Are chainsmokers really all that different from the other mainstream rock/EDM acts flooding fests? There's plenty of cheese at the moment.

exactly. they're becoming more of a joke and less of your average shit edm every day. shit like EDC will still book them but i think coachella has more integrity than that.

DJ Khaled is a known joke. He was booked because of his snapchats and crazy personality. chainsmokers would be booked for their music, which is what is becoming a meme at this point.

They literally began as a meme. The Chainsmokers are still huge. If they book them next year they will have one of the biggest crowds of the weekend, if not THE biggest. They wouldn't be booked for their music, they'd be booked for kids to take drugs to.

I don't have a taek about whether Coachella has the "integrity" to not book Chainsmokers, but I think critical opinion is targeting them in a way other cheese EDM hasn't been, and DJ Khaled being in on his own joke counts for something.

Maybe they are just as bad as other mainstream EDM acts flooding fests, but they've become the scapegoat for the sins of EDM that have piled up over the past few years, and critics are taking intense delight in tearing them apart.

im not saying its impossible, and they would obviously have the biggest crowd of the weekend, unless they were against beyonce or some shit. rn im just betting it doesnt happen.
I don't know what would stop them from booking the Chainsmokers again when they booked every other cheese EDM up until now. If you look at the recent history of the festival, they don't really book EDM above the 3 spot on a certain day. My guess is Chainsmokers would fit there. At this point, I'm not sure what electronic act could go and be higher than 3 outside of a SHM reunion or an Avicii comeback.
Not on that scale, though. Galantis, Porteon, Steve Angello, Garrix, etc. did their usual. Khaled apparently teased a set full of special guests, barely delivered, and had a DJ, barely playing his own songs and leaving his set early.

I know but it's not like The Chainsmokers would be any different than Galantis, Porteon, Steve Angello, Garrix, etc. which was my original point.

Second line EDM like Porter and DJ Snake is is much easier to digest when paired with Bon Iver, Lorde, New Order, Justice, etc.. This festival makes it much easier to deal with acts like the chainsmokers imo.

Coachella can get away with booking the Chainsmokers I mean who are we kidding? They had Calvin fucking Harris as a headliner last year. The Chainsmokers on the second line isn't hurting their image or pissing off anyone going. I do agree that people are starting to have that "Wait... WTF is this" moment with The Chainsmokers, but not enough so to put a significant dent into their runaway train of popularity. It'd be great if the Chainsmokers were the straw that broke the camels back when it comes to cheese EDM, but I'm not sure we are quite there yet. We need something completely ridiculous. I mean we literally have a DJ just put on a marshmallow hat and all the sudden is now one of hottest names in the genre.

EDM is a fickle genre in general. Those names come and go. The Afrojack's of 2011 are just Porter in 2017. It's all interchangeable shit GV can cash in on anytime. It's obvious they need to cash in on Chainsmokers before it's too late and it won't hurt their image at all.
