Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
The problem mostly lies in Fozzie's last point and the word 'unique' and the part where livenation is soulless and plastic and I could have seen 311 at my local livenation amphitheater.
Live Nation really is the McDonalds of music festival organizers.
I also think I basically have a list of 15 top 6 acts, but ya know, whatcha gonna do. If I'm booking my own top 15 acts that'd get me back to $400 ticket expenses and 5 days in the summer Tennessee heat, then this is what I'm going to need.
Additionally on a line up with all the names I listed I just think the 5 people I put ahead of him would be billed higher. I don't see how any of those top 5 would be billed under Chance. Take away the number he falls at on my list and just look at names, do you really think Chance would be billed over ATCQ reunion or Missy Elliott? For personal tastes I'd put him over Björk or Bon Iver, but I also know that if the three of them were on a line up Chance would be after both of them, so that is where I put him. I actually don't even like Björk or Bon Iver that much, but I put them on there as a more unique get (Björk) and someone who would move tickets (as I believe the assumption is that Bon Iver moves tickets, at least that seems to be the consensus 'round these parts-- although I know that Inforoo is hardly the typical festival goer.)
Continue booking a legacy headliner as #1. Get Roger Waters, The Who, someone.
Get relevant or lauded hip-hop acts or bands for the other headliner slots. 2018 candidates presumably include Gorillaz, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, etc.
Mix the top few lines with good touring options and unique stuff, i.e. see Roo's 2014 top lines.
Book some commercial EDM, but scratch the garbage and take a page out of the Coachella, III Points, Day for Night books and book interesting, wonderful electronic acts.
Take the same approach to lower-level bands and rappers. Don't hound the Spotify trending charts for whoever is popping off a certain week, find bands that have an album or a few EPs that seem destined for greatness.
Make Thursdays great again.
Stop booking the same shit at the Silent Disco and Christmas Barn and find cheap, great DJs (see Okeechobee's Jungle 51 for reference).
Have late nights go for as long as the artists like.
Don't pad the time between sets on the same stages.
Get out-there, unique stuff like Atomic Bomb.
This is a much better response than just reading a bunch of mock lineups that'll end up being very inaccurate.
Unfortunately Livenation isn't exactly known for booking unique acts so I don't see a major turn around happening in the near future. If there was a year to "fix" Bonnaroo it was this year. Just let it rest in peace. Or if my Star Wars/Bonnaroo theory continues to hold true, next year won't be as bad. 2013: A New Hope 2014: Empire Strikes Back 2015: Return of the Jedi (not as good as the previous two, but still not bad) 2016: Phantom Menace (holy shit this is shockingly bad) 2017: Attack of the Clones (just when you thought it couldn't get any worse...) 2018: Revenge of the Sith? (maybe not as appalling as the previous two, but still not great)

Whoa whoa whoa mcdonalds is good don't insult them like that.

Wrong. Chance would be billed above all of the artists you named. None of those are top 3 at a major fest, Chance will be from now on.

ive always liked attack of the clones more than phantom menace, and i dont think revenge of the sith gets enough credit. remove some cheesy dialogue and get someone better than Hayden Chritiansan and i think its actually a really well told story/finale.

Attack of the Clones is a pretty shitty movie with a relatively cool giant battle at the end. Bonnaroo 2017 is a pretty shitty lineup but with some big enough headliners to keep it from being a total disaster.

ya the lowest point of it would be the forced relationship between anakin and padme (i dont like sand) which can be identified as borgore i guess. but nothing angers me more than the mass poop and fart jokes which i guess can be identified as macklemore?

Chance the Rapper will never be billed that low at a festival again. He's #1 at Lollapalooza ahead of The Killers, Muse, and Arcade Fire. I know that's his hometown but that counts for something. He's not billed any lower than #4 at any other festival. Chance is already billed ahead of Bon Iver at Boston Calling and I think yes Chance would definitely be billed over ATCQ and Missy Elliot. Chance is basically now in the league of J.Cole and Kendrick Lamar when it comes to festivals. Also, wouldn't it just be weird to have Chance be #4 this year and then bring him back lowered on the lineup next year?
I remember a lot of people last year denying that he'd have the Kendrick/J.Cole spot at Bonnaroo, and now look where we're at.

Phantom Menace was pretty awful and badly put together (like Bonnaroo's 2016 lineup). It was also shocking how bad it was when it came out. But Phantom Menace did have some undeniably great things like Jon William's score or the casting of Ewan Mcgregor to play Obi Wan. That's like the LCD Soundsystem and Tame Impala.

2017 and Clones are each better than 2016 and Phantom Menace. Also, does this mean everyone will pretend 2019 (Rogue One) is amazing but it's actually pretty whatever? I guess a good parallel would be if like Radiohead played on Sunday (the Vader stuff at the end).

also 2019 would be Force Awakens, which was also great, and nostalgic. so maybe that year is the return of Jam?
Ah, you're right. I really liked Force Awakens, man. More than most people, I guess. It kinda had to grow on me, though. Saw it four times in the theater. Maybe it would just be a return to a great lineup. Force Awakens was basically just a remake of A New Hope, so give me a lineup like 2013. Swap McCartney for Waters this time.

2019 will be Force Awakens (when they try to please the old fans), 2020 will be Rogue One (acceptable enough with some cool shit at the end)
oh and Donald Glover will headline 2022 (cuz that's the Han Solo movie)

I, for one, do. It might be taking place on a much smaller scale by then, ie Donald Glover headlining and not U2 and the Weeknd.
Donald Glover will be legendary by this time
Childish Gambino is never going to be as big as the Weeknd is now. U2 is one of the biggest bands ever. Live revenue-wise, they may never be supplanted, once they're through. As big as Gambino may become, he will never be the get that those two acts are this year. Chance has been around a decent bit less time than Bino, and is already the top name on Lolla's poster. If Gambino was going to do that, he would have by now.

Chance has home field advantage at Lolla which...distorts the billing a bit.

Fully agree. It's absurd on some level that Chance is the #1. However, he is a straight up phenomenon. He's winning Grammys, he's considered a visionary for his mixtape/independent path, he's stealing the show on Kanye albums and SNL appearances, and he's earlier in his career than Gambino. I'm not even particularly a fan. In fact, Gambino is more my style given his new direction.
I wouldn't even consider Chance a Roo headliner at #4, but he's inarguably bigger than Gambino. Do you dispute that, or do you want to just pick apart one aspect of my argument? Do you think Gambino will one day surpass Chance in popularity? Would you go so far as to say that?
Regardless, Gambino is not as big as any of the top three names on the Bonnaroo lineup this year, and he never will be. If he headlines Bonnaroo, he either underwent a shocking increase in popularity, or Bonnaroo declined to that point.

I mean I was sort of kidding about how big he'll be. But he definitely hasn't hit the prime of his career yet. He's going to be playing Lando Calrissian and Simba, he's got a critically acclaimed tv show, and he just released debatably the best album in his career. I just wouldn't doubt the things that guy can accomplish.

I'm not arguing against your initial comment. I understand the Star Wars parallel is a goof.
Glover's big time for sure, but he's not Will Smith. The Han Solo movie isn't about Lando, and you won't see his face in that Lion King remake. Glover would've been a great Spider-Man, but it didn't happen. Atlanta is a hot show, absolutely. I think he's super talented, but if he was going to be a headliner, he would be by now. If you're going to headline a mega-festival (which Bonnaroo still is. As of right now, anyway.) you need songs that the average person knows. Gambino doesn't. He doesn't have a single huge breakthrough track, really. He doesn't have the name recognition, either.
I could absolutely be proven wrong and Gambino could be a headliner one day. No one would have thought LCD would headline just a few years ago. But I am pretty confident Gambino will never be as massive as the Weeknd is right now. The Weeknd is huge. The Weeknd is the biggest male pop star since Justin Timberlake. He's working with Daft Punk and charting whole albums on the Billboard singles chart and somehow he is billed third (not second) at Bonnaroo this year. And it sounds like he balked at playing Lolla essentially because he would have been billed below Chance (I don't blame him), something Glover is comfortable with at Gov's.
