Coachella has booked Chainsmokers before and they will do it again.
chainsmokers image has chained drastically since last time they played
It sure has. They've played SNL since then. I know I was on your side like a week ago, but I've changed my stance. I don't think the Chainsmokers are going anywhere anytime soon.
We live in a pretty small bubble on this board, where Moderat is the greatest thing that exists and Justice qualify as mainstream. In the real world, acts like Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber and yes, the Chainsmokers, are huge. The Chainsmokers are also probably safer to book than the other two because of genre. Is there an EDM act GV wouldn't book?
I think what you're describing is probably coming, but I'm not sure we're there yet.
I don't see a Rilo Kiley reunion happening. Also St. Vincent and Haim should both be higher, I agree with tЯist♡n that it needs more Grizzly Bear, and who the fuck is Dog Pound?
Coachella can get away with booking the Chainsmokers I mean who are we kidding? They had Calvin fucking Harris as a headliner last year. The Chainsmokers on the second line isn't hurting their image or pissing off anyone going. I do agree that people are starting to have that "Wait... WTF is this" moment with The Chainsmokers, but not enough so to put a significant dent into their runaway train of popularity. It'd be great if the Chainsmokers were the straw that broke the camels back when it comes to cheese EDM, but I'm not sure we are quite there yet. We need something completely ridiculous. I mean we literally have a DJ just put on a marshmallow hat and all the sudden is now one of hottest names in the genre.
I'm not saying Coachella won't book The Chainsmokers. But I don't think its fair to lump Calvin Harris in with them. 18 Months is a good record.
Chainsmokers are an interesting case study. My guess is GV passes for the following reasons: 1. Live Nation supported arena tour this year 2. being in album no-man's-land next year 3. complete critical schlacking they are taking 4. not being booked by Lolla or 'Roo or Hard suggests maybe their asking is enormous
Wouldn't be shocked if it happens, but I think they're unlikely for next year with many other sunset main electronic options - Kygo, Odesza, three years since Kaskade, Maus/Prydz, etc.
4. not being booked by Lolla or 'Roo or Hard suggests maybe their asking is enormous
Well they played Roo just last year right after Coachella and played Lollapalooza Brazil this year. No artist is too expensive for the promoter that put on Desert Trip and booked Beyonce for Coachella. I don't think this particular point is valid at all.
We also don't know if they'll have a new album or if anyone who likes them even cares whether they do. They could easily just put out a few singles and remain perfectly relevant to their fans.

They just released an album a month ago
OK then all the more reason why that album point was weird.
My point is they released an album this year, so if GV wanted to book them, it would make sense to do the '14 to '15 Disclosure back to back and get them debuting some new material now.
Instead, their next album - I'd guess - will probably be 18-24 months from now, meaning they'll have a one-year old album (that everyone thinks sucks) next year and GV will probably have their choice of other bright, shiny EDM thing for the kiddies that won't demand a fat payment and take up a sub spot.
OK then all the more reason why that album point was weird.
I was referring to "album no man's land" which made it seem like they didn't have new material (I don't follow the album cycles of Chainsmokers but I guess the SNL app should have made it clear to me they'd released one). "Album no man's land" pretty aptly describes the 2017 Beyonce booking. Lemonade was released during weekend 2 of Coachella 2016. There's no reason to think a year is too long after their most recent album.

Didn't they just have Capital Cities again? How did acts like Edward Sharpe avoid your no-man's land argument?

Edward Sharpe released an album on Friday 2 days before they played weekend 1 last year, like Kendrick this year.

Yeah and it fail onto deaf ears. My point was if they're willing to book Edward Sharpe after two lackluster albums (new music or not), they're probably willing to go after a sure thing like The Chainsmokers. If people here still spend money on shit like 21 Pilots, there's a good chance there's still a market for them as well.

You guys realize Calvin Harris headlined with an album well over a year old, right? So did Muse. It's not really a big deal, especially with EDM since EDM artists still commonly release singles afterwards.

Edward Sharpe had just released an album.
For Capital Cities, you do understand theirs a difference between 3rd/4th line tent act and a sub-headliner who would more than likely play the main stage?
For an act that literally only matters when they have a big single in that moment, they better keep pushing out big singles after this album flop - and that's a risk I'm not sure GV will take on a sub-headliner after this last record.

Well I think this argument was more in the vein of The Chainsmokers are too critically scarred by their last output to play this fest at this point.

Well I don't necessarily feel like they'd be a hands down sub first of all anyways. I see them more as a 3 or 4, but that's beside the point.
DJ Snake was #4 this year. Garrixx and Porter were #5. They're not beneath going all in on some bullshit. The Chainsmokers still have a chance here.
True, I'm certainly leaving the door open for it to happen and would not be shocked at all if it does. Just saying if they have plenty of garbage to choose from, they might avoid the one at the bottom of the heap that was aligned with a competitor this year for a lucrative arena tour.
If anyone is trying to book for next year for 1-4 people, and wants a great place, the airbnb I stayed at this year was flipping awesome and only charged $150 a night. They rent out 2 private bedrooms, the hosts are old NYC hippies who are 420 friendly, have a great pool and hot tub, the wife cooks you a giant breakfast every morning, and also will drive you to the shuttle stop for no charge. They are the friendliest people, and it's only a 10 minute drive from the grounds. 1 of the bedrooms (the one I rented) also has a private entrance and relaxing patio with lemon trees.
I want you guys to have first dibs on this place as it's really a hidden gem, PM me for the link if you're interested.

You're not going to use it again?
My budget is going to be higher next year, so I'm looking at renting a house instead, I will probably go visit the hosts while I'm in town though, we bonded pretty well and I really liked them.

Just realized I have enough SPG points to book one of two Starwood properties right on the shuttle line. Siiiiiiick.
Ugh, jealous that I'm not gonna have hotel points to book my stay next year.
When I checked in at my hotel this year, the guy took my ID then his jaw dropped. "Holy shit man, what a great way to spend your Wyndham points! I dont even need to hold a credit card, your rate is $0." Then he looked up what it would have been and said I saved $1,600.

Which one? I've stayed at the Riviera in downtown Palm Springs and Westin Mission Hills in Palm Desert for Coachella. IIRC, both are 10k points and right by shuttles. Both are good and I would do either again, and would be the route I'd go for sure if I wasn't trying to do a house again.
-Westin is around 20-25 min shuttle, Riv about 40-45 min shuttle -Riv is more of a party atmosphere with two huge pulls and partying, Westin has a nice pool area but is much quieter and not much of a party scene -Westin probably has nicer rooms but they are more standard hotel rooms while Riv has the "classic Palm Springs" room feel -Riv has a lot of stuff walking distance for brunch/grocery options, IIRC Westin not so much -Both were fairly lax with security and/or enforcement of pool rules, etc. -Pitchfork was doing a live Pitchfork radio event at the Riv when I stayed there in 2016 from the pool. I was too chicken to say anything, but was chilling right by the guys from Deafheaven, BADBADNOTGOOD, etc. as they were getting interviewed
Like I said both solid options, and tremendous use of points when they'd be ~$1,500 for the weekend probably

Yep, those are the two! I'm torn as they both have their pros and cons. Do you know if either of them have breakfast? I'm a gold member and get free breakfast so that'd be nice. I eat lunch and dinner at the fest, but a little nervous about the Westin not being around much. Buuut...the shorter shuttle ride sounds nice.
