Not sure what happened at jane pickens tonight will be topped all weekend
We had tickets to go tonight but thought we would try and hit up both the spirit of 67' and the JPT show however it didn't work out that way. We ended up staying the whole time at spirit of 67'. Who all showed up tonight for the JPT show?

JPT was awesome yet again! Guests included:
Elvis Perkins Hiss Golden Messenger Phil Cook Carl Broemel Joe Pug Mandolin Orange Rayland Baxter Eric Slick Natalie Prasser (spelling?) Nicole Atkins Jim James
The Grateful Dead Wolf guitar!
Highlight for me was mandolin orange and the alone and Together boys leading an uptempo Mando heavy version. Of "Last Kiss", but there was plenty of action!

I was at the JPT show and I don't think I'll ever see anything like that again this weekend. I grabbed a setlist and will transcribe it below:
Good Place Destroyer Loser Messenger 79 Shiny Toy Guns (Rayland Baxter Solo) Unknown (Phil Cook comes out) Mountain Rain (Phil Cook & HGM) Nightmericans (Elvis Perkins) Brand New TN (Joe Pug & Mandolin Orange) Last Kiss (Mandolin Orange) Dirge (Eric Slick) Sound of Silence (Natalie Prass) There is a war Ohh La La (Carl Broemel) Darkness (Nicole Atkins) Candyman (The Wolf comes out and Jim James steps in) Wild Honey (Jim James) Mercy (Jim James) Give Peace a Chance (Everyone) Ain't Goin (Everyone) And We Bid You Goodnight
I may have missed one song that they added towards the end of setlist but this is pretty complete

Great day and night! Joshua Hedley and Blind Pilot were probably my favs, but didn't see anything disappointing. Had to wait over an hour for beer tokens at the Quad though which was a bit of a piss off. Deer Tick were awesome, but their set seemed pretty short. Probably only an hour and twenty minutes tops. Rafay Rashid from Ravi Shavi joined them for a Misfits cover and Robert Ellis joined them for two Billy Joel tunes. The new songs came across great live and they ended with their killer Auld Triangle cover. I'm probably missing a cool moment or two. Day two wut uppppppppp!
Started the day with Matt The Electrician and my admiration for him grew even more. "Osaka In The Rain" is just such a beautiful song.
Caught the last half of Aaron Lee and he was absolutely wonderful.
Wandered around for a bit and kinda kicked myself when I walked past Wild Reeds and saw just how packed it was. Listened from afar to a couple of songs and I could understand why the large crowd.
Blind Pilot was awesome, I always forget how many of their songs I love. Also got to enjoy my first lobster roll at the Fort in 4 years of attending! (I had no idea they were actually good ones until it was mentioned the other day in this thread - it lived up to what y'all said)
Wanted to go see Big Thief but I got rather irritated with the heavy policing of the tunnel side of the tent and wound up going to see Hurray. They were fantastic... I definitely need to be in the right mood/state to really get into her for more than a song or two so fortunately the stars aligned today and I got to catch and enjoy the entire act.
Caught the first few songs of Alone & Together and I liked it and the idea behind it, but it was just a bit too mellow for me (They made up for that at JPT for sure!)
Wandered for a bit and caught the first half of Brent Cobb... Being a Texan, I'll always go for some good country and he definitely helped fill up my tanks.
Caught some of Beantown Throwdown and liked it but didn't see nearly enough to form a good opinion of it (was there for maybe 25 minutes)
Gibbard was way too crowded... Didn't last a full song before wandering again. Caught some of Nancy and Beth and while they were certainly funny, it just wasn't my thing. I preferred the music focused comedy that John C. Reilly and Ed Helmes had in their acts... This just seemed more like a comedy show with a few songs thrown in (that they did sing well). Maybe next time...
The Head and The Heart... I was really looking forward to them as I've had a history of unfortunate circumstances around getting to see them (life events coming up, bad weather, and a friend having a meltdown while they were playing at BC a few years ago and causing me to miss the entire set)... Unfortunately, I was extremely disappointed with their performance today. Charity sounded absolutely terrible to me. I looked around and thought I must be crazy because everyone around me was eating it up, but I went and got a snack and came back and immediately heard her voice sticking out like a sore thumb yet again. Definitely the disappointment of the day but I had to push through it to try and get a good spot for FF.
Holy hell, Fleet Foxes. Wow!They were absolutely phenomenal. They were my only absolute "must" of the day and they blew me away. Kinda wished they would have closed with a traditional folk cover, but they played the hell out of Helplessness Blues to close out an incredible set. So thankful to cross them off of my bucket list with such a wonderful performance.
JPT! This was my first JPT show since I started attending the festival and now I'll try my damnedest to never miss another one. Last Kiss was so awesome. Not a single complaint about that show.
Tomorrow will be one long long day, should get some rest. See everyone at the Fort in a few hours!
Highlights so far: - Langhorne Slim opening things up Thursday night. He brought the love and energy that makes Newport Newport. Had my first tear-filled set before even hitting the fort. - Matt the Electrician... he is such an authentic musician with a beautiful voice... loved the cover of Paul Simon's 'American Tune' at the end. - The Wild Reeds killed it. The place was rocking. 'Only Songs' closing was awesome. - Big Thief... not the whole set, per se, but when the lead singer, Adrianne broke out of the normal set and confessed her nervousness and excitement about being at Newport. Asked what they should play and people shouted out Big Thief songs which clearly moved her. The whole... you know my music at Newport thing. I shouted the new song that was on All Songs... Mary, which everyone should listen to as it is awesome and they played it. (It wasn't only me who shouted it of course but I like to pretend I have personal connection with the performers at all times.) It was clear that they hadn't prepared to play it and they had to restart after the first verse at which point she put down her guitar and just sang. And it was amazing. Standing ovation at the end. Saw her later watching Regina Spektor and felt like Big Thief is going to really take off. - And, of course Fleet Foxes were great. Still feel like their newest album is difficult for me to get into, but the band was super tight and talented and all the old songs were great.
Today... really looking forward to Cluster Folk at the end of the day. Hoping for good weather.
I will be in a Cherry Garcia T-shirt if anyone wants to say Hi.

That was probably my favorite set of the day yesterday. I'm pretty sure the start and stop during "Mary" was more because the arrangement they were playing seemed completely improvised. When I saw them open for Conor Oberst last week they played it much closer to the album. That version yesterday was incredible though, and I'm glad NPR was broadcasting because I'll definitely be going back to that recording

Friday Summary:
Started by waiting in line for 50 minutes to get some Newport Folk tees with my niece. Luckily my girlfriend and parents managed to secure second row seats at the Harbor Stage for Matt The electrician. I didn't listen to any of his music going in but he blew me away. As somebody said earlier, "Osaka in the Rain" was outstanding.
Next we caught Aaron lee Tasjan which I fully expected to be great and I was very right. I got some major 2013 Father John Misty vibes. He and the other guitarist played some of the best solos I think I've heard at the Fort.
We then checked out Ryan Montbleau at the Family tent and got to see him play 75 and Sunny and then listened to Blind Pilot from afar while eating at the shade tent.
At this point I wanted to see LA Salami but the Harbor Stage was PACKED so we decided to get to the Quad early to camp there for the next four sets. I managed to secure fourth row seats for:
Big Thief: I was expecting this to be the most talked about set of the day but haven't read much yet. This set was pretty hit or miss. I could see a lot of people in the crowd were uncomfortable with Adrianne's nervousness and anxiety. When she put the guitar down and crooned on Mary she won over the crowd and got a well-deserved standing ovation but later in the set she kneeled down with her back to the audience and played a very avant-garde "guitar solo" maybe 3 different notes that repeated themselves over and over which lasted about 10 minutes. Sound people were running around confused talking with the other band members who also looked confused. People in the crowd started to get impatient again. Some people left; some were laughing. They got another standing ovation when they left the stage but I felt like it was a nod back to the Mary standing ovation.
Alone & Together: They were good... a little too mellow. The sound reminded me a bit of Wilco. It was a nice technical set to get people comfortable again after the Big Thief set. I'm not familiar with the work of anybody in this project but couldn't give up the great seats for...
Ben Gibbard: My niece is calling his set her favorite moment of the summer. He played a fantastic set. It was just him on stage with either a guitar or piano. He played a good amount of Death Cab For Cutie songs and even opened with a Such Great Heights. His banter was pretty good especially when he got into his hatred for audiences clapping on beat (which led the crowd to start clapping on beat to troll him).
Regina Spektor: She was maybe 10-15 minute late which really sucked because I already knew I was leaving her set at 6:05 and no later to get a reasonable spot for Fleet Foxes. When she finally took the stage she wasted no time and I ended up seeing 5 or 6 songs. If I saw the full set it would probably be my favorite of the year. She sounded fantastic and was definitely digging the Newport vibe.
We then rushed to the Fleet Foxes set and surprisingly got there before they took the stage. Helplessness Blues is one of my all-time favorite albums and The Shrine/An Argument one of my all-time favorite songs. I was pretty upset to see that one left off the set list. The negatives end there. They sounded fantastic. I can also appreciate Robin's growth as somebody who has social anxiety. When I saw them in 2011 I think he talked once just to thank the opening act and thank the crowd. It felt very forced and uncomfortable. I think his time at Columbia helped him to work through that. I enjoyed seeming him talked with the audience and seeming to feel more comfortable.
On to day 2! It's going to be a very relaxed day as there isn't anything I care about too much today. I'll be leaving the Fort early to hopefully be the first in line for the Deer Tick after party.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Does anyone know how Newport Blues handles backpacks and bags? We've got tickets for tonight but are trying to come right from the fest in someone else's car...any assistance much appreciated!
Ben Gibbard was the highlight of the day for me by far. Obviously he sounded amazing, but he also seemed to be having a great time on stage. He was definitely impressed by the crowd and so was I. Not just at his set, but throughout the day people were so respectful and you can tell that they are there for the music. Whenever an artist would pause I was amazed at the silence. At any other festival or even most small venues there is at least a little bit of crowd chatter. The only downside to this was the very noticeable sound bleed when the head and the heart started.

I was at the Quad from Seratones to Ben Gibbard; third row too. All were good sets but Big Thief was a bit strange. I also had to tell Joe Purdy I had no idea who he was. Also Kevin Morby and I kept making eye contact because I only knew his songs.
So, Grandma's Hands was pretty awesome. Best set of the day.
I'm a little surprised Christopher Paul Stelling was in the museum, after being on Harbor a couple years ago. Wanted to check out that set but not a fan of lines.
Stumbled across Robert Ellis, caught the second half of that set and it was enjoyable.
I am probably in the minority on this, but that Jim James set was disappointing. A lot of it seemed like he was doing it on the fly. The Prince cover was cool, but there was a lot of preachy and/or snobby bullshit I could have lived without. The sound bleed from the Avetts didn't help either.
1) grandma's hands band made my eyeballs fall out of my head. for me, the coolest thing that's happened at modern day newport besides Roger Waters.
2) i cant believe i haven't been that into wilco before that performance. that was stupendous.
3) nikki lane is the shit.
100% with you on 1 and 2. I've never really made an effort to dig into Wilco beyond Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and a couple other songs but I absolutely loved that set. GHB was one for the Newport history books.
Nikki is the shit, but Angel Olsen is a fucking queen. Probably my favorite set of the day, which I was not expecting. The Jim James appearance just sealed the deal.
