Most Mexican places in Houston are good. Just don't go to Cadillac Bar.
El Rey is a great fast food Cuban-Mexican place on Washington Ave. Good fish tacos, and I also love the Cuban taco (chicken or steak, get steak, black beans, diced plantains, and sour cream). They're also open late, til at least three in the morning on weekends.
If you want to go high-end and authentic as all hell, go with Hugo's on Westheimer. It's not Tex-Mex, but more traditional Mexican food, so if you have a big boner for authenticity and cultural exploration, that's your move. I cannot stress that enough.
Then there are the somewhat-overpriced and possibly-whitewashed joints like El Tiempo and Pappasito's. I love those too. Sue me. Cyclone Anaya's is also a good fajitas-and-ritas type place. Oh, and then there's Ninfa's. Ninfa's is the one everyone goes to when they visit. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Their frozen margaritas will fuck you up. They will cut you off after your third no matter what. If you're up late, drunk, and not so concerned about quality, La Tapatia and Chapultapec are open til like 5 AM.
As far as some of my favorite casual non-Tex-Mex places, Fat Bao puts a cool twist on pork belly buns, I used to eat Khun Kay Thai twice a week when I lived nearby, and BB's is some solid cajun food. Again, the one at Montrose and Westheimer is open 24 hours.
Unfortunately, outside of Pappasito's and Cyclone, I don't know if any of those have locations downtown. Many of the best restaurants, like Hugo's and Underbelly(!), are in the Montrose neighborhood. It's not super far to Uber, but you're not gonna walk there.

This is great!! Thank you, Pablo !!
Same question, but replace Food w/ Cocktails.....
I'm coming in from Austin......never been to Houston.
If I'm a "Where's the best drinks " guy, what is the list???
If you're trying to get cocktails, go to Anvil. It's the crown jewel of Houston craft cocktails. They have a Beard Award-caliber bar program. Their cocktail list includes one hundred classics. The training alone to work there lasts like six months, and you have to be able to identify fifty spirits from look, smell and taste alone. They have six different kinds of ice. They take "mixology" to extreme measures. I dabbled in the field, and they are the cream of Houston and quite possibly just about anywhere.
I'm pretty sure Anvil has something to do with Underbelly. Similar ownership and such. (I'm not fact-checking any of this. Much of it could be completely wrong.) I mentioned Underbelly before. You may have heard of it. It's pretty much at the top of Houston restaurants the way Anvil is for bars, but it's a restaurant so it's much more famous. I don't really want to talk about Underbelly because it is already so huge (and I just name-checked it four times) but it has a really cool adjacent bar called The Hay Merchant which is one of those drafthouse-style places that has a whole wall of taps. They must have a hundred or so beers on tap, most of it is local and independently brewed, if not all. They also share a kitchen with Underbelly, by the way, the de-facto best restaurant in Houston for the last five to ten years.
Again, my knowledge of downtown and the surrounding areas falls short. Both Anvil and Hay Merchant are in the Montrose area. Midtown is reasonably close to downtown, and it's where many yuppies go to party. I would advise against that. If you're going to Day for Night, it's not your scene. There is a really great spot downtown, though, called The Honeymoon Cafe. They're a coffee bar/real bar/cocktail bar downtown whose staff is dope as hell. They would play Currents straight through and LCD Soundsystem when I asked them to. Great food there too. There's also another beer/wall-of-taps type of place called the Flying Saucer that has great pretzels and probably other stuff besides pretzels.
If you want to Uber for a short bit and get blitzed out of your skull, go to Lei Low. It's a tiki bar, a semi-hidden gem. Mai tais on draft. But please get a safe ride home.
If you want to go high-end and authentic as all hell, go with Hugo's on Westheimer. It's not Tex-Mex, but more traditional Mexican food, so if you have a big boner for authenticity and cultural exploration, that's your move. I cannot stress that enough.
I made this mock schedule. Put it on reddit. Already got some comments and criticisms from there but I haven't had the chance to update it yet. Will do so this weekend.
Are any of the art installations one-time-only events that could conflict with music sets?
Well, you had to get an appointment scheduled for Bjork VR, but you could choose what time and work it into your schedule.
That is, if the Eventbrite sign-up page didn't ho you like it did me and some other people I know. Man, I was pissed about that. That is one thing that wasn't awesome about Day for Night last year.

Pwnd. And I'll spare you from further nose-rubbing.
Fozzie,
Last year, every artist did at least 1 "Live" show of their works. I didn't go to any of them besides the exclusive Bjork VR thing but she wasn't at that. You just walked through rooms and did the VR thing in each room. Write-up is in last year's thread. But all the other artists had specific times they did live shows of their light art. Whether it was with music or a lecture or general talk about what they were portraying with the specific installation, I don't know. My music schedule was too full except a couple of early chances I had on Sunday to walk around and see everything. Last year they didn't do an app, but the stage and art schedules were configured well enough for mobile. If there is a specific light artist you want to see perform their live show, you'll just have to show up at the right time on the light-artist schedule. My understanding from some of the people who went to various ones last year was that it was pretty cool to get the background information to help mortals like us understand some of the deeper aspects. <--- hopefully that all makes sense. If not, in addition to a music schedule, they also run a art schedule.

of Montreal vs. JLin and Thom vs. Godspeed would be harsh, but overall the schedule could be a lot worse in reality. I don't really see Venetian Snares and Lanois playing unopposed closing the Blue, but I'd definitely take it.

I am all excited for this fest....
But putting Justice against Pretty Lights would make me not go......
I would expect Pretty Lights to be up against something more in the vein of Blake, Jamie, or Mount Kimbie. There are too many acts to not expect some real conflicts, but there's still enough diversity here to keep everyone busy. Personally, I had planned to skip PL. Justice is for everyone though.
edit: that schedule would actually work fine if you just switched Nina Kraviz and Pretty Lights. They both make more sense on those stages anyways. Jamie closing the blue one night is totally the way to go - like Arca last year.

I like Justice, but the last set I watched a couple weeks ago was musically boring. I also don't like Nina Kraviz, so if she's closing the blue stage one of the days, I'll maybe go by there for 10 minutes. People who enjoy what she does can be there. Hopefully Justice would be one of the blue stage closers even though I'm sure the set won't be appreciably different from 2 weeks ago.
Finch,
No way is a Pretty Lights vs. Justice conflict a reason not to go. PL almost always live streams his shows anyway so nothing is rare with him/them. The shows are all different - but not completely different. PL might be a Top 10 set for me, but it's not the reason I'm going by a long shot. I look at it more as a bonus set of musicians I happen to like improv'ing and jamming. It will be fun, but it's not a deterministic set. The festival itself is what is deterministic.
Not sure if you are basing Justice on a livestream or not, but I wouldn't skip them if that's the case. They really come alive and will be one of the high points for sure. That said, I don't think their production would permit them playing anywhere other than the main stage. The really seem like a lock to close it one night.

It was like a pop disco set. I've seen them before in person and probably watched 3 streams this year. I enjoyed the Coachella set, and it was the only set I liked at Ultra (even Cypress Hill sucked playing to that crowd). But this last show wasn't for me. I can't remember the festival it was at, but it just seemed wimpy for what they usually do.

Sounds like a DJ set, which they apparently aren't the best at performing. This will be the live show, the same show from Coachella and Ultra, which is phenomenal.
Yeah, that will be him DJ'ing rather than with the live band. My preference is live band, but I've seen him solo twice in the last 7 months, and both shows were pretty great anyway. I guess it will depend on how f'd up he is.
So far, Red Bull TV hasn't posted the schedule for their ACL Festival Stream. Coverage begins at 2:00pm on 3 channels. I figured it would be out tonight, but I'm not leaving for Austin until tomorrow night and am working tomorrow anyway. So as long as it comes in before late tomorrow, I'll post the "anticipated" schedule here and on the webcast thread in the root directory.
