It seems they substituted the "world music" genre (could be added later) for more name recognized acts.
In 7 years I've never, or anyone else in my group of 6-8 has ever been to any of the world music sets. I guess it was cool to have the diversity, but a lot of time we viewed as a waste of a tent.

Or Jay-Z. Or Trombone Shorty. Or Steve Martin. Or Jimmy Cliff. Or Jeff Beck. Or John Prine... John Fogerty... Regina Spektor, Daryl Hall & Chromeo, GWAR, Tori Amos...

Some of the best sets I've seen were world music acts. Amadou and Miriam was great.

I like this lineup better than last year's lineup, especially when you look beyond the headliners. U2 for me, is a super stateside festival get, and I'm also looking forward to seeing The XX, Cage the Elephant, Portugal. the Man, Chance, Umphrey's, Big Gigantic, Car Seat Headrest, Royal Blood, Cold War Kids, The Orwells, The Strumbellas, Greensky Bluegrass, Future Islands and even acts like Lorde, The Weekend and Crystal Castles. ... There were points last year where I just walked around and explored or hung out in the Broo'rs tent because there wasn't anyone playing that interested me. That shouldn't be the case this year.

The line-up with Jay-Z, LCD, John Fogerty, They Might Be Giants, Tenacious D, Dan Deacon, Gwar and Steve Martin?
It's nothing like that line-up.
I was at that Dan Deacon show, though, and while I loved it and, to this day, consider it a magical experience, the This Tent was nowhere near full. My wife and I walked right down and got up close. I've always been curious as to whether those half full tents don't play a role in future bookings. ... It kind of sucks if it does because I dig stuff like Dan Deacon.

If you live in a city with a halfway decent music scene almost none of these acts are particularly exciting
My city (Madison, WI) has a population of 250,000 and almost all of these acts have come through town recently and/or come here repeatedly. I've skipped Cage the Elephant, Cold War Kids, The Orwells, and Big Gigantic more times than I've seen them. I've seen Umphrey's do multi night stands several times. Car Seat Headrest and Royal Blood were just here and they're up-and-coming acts that touring constantly.

In case it wasn't clear from everyone else, but this doesnt speak well of your life choices.

little rock arkansas here. no music scene at all. that's what i love about roo. i can go and see so many great artists i'd normally not get to see and then come home and tell great stories of seeing these bands at roo. it may not mean much now, but my grandkids will be fucking impressed in 40 years! Last year, I didn't know many names initially on the lineup but went and saw 27 artists and had a fucking great time. Sorry for everyone who sees lots of great artists all the time and you're becoming numb to the festival scene bc it's repetitive.

I live in Columbus, another big college town, and we get most touring acts as well. And yes, while I've also seen some of the acts I listed (I've seen Umphrey's 15-plus time, for example) I enjoy being able to go to a camping fest and see old favorites mixed with some new acts over a long weekend alongside my friends, many of whom fly into Tennessee from Cali and NY and other far off locales.
I live in NYC, and I don't see what getting a bunch of great acts together in one spot where you can camp has anything to do with where you live. Unfortunately, this is not a bunch of great acts

Goldfish, CAM, Stick figure are awesome. Never herd of em until 10 hours ago. Now I wanna see them. I think that's how this always worked. Has anyone's heartstrings been ripped out by Michael Kiwanuka yet?

No. I was saying that living in Columbus allows me to see a lot of touring acts. Despite that, what I enjoy about going to festivals is being able to see a bunch of acts - and some of them may be ones I've previously seen - in one place at one time alongside friends. And trust me, I'm not some hippie-dippie-vibes type, so by friends I don't mean the possibly-inarticulate, light-beer swilling strangers camped beside me.

For me, i can't get the time off work to make a longer journey and being closer makes it a whole lot less expensive
