I think it's like the stereogum article said, it's a lineup based on streaming which = lazy and/or fear. And they probably should be fearful because they haven't developed a client base...which is surely do to all the management changes that have occurred through the years. Without the venue they have, it would have already failed. I thought '17 was a little bit of a bounce back from '16, but this year is the undeniable bottom of the run. But, I guess if it draws, then the formula works. We'll see!
It feels a lot like 2015 to me. A lot of re-runs from 2015 like Foster the People and Cold War Kids. Hangout has traded the "music festival" title for "pop show". The 2018 version of "Beach Blanket Bingo" or other 60's beach movie with current Franki Valli and Beach Boys.
If I were king, ode to Tom Petty, I would have a blended musical genre festival with something for everyone. As it is....pretty much "girls gone wild". I have already heard from friends that this is the perfect "moms and daughters weekend to go to the beach".
2015 had many under the radar shows. Break Science and Friends. Preservation Hall and Friends, etc. Overall it was pop, but there was enough quality shit in the background to make for 3 pretty great days.
One person doesn't make a difference, but y'all settling for this shit the last 2 years hasn't helped.
I agree. But you know that for a lot of us the trip/experience made up for/balanced out what was missing musically.
I understand that. But you could have just as easily driven to Jacksonville for Welcome to Rockville as you are Solidrock. Even smaller Gasparilla Fest in Tampa. You don't need the fest on the beach to go to the beach if it's 10 minutes away. Y'all were lazy, and Hangout got lazier.

No, I did it because I liked it and don't regret any of it. Had a great time every year. And no, being near the beach is not the same as being on the beach for me.

Don't you put this on me Ricky Bobby!
it's all your fault mf. \m/
Having said that, you get a chance to see some real music. And you can go to the beach and stay on the beach when it's less expensive to do so.
Someone really has to help me out here. You got EDC, Ultra, Electric Forest kind of EDM festivals all over the country. You probably got your hiphop, country and folk type of festivals aswell. So why is there a need for a rock/indie/alternative festivals to make up a program that will only appeal to that type of demographic when there are so many festivals, concerts and parties for 'the kids'. This line up makes me feel like Pemberton last year. Hangout and so many more festivals in the US got no backbone at all. They want to appeal everyone at once and don't know what to do. Do they know what kind of demographic they want to target by making up their program, or not? There are already so many things to offer to that demographic and you're gonna create even more 'offer'. This will only lead to the (festival)bubble splashing between this and the next few years.
The festivals do it on themselves by programming such things, you attract a certain audience and will leave a certain audience left out and those will probably choose something else this year and probably the following years if you continue to program such way. I can understand that there's a dance tent or something but that an act like The Chainsmokers can headline a festival in the US that isn't EDM based baffles me.
dude, your avi is literally a hangout headliner from last year.

Are you serious? One act doesn't make the line up though? How many times was the undercard discussed in the Roo thread this year and came to the basic conclusion it was shiz? No, wait they got Kendrick soooo that makes everything okay, right? :')

I was wondering if anyone in this thread took a look at the social media response yesterday... because the demo theyre going for were going apeshit over this lineup. It really sucks but we knew this was the future after 2016 and now I think it's time to bury any hope of a '11-'14 style lineup coming back. It's done.

I looked at Facebook. There were way more "this is crap" then "this is great." I'll go look again. There are 6700 responses, so I'm not going to compare them all. I'll look at the first 50.
1) Worse and worse every year.
2) Manchester Orchestra, Portugal, Awolnation, CWK :hearts: (she likes some of the mid-card, but I do too)
3) Most generic crap lineup I've ever seen
4) Loves lame
5) Blackbear and Halsey, ZOMG!
6) A trip to Gulf Shores!
7) Too Old to Know any of this
8) RIP Hangout
9) Do promoters even read these posts, because if so they might do something? Worst lineup of any major festival.
10) Real lineup is Wanee
11) Used to be my favorite fest, lineup gets worse and worse
12) Yeah, no thanks.
13) Glad I got to go to the first Hangout
14) Beer sales at an all time low, considering everyone there will be 18 or 19
15) Love the kills; lineup is remarkably dull
16) When 2 guys are pushing buttons as a headliner, festival has jumped the shark
17) Step up your music knowledge if you think this lineup sucks (uh, you fucking suck)
18) Hopefully someone hacked their FB Page and this is a joke
19) Keep reading about attendance going down at fests, and you put out a lineup like this. More rock
20) Huge improvement over last year
21) Negative people; great bands on the lineup (Killers, Portugal, Greta VF, St. Vincent, Manchester) no lineup is perfect
22) This is terrible besides a few people
23) Kinda sucks I just got back from Voodoo and now Kendrick and Killers are headlining his local fest
24) Let's get our puns ready for when Kendrick bails
25) Damn I used to look forward to this lineup every year. It's been a good run, I'm done.
26) NF needs to be a headliner (no he doesn't)
27) I didn't think it was possible to have a worse lineup than last year...
28) What a terrible lineup
29) I've seen half the artist I know on here, but it's fire af.
30) Wow. A whole different vibe from what it was. Out of touch and old.
31) Greta should headline. Only heard of like 1 or 2 others (wtf?)
32) I'm glad I attended the first 4 years, but it has steadily gone downhill
33) Garbaggeeee lineup...
34) You know something is wrong with the world when Chainsmokers are headlining
35) No lineup is perfect, but nothing makes this stand out enough for the money
36) How fucking lame is this lineup? Gotta please the pop princess I guess.
37) I once said I would got to this fest every year...I stopped after 2015 (smart man)
38) I might be a participant for life (based on Oh Wonder)
39) Lineup is worth $50.00 tops.
40) And this is why I switched mostly to Insomniac Festivals
41) This might be the year to return
42) I'm down if you are; sick ass lineup
43) Logic, Zedd, Galantis, Chainsmokers...need I say more OMG!
44) Hating on being banned from the water (in the old days)
45) OMG AJR HELL YEAH I WANNA GO! (based on Odesza)
46) Some of my friends are bout it.
47) I hope you get your security and logistics figured out because last year was terrible
48) Chainsmokers! Killers! AJR! Max! Galantis! Best lineup I've seen so far (you obviously suck balls)
49) OMG can we please go. If only the 1975 were touring it would even be better (dude's name is Kameryn. Yeah, nice job mom)
50) How unfortunate this is across the country as it's both of our music choices wrapped into one. I'm very upset.
So to me, it's 31 negatives out of the first 50 (not counting replies). That's 62%. Maybe on some of the other platforms people were loving it. But I found more hate.
...and most of us complaining just wanted an excuse to go, not the other way around...so damn disappointing.
Guilty. I knew it would never be like 2011, 2014, 2015, or 2012 ever again, but this tanked my rather low expectations.
2017 was fun because all of my Inforoo people were there. I was expecting something on that level for 2018 - a decent enough lineup with high undercard (Main preclosers and Surf closers) I was excited to see... and time with my Inforoo buds on the beach. For that, I was willing to shell out the $$$.
It looks like we have neither the undercard nor the people for 2018. Per texts with Paula last night, she is still in. And that has me slightly on the fence. But I feel like I would be better off selling my ticket, canceling my condo, and walking away from Hangout after 7 consecutive years.

Ya I barely go on Facebook. It was more Twitter and IG. And again I'm talking responses from the younger crowd that they're going for.
I gotcha. I have neither (FaceBook either, but it's easier to view comments when you don't have it). They're seriously going to have to replace liquor sales though which will be in the tank unless mom and dad go along and sit in the restaurant and drink all day belching, chewin' tabacker and downing plate after plate of things that make us obese. There is literally almost no way that anyone over 21 is going to go to this otherwise. I'm not against lineups geared toward the Utes (see Buku). But it's gotta have an edge. Hangout is just corporate.
Oooh. Just got an email saying Datsik is playing here on 1/16. I'll be at that. Edge.

Do it. They kicked sand in your eyes!
They kicked sand in my eyes in 2013. They ran me over with a dump truck for 2018.

buku has more edge then hangout? not seeing it from that phase 1, woof.

C'mon man. Compare any of the previous lineups of the last 2 years when Goldenvoice owned both of them. They both have some crap, but Buku has way more edge than Hangout even with only a small portion of their lineup out. Hangout has some okay mainstream stuff. I already said that. But edge? Kendrick (but he's also the top rapper in the world, so it's relative). St. Vincent, maybe Lil Pump? That's literally it. Buku - Bassnectar, Isaiah Rashad, Sylvan Esso, Smino, Soulection, Jade Cicada so far in a 12 act release. You already know they will bring more chaos.
Or we can go back to 2017. Hangout: Sigur Ros, Ferg, Tchami (not a fan, but whatever), Strand of Oaks maybe. 2016 Big Grams, RTJ, Baauer, Snails and Stick Figure maybe? Buku: 2017 - GrizMatiK, RTJ, Travis Scott, Tycho, Vince Staples, Sunsquabi, Minnesota b2b Space Jesus, Opiuo, Boogie T, Lane 8, Amine. Buku 2016 - Pretty Lights live, Cudi, Future, Kehlani, GRiZ, Baauer, Feed Me, Tchami (again, not a fan, but whatever), What So Not, G Jones, Rae Sremmurd, Ferg, Trippy Turtle b2b Cashmere Cat, Earl Sweatshirt, Mystikal/Juvenile/Fly Boi Keno, Anderson.Paak, Break Science

Last year a lot of the same people said their lineup was crap and they wound up doing pretty great. Personally I think this is an abomination of a lineup. But I am also 30 years old.

It'll sell to 18-25. I'm also 30. I think if I were 23 and have never gone to a music fest, I'd go to this.
I dont remember if it was JUICY JAY or Zaitch, but someone put out a pretty long and detailed mock. I copied it down. The only two out of like thirty picks were Anderson.paak and Odesza. I guess stick to betting on football.

It will sell to the moms, dads, uncles, etc., who want to take their daughters, nieces, kids, etc., to the beach so they can lay by the pool, drink, and eat copious amounts of seafood while they are facilitating a major good time for their loved ones. I am not out of this yet. I really like some of the undercard performers and what an awesome Christmas present for my niece/younger friends. They are really talking this up.

I mean I put Kendrick, The Killers, Chainsmokers, Halsey, and Odesza all in a bunch of mocks. But ya I'm sure they weren't all listed together.
