“Beyond that reunion, the emotional climax—a jarring one, given the content and tenor of the material he joked was better than his current work—was Em’s announcement that this week will mark 10 years of sobriety. He was met with enthusiastic cheers, which seemed to move him after an hour-plus of inscrutability. Riding that goodwill, he launched into his closing song, “Not Afraid,” a mawkish self-help single from 2010’s Recovery.“
I think Cardi B drew the biggest crowd of the weekend. Didn’t see that coming.
lol ya right.
Not joking. I had a similar view for both Beyoncé and Cardi B and Cardi’s crowd looked bigger. I went back to the campsite before Beyoncé started and there were A LOT of people leaving.

What time did you get to Beyonce and what kind of spot were you able to get? My plan was to push forward towards the end of HAIM assuming it was the only way I would get anywhere close.

You'd have to think after the enormity of the show and the positive press it's getting, that if there are at least nearly as many people at Weekend 2 (and I'd have no idea if that's right or not), it would probably be more packed.

I bounced around during Beyoncé but I also watched both sets from the beer garden on the left.
I don’t think you’ll get close if you start after HAIM, you’ll have to start way earlier due to a ton of people camping out.

How was the beer garden during Bey. Is it a decent enough spot to take it all in without all the craziness.

If I were to guess, I'm thinking the 11:30pm start time and the long day in the beating sun probably drained a lot of people. Cardi had a prime time slot.

I read something on reddit of a dude who get their when Tyler ended and he ended up a few rows behind Beyonce's catwalk.
Just got back to my apartment, amazing weekend. This year super exceeded my expectations.
I'll post longer thoughts later, but a couple scattered thoughts before I put my head down in a couple hours of catch up work then probably pass out super early:
-Outdoor Theater fucking rules. Was super easy to get great spots, sets were all excellent, crowds were very good. Absolutely zero "Jack U fans waiting through Sufjan" type stuff this year. (I'm speaking specifically Outdoor - there was a lot of main camping) St. Vincent, War on Drugs, David Byrne, A Perfect Circle Miguel, wowow, just great
-Soulwax into Jamiroquai was out of this world, that was something else
-Sonora tent is like a cheat code. Amazing sets from up and coming acts, and you're almost always 2 feet from the stage. I was front and center for Priests, Cherry Glazerr, and John Maus - all excellent and all super easy to get into
-Ton of people. Wouldn't be shocked if it got over 125k this year. I've never been to Glastonbury and will probably get hit up with a ton of #Actuallys from people who've been there, but it felt Glasto size this year. Crowds don't bother me a ton and drink and bathroom lines were still short/non-existent, so that made it manageable. Only minor disappointment was that the lines inside Indio Central Market were enormous anytime between like 5 and 9 PM, so it was almost impossible to enjoy any of the food in there for dinner unless you wanted to sacrifice an hour
-Fozzie - sorry a meet up never happened, my cell service was super weak in the fest and rolled in more like 3:30ish each day which was a little bit later than I expected. Next year!

I walked at a medium pace from St. Vincent (ended 9:50 PM) to Soulwax (started 10:00 PM) and got a spot about 1/3 of the way through the tent by about 9:56 or 9:57. My guess is it was 2/3 full. Easy to get close using the side entrance on the Mojave vs. going in through the back
Honestly feel like he wrote that before the festival and filled in a couple details later. Sure, St. Vincent isn't going to draw the same as the Migos. That's true of literally any festival in America. But the sets still rocked and the crowds were super engaged - honestly don't know exactly what he was seeing. Crowds lost it for the Talking Heads songs in Byrne's set. Also:
1. Maybe the most packed afternoon (pre 6 PM) set of the weekend was Greta Van Fleet. You can't just ignore any rock that doesn't fit the indie genre in some form. 2. This is nothing new. The Stone Roses played to like 200 people in 2013, The Replacements played to a super small crowd in 2014, St. Vincent and Ryan Adams played to super small crowds in 2015, etc. etc. Same complaint, different year.
I don't really understand his conclusion. Does he want them booking no rock acts? Should they have not booked A Perfect Circle because 50,000 people weren't there even though it was a perfect alternative for people like me who didn't want to go to Migos?
This is actually getting me excited to see what they do next year. PT definitely acknowledged the "no rock this year" crowds (even though - as the writer recognizes - you got prestige spots from APC, St. V, WoD, Byrne, etc.) so I wonder if he tries to over-compensate rock next year.
Is rock dead at FYF because Future is probably going to draw 4x the crowd of My Bloody Valentine?
They were pushing the Rock is not dead thing in the live stream hardcore. I would normally say it’s on the decline but my top 3 albums of the year are rock so maybe we are seeing a turn for the better. It’s kinda bogged down by sonic conservatism and people being told growing up being told by their parents that only rock music is good. But like I said, artists like Jack White, The Voidz, and MGMT are doing fantastic things

I think the bigger point is that the rock highlights are fresh acts at the bottom of the poster (eg Sonora tent) rather than old timers at the top, which is not necessarily a bad thing. No reason to bring back repeat 2-3 line indie rock acts just to satisfy the guitar music dead enders.

Great weekend once again. Really love the addition of the indio market. The fuku chicken strips and frozen strawberry lemonade were awesome. As for the sets my favorites were Beyonce, Miguel, Bleachers, David Byrne and Jamiroquai.
