still pretty thin at 10:15 and nobody had started. Was seriously contemplating leaving when I fell into a conversation with an interesting guy who has been driving artists for the festival for 32 years and after some great stories, he asked me if I knew who the Texas Gentleman's special guests were. Turns out the "Unannounced" artist from today was going to perform with them. At that, I was sold that this could be something special. Spirit Family Reunion finally started playing at 10:30 and did a great set. Really liked Cannonball which I hope to see again today at the Speak Out set as someone had referenced earlier on this board.
It was during their set that I started to recognize all sorts of folk artists gathering by the side of the stage. There was JP Harris and Chance McCoy, Ian Fitzgerald, the unannounced artist, Charlie Sexton, and someone mentioned they saw David Rawlings. When I saw that both Jay Sweet and Bob Boilen were there I started to get the sense that we were in the right place.
During the set change we moved to the very front where we got to witness the most frustrating of sound checks. Multiple mikes and floor monitors were not working and it seemed like they never would. The band was particularly frustrated by the fact that the lead singers vocals weren't coming through on their speakers which, when the show, started, it became obvious why that was really the only critical thing to get working.
The actual show was amazing. The Texas Gentlemen are so musically talented and fun to watch perform. They play so effortlessly together and are able to pick up a song based on almost no information. Each new guest that came on might bring a lyric sheet but more often would turn to the band and say a key and a few notes and somehow the whole thing would sound amazing. All of this while still being challenged by the sound system and struggling to hear the lead's vocals.
They did a couple of songs on their own, then Charlie Sexton joined them and rocked the house, then the Unannounced artist joined them (which I won't spoil for those that are still holding out, but I will say that I am more excited for their set now rather than less,) then JP Harris and Chance McCoy, then another country singer whose name I missed.
I am sad to say that it was 1:00 am and I am not built for this so we ended up leaving before the end. There were more guests to play and I have no idea what time it ended. Highlight on the way out was the brief conversation with Bob Boilen and his warm hug for my wife. (I know weird to have a guy hugging your wife be a highlight, but I will only say I was jealous I only got a handshake.)
Long post for a Sunday morning at Newport, but I am an early bird and woke up at 5:45 buzzing from the night before so rather than wake others, I am sharing my thoughts with you all.

Days 1 & 2 have been an absolute blast. Got my father to the fest for the first time and my brother back for year 2. Got into my second deer tick show at Newport blues. So excited for day 3 but highlights so far have been:
The Wild Reeds, who we have now seen 3 times.
Fleet Foxes. Saw them here in 09 and holy hell does robin pecknold have that band together.
Spirit of 67. So intimate, so beautiful, so awesome.
Didn't see a bad set yesterday. Grandma's hands, I think, is something we'll never see again. Jim James' voice is once in a generation. JP Harris and Chance McCoy did some mighty fine pickin' and a singin'. Billy Bragg and Joe Henry are historians. And Wilco didn't disappoint, not that they ever have.
Offa rex were cool, but I thought they were gonna sound more like how they ended the set than they did. Still great though.
I had never seen wilco or really even listened to them much, but I was very impressed.
I also wandered into Robert Ellis on the way over to Nikki lane and ended up staying till the end. The only downside to that was I wish I got to see more of Nikki. Such is the case with conflicts I guess.
I finished off the day at pour judgement and there ended up being a pretty awesome band there in addition to a great beer selection and good food.
Can't wait for today, but there are so many conflictsi have no idea whay I'm doing yet. Also going to newport blues tonight for the first time so that will be awesome.
Is this the first Justin Vernon appearance all weekend? Or did he pop up at all at the actual festival?
According to Twitter (comments Justin Vernon may have made in the past?), he will also be joining ______ (insert artist here to not spoil) today. Cheers!
At least they're showing him the Folk life. He'll be back.
Also I would love to hear who the unannounced artist is if any of yinz want to PM it.

I'm speechless after this weekend. Hopefully I can give you my thoughts from Sat/Sun in the next couple of days. I'm happy Deer Tick is live streaming their aftershows since I didn't get Sunday tickets.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Also, I apologize to everyone who I told Nathaniel Rateliff would be solo. The info I got had no mention of the Night Sweats so combined with it being on the Harbor I figured it'd just be him. The crowd for that was massive
What was the song that Jim James and Nick Offerman sang during speak out? It was fantastic. Though I got worried about myself when I cheered the line that basically said "I hope you die"
Also, it would be awesome if someone could do an annotation of a photo of that final John Prine song. There were so many Artis up there that are part of the Newport family but I only recognize so many of them without introductions.
One additional quick thought, never heard of Kyle craft, but he was amazing doing "We Can Be Heroes" at the speak out session.
Would love to hear a summary of what happened at deer tick last night when y'all wake up.

- Masters of War by Bob Dylan. I love that song and I was really hoping someone would play it for that set but figured they'd go with a bigger Dylan song like Blowin In the Wind. That version was incredible.
- I saw Kyle Craft play solo in the museum stage last year. Had kind of forgotten about him and didn't recognize him when he came out but yeah that was a killer performance
