Who here has seen U2 live before? What tour? I'm a newer fan who got into them through U Talkin' U2 to Me? so I never have, unfortunately.
i saw them on the 360 tour at TCF Bank in MN which is outdoors, absolutely spectacular show. some of the coolest shit i've ever seen. the stage was just massive. while i don't expect anything of that size we will get an awesome visual show for sure
PopMart Tour - 1997 - Vegas - Opening night of the tour, one of my earliest concert experiences. Rage Against the Machine opened and they killed it. The production was massive and you could tell U2 weren't comfortable playing the new material, the only time they've been underwhelming live.
Vertigo Tour - 2005 - Buffalo - It was the 35th anniversary of Lennon's death and weirdly enough, they happened to also be in Buffalo on the day Lennon died 35 years prior. They played Instant Karma and Bono put snippets of Beatles songs in the show all night, it was great.
360 Tour - 2009 - Washington DC - Muse opened the show and played a really good set. Barack and Michelle were in the venue and got a standing ovation when Bono called them out, it was a really fun night.
360 Tour - 2010 - Toronto - Interpol was the opening, act caught the 2nd half of their set and they sounded good. Being on the field for the 360 show was a crazy experience, the stage was so massive and anywhere you stood you felt close to the band.

Their road crew stayed at my hotel on that stop. 100 rooms. Huge. (For reference, when the Zach Brown Band stayed at a different hotel I worked at they had 18.)

I was not aware of the Lennon connections!
From the Buffalo News review:
Another moment during last nights show just before I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Bono referenced a dark moment in Rock History which happened on the same night U2 played their first show in Buffalo, exactly 25 years ago last night. It was an opening gig for Talas at Stage One, a club owned and booked by Buffalo's Harvey and Corky Productions(Partner Harvey Weinstein later went on to form Miramax Films). While playing a video game with Mary Moser, someone came up to them and said that John Lennon had died. The end of one rock era reincarnates to the next, at that moment in Buffalo. Throughout the last nights show John Lennon's spirit was alive with U2 performing Beatles songs Sgt. Pepper, Help, and John Lennon's "Instant Karma".

Cool. Thanks for sharing. And I'm not sure how I didnt' know about Havey Weinstein's involvement in Buffalo's entertainment scene!
I think you meant to say "One could argue" because "I" would never assume or actually say that. The Dead and Elton John are pioneers in iconography and pop culture. Billy Joel is leagues more influential than U2 in just about every respect as far as cultural impact. U2 is really safe white people music. Almost as vanilla as it gets. But theres nothing anyone can do. Im gonna attend that show and try my best to enjoy myself.
Sorry. *A person with a better understanding of pop music history than you could easily argue that U2 have had way more influence on modern music than the Dead, Elton John, or Billy Joel.
I know I'm late to the game, but calling U2 vanilla. That was where the conversation should have at least paused. War - Pop was revolutionary. If one is not aware of that fact, I always cease conversation and tell them to watch a reputable bio, and then listen to a few albums, if not, all those albums.
One could argue, and I would argue, U2 is the most influential band of the last 25 years. Ranging from changing the live game with ZooTV and Popmart, to how many gazillion songs have adopted Edge's signature sound. Not to mention countless bands going on record to praising the band.
Without knowing their history (Bono's mom dying at 14 AT the funeral of his mom's father, being poor, Larry's mom also dying soon after, etc. etc. etc.) and never listening to their music, yeah, I could see why you think that if all your knowledge comes from South Park.
BUT... why would you ever form an opinion without doing your homework. No one ever did that with any other band. Surely there's a reason there the biggest band on the planet.
LOL U2 vanilla. This kid is trip balls when gets to Achtung Baby-Pop.

Not to get too bogged down in a four month old post but:

Twice on the 360 Tour (second night Amsterdam and first night Massachusetts) and then the first night in Boston in 2015. Was on the floor all three times and super close to the stage. A++++

Twice on 360 as well. First was 2009 soldier field in chicago on the field which was amazing. Other time was 2011 in Nashville, up in the stands but smallest venue of entire 3 year tour so still felt strong connection to performance.

I was lucky enough to see U2 in on the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb tour at the former Olympic Stadium in Rome. At that time, I had a friend-of-a-friend that was in charge or arranging passes for U2s VIP guests and got me 2 tickets in the VIP section (great seats, private bar, free drinks, private bathroom). I sat next to the owner of a night club in Buffalo that said he had booked U2 as part of one of their first US tours (I'm guessing that it was the Stage One show above). He told me about the first time that they had booked U2 and how great U2 was to work with and always remembered the people that supported them in the early years. All he had to do was ask and they would provide him with VIP tickets which he had taken them up on at multiple shows/tours.
I would think that big screen will be there but the stage jutting out into the crowd will probably more simplified.
agreed but there's probably a ton more going on there that you can't tell not in the dark that may be left out as well. screen does seem a little large for roo stage but they'll make it work!
Stage is setup at BC Stadium in Vancouver and they're doing full production rehearsals. Some people on Twitter are camped outside the stadium listening to the rehearsals. There's conflicting reports that they're doing Zoo Station now, not sure I believe that one but would surely welcome it.
Recap from the rehearsals...setlist SPOILERS ahead...
Obviously they've soundchecked all of Joshua Tree but they've also done the following:
Miss Saraejvo (possible George Michael tribute) Discoteque Ultraviolet Beautiful Day New Years Day Sunday Bloody Sunday One Love is Blindness (new song) Pride City of Blinding Lights Until The End of the World The Electric Co. Gloria
I doubt they'll play all these songs every night, but it looks like a good selection of songs to pair with the Joshua Tree tracks.

lol wut...all my non-white friends under 50 LOVE billy joel.

That'll work. Gonna be a very crowd pleasing setlist for Roo I would think. Not a ton of deep cuts but JT with some of the heavy hitters from that list will be a great show.
Really hope we get Miss Saraejvo...I know that George Michael covered it so it'll be interesting to see what Bono snippets with it for a tribute, I'd assume Father Figure.
I joined fanclub to get presale tickets on the field but turns out I could have got them easily without joining. Had to wait 4 months to learn what the 2017 gift would be but today it was finally announced and TOTALLY worth it!
I doubt a Roo set goes off without I Will follow, Vertigo, Elevation in tow somewhere. at least 2 of 3. Roo will be hit heavy. Deep cuts will be at a minimum esp if they only give them 90 mins- which will most likely be 120 mins. Unless they go all Jack White and go for close to 3 hours.
May Tycho May Phoenix June Rooo July MMJ and Margo Price August Queen with Adam Lambert August Roger Waters (Bucket list #1) August Spoon and Portugal the man Sept Depeche Mode Sept Pilgrimage Fest

The more I think of it they kinda of have to go longer if they're gonna do JT in full. That's gonna basically take up an hour, plus the encore break, throw in the usual hits of one, sunday bloody sunday, new years day, beautiful day, and pride and that'd be almost the whole show. It won't be crazy by any means but let the kids go to Major Lazer or whatever the fuck is going on, and let U2 go at least another 20 mins or so and get in another 4-5 songs.
