Yea, I don't understand the argument that Bonnaroo is just now booking a lineup that appeals to the younger crowd. I think it makes sense to have someone like The Weeknd close out the fest, while it does suck for people who liked jam and a classic headliner closing out the fest. But I feel like Bonnaroo always had a pretty good nack for grabbing artists who attracted the younger generation. Only difference now is that they are doing it on the cheap and most likely getting package deals with acts like Getter, Borogore, etc.

I would've loved to attend Live Nation's Bonnaroo 1999 fest featuring The Backstreet Boys, Vanilla Ice, Coolio, Jewel, Los del Rio, Ace of Base and more. Would've been perfect for me age group back then.

It is more than speculation. The Tennsseean wrote at least two articles about it in the last week. I'm not making a value judgment and have no agenda to push.
Glad to see I'm not the only one here considering going again next year. Definitely not buying a presale ticket this year but i really only need a slight bump in lineup quality to get me back (or just arcade fire).

I think it's safe to say that great under cards are gone forever. So realistically, I would need a huge set of headliners to get me back. I had a great time this year, but after five Bonnaroos in a row I think I've got everything I can get out of it experience wise.

Yeah I had a great time, DRAM was the only disappointing set I saw. I think had I waited for the lineup drop this year I probably would've skipped and seen U2 here. I will probably wait for the lineup this time around, but if it was my last Roo it was a great one.
I really enjoyed this year and will most likely be back next year. It's really nice when the line up is catered to your age group.
The lineup has always had stuff that catered to young people. Just not the incredibly mainstream young people
They could have booked a lineup of younger, newer bands without making most of those new acts EDM and pop. There is a lot of great rock and roll, uh, music out there. White Reaper, Front Bottoms, and Car Seat Headrest are some good examples from the lineup, but it definitely could have used more
And those bands also cater to a young audience. While The Orwells, CSH, and The Front Bottoms kept me very satisfied, I'd like to see more of those types of bands. Espically since the crowds are always good for those shows.

Last year, I said I was gonna wait for the lineup. Pre-sale time rolled around and I couldn't resist, especially with the tickets $75 cheaper.
Same attitude this year. I'd bet I also break my intention again. This year proved extremely worth the impulse, even with the underwhelming lineup.

seeing future islands at bonnaroo was extremely frustrating for me. i'm a pretty big fan, and thought it was great that the schedule allowed me to get to the front for islands and then stick around for chance. but man, the group of people that i was around during the set made for an overall disappointing experience. everyone was obviously just there for chance, and had no idea who future islands was. and for the entirety of the set they just looked at each other with confusion and refused to show any appreciation for the music. i mean i'm not angry with the crowd, but i don't think bonnaroo did the band justice by putting them in that time slot at that stage.
I was impressed by how the bros and bro hoes were at this. They still talked a lot during some sets (Glass Animals, Chance) but weren't rude or assholes and it was pretty funny to listen to their conversations. I think it's because of the experience of everyone camping and sort of living together as one for 4-5 days compared to the suburban kids that go to city fests like ACL, Lolla, or GovBall that end up going back home or to hotels. Coachella seems to still pull some of the d-bags that are just there for the likes but that could be the difference between being near LA and being the south/southeast. I'll take Roo over Coachella anyway. I'd say the crowd was 75-80% millenial and 20-25% 35+ with rare appearances from 1-16 year olds.

Bad crowds at Coachella are a myth for the most part. That probably has more to do with which sets one attends though. The only bad experience I ever had was with aging ATDI fans. Kids taking pictures or talking while having fun has never bothered me, personally.

I agree with this post on the younger crowd. It was a similar younger age range but with much better vibes than last year.
This was Bonnaroo #10 for me, in a row actually. I had no intention of going based on the lineup drop and how weak last year was.... but then they put out a perfect schedule (for my taste) and a few buddies changed their minds with me. This was definitely my favorite Roo since 2014, possibly back to 2012. They made a LOT of adjustments this year to make up for the shit show that was last year. The perfect weather may have had some to do with that, too.
First off, I was camped in BFE for the 2nd straight year and first times since I've been going. That has to do more with my life situation and getting there on Fri. Anyway, my commute to Centeroo was easily twice as fast. The format changes in camp ground paths back there made a huge difference. It seemed to me they made appropriate adjustments expecting a smaller crowd than the pre-LN era. Also, the electronic bike taxis were more expensive but much more readily available and fun to ride in. They also took us all way out to BFE, which didn't happen last year.
The format in Centeroo was better, too. The sound bleeds were FAR improved. Unfortunately, Which Stage still wasn't loud enough farther back. I couldn't get a much better spot or sound than I used to at That Other Tent, but I did have a MUCH better view of the Other stage and screen than used to. That made a big difference. Just sucked Big G couldn't play all night like he wanted. I will say there was much more activity in the campgrounds than I've seen in the past. The jam band right outside the arch, in the vendor area ended up laying well past sun rise on Fri. I don't know if they did that last year but it will be a draw for me next year.... and I could see them moving into the LockN direction of having an actual stage in the campground eventually. The Portugal CD listening party was pretty cool, too. They had a set up for music that I didn't even go to... I don't even know if that was going LN.
In the moment, I did not notice the sets being much shorter than usual .... I was afraid of that bumming me out based on the schedule. The staggered lineup actually worked out pretty well being Bonnaroo vets and knowing the best routes/spots at shows. We still caught a solid 6-8 hours of music per day with great spots each show.
Portugal. The Man slayed their LN set. I've seen them a few times and nothing compared to that. Best LN show I've seen since Jim James Superjam. I was VERY impressed by Chance The Rapper.... and I was basically dragged to that show by my friends. The headliners, IMO, were by far the biggest let downs. It was hilarious to me how close I was in comparison to past years headliners and how much room I had around me during U2. They had a lot of potential, but every time their songs built up they didn't go anywhere. I do hope the ppl who came for them had fun, though.
I never thought I'd say this even days prior to this Bonnaroo, but I am once again excited like a child for next year's lineup.

Second this. Saw some highly attended sets at Coachella this year (Porteon, Kendrick, Hans, Lorde) and never encountered bad crowds. Your mileage will vary, but its reputation for bad crowds is drastically exaggerated.

I attended 'Roo in 2013, 2014 and 2016; skipped out this year for various reasons. I never thought I'd miss it so much this year, but I was there in spirit. I did watch some of the performances on Red Bull TV, and many did stand out like Tove Lo and Cage. I am enjoying reading everyone's posts whether on here, reddit and social media about their 2017 experience. Sounds like everyone had a great time.
I'm a regular reader of the Lefsetz Letter (music industry guy), and I did get some perspective from that guy's post. I'm not sure if Livenation is the true winner here. I love Bono and U2, but I would have loved to see Bono's reaction to the crowd as stated. As far as Bonnaroo, I've always complained about the shrinking presence of bands/artists that were active in the 20th century, but it is what it is. Some things are meant to change, for the good or the bad. I remember in 2013, you still had Paul McCartney, ZZ Top, Billy Idol, Weird Al and R. Kelly, most of them before my generation. Last year, there was the Dead & Co., Pearl Jam, Ween, Cymande and Third Eye Blind representing the "20th century group" at Bonnaroo. This year there was only U2, the RHCP, the PHJB and Ajgelique Kidjo. (If I left anyone out, I apologize) Classic rockers have their own festival now. Don't expect Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles making an appearance on the What Stage anytime soon. Bonnaroo will always have the vibe, the spicy pie, the big ass donuts, hi-fives, etc.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Waited for the lorde pit and had an amazing time. Easily my second favorite set behind PtM. I'll get to a full "review" after I get some sleep. Had a great time though.
I was in the Lorde pit too and those were my top two shows as well! When Lorde had technical difficulties at first I was so stressed haha I thought she was gonna get cut short since it was Sunday, I'm so glad they let her have her full performance
Edit- so as to not double post-
I had a great time this year! I saw some amazing sets- Portugal, Lorde, Flume, Umphrey's LN, The xx, Glass Animals, Rezz, Milky Chance, Tegan & Sara, Car Seat Headrest, Noname, and all the headliners were pretty fantastic! I missed a couple that I realllly wanted to see, instead of Future Islands I had to find some food and gold bond or else I wouldn't have continued on Saturday haha. I thought Chance was pretty disappointing, I guess I shouldn't have had the bar so high for him in my mind but damn, the set was pretty boring and he didn't even rap most of the words to any song which is a huge pet peeve of mine with rappers. If Nicki Minaj can make it through an entire song without the crowd doing the words for her... Chance the Rapper should be able to as well. ijs lol. And the whole "put your hands up if you love God!!" made me roll my eyes into the back of my head, but I know that's his thing and I can respect that for a good performance... but he didn't deliver that, imo he was just okay. I ended up missing Cage the Elephant as well which bummed me out because I kept hearing great things about them. The only truly terrible set I saw was Innanet James.... that was a very big "yikes" moment. I've only been the past 3 years, my ranking would be '16>'17>'15
And the whole "put your hands up if you love God!!" made me roll my eyes into the back of my head
Ya, that would get a world class eye roll from me as well. I really hope he moves past this gospel rap phase.
I agree, because he really is a truly skilled rapper! I blame Kanye (even though I do enjoy him too, but after Chance did Ultralight Beam it seemed like he just dove headfirst into the gospel rap stuff).

Even as an atheist, I didn't give a shit. I like his music, and I can respect that if that's what keeps him going and influences his music, he works it in to his sets. If the music sounds good I'm gonna jig to it.
I'll eye roll it when he brings it up, but not anymore so than I eye roll the political mess at shows. As a matter of fact I'd rather the jesus stuff worked in somewhere than the political stuff. At least I don't have to hear about Jesus at every other show I go to.

"put your hands up if you love God!!"
I believe it was "put your hands up if you want to go to heaven!" which was a little more awkward. I remember me and my two other friends looking at each other awkwardly while it seemed like everyone else was going along with it in the pit section. I yelled back "we're already here!" and "heaven is on Earth!" like in that moment I was going to have a philosophical discussion with Chance the Rapper in the middle of his show. But honestly, it didn't bother me like it did other people. I love it when artists express themselves and as long as they're not preaching hate I can't be mad when they talk about something I don't believe in.

Exact thoughts - by all means, as long as it's not negative, feel free to express your art in whichever way is most meaningful to you.
Also, he did give a heads up before, and after saying it he acknowledged that he might've annoyed/offended some people - but he was still unapologetic about it which was kinda cool imo. He was sincere about what he was about.

I also find it funny how people were annoyed at him pointing the mic at the crowd too much. As someone who was almost on the rail I felt guilty anytime I couldn't finish the lyrics. Like I was the one letting him down.

Hahahahaha yeah I was/am the same way. I think that pointing the mic at the crowd works more for smaller crowds, and that's why it translated well to those who were in the pit/closer. But when you have a huge festival field that you're performing to, people in the back may struggle to get into it when you're doing that.
Kendrick had the same issue when he first started playing fests. By the time he played Roo in 2015, though, he was pretty good at rapping all of his lines (if I remember correctly). But I think he might've just started doing that more in general. Idk.
