it seems like Boston Calling is aiming for acts that aren't simply good, but iconic and well-known across many demographics, in the headlining positions now.
Tool were #1 last year and are almost the exact opposite of that description.

I feel like Boston Calling is really just working to stay as different as possible from other fests. Obviously there is going to be a crossover with other fests at some point but I think they realize no one demographic is going to keep them afloat so they are trying to get as many people interested as possible even if it's just for one band (Each day Tool/Mumford/Chance all seemed to have different specific crowd types). So I would actually agree they are going for the iconic acts but that they all have their own fan base that will buy tickets no matter what.
Also I have my fingers crossed that we will get two headliners for each day with this price bump. One at green.and the other at blue. It would really help to break up that giant crowd sitting at the green stage all day.

While I'm inclined to agree, that Sigur Ros/Chance conflict was rough and I'd be pretty bummed if that happened all three days. If they just want to book some bigger EDM names and throw 'em on the blue stage during the headliners that seems like a solid option to move more tickets. But if they pull some shit like Kendrick and Bjork at the same time...

The thin crowd for Sigur Ros made my experience ten thousand times better. And I still got to catch like 7 or 8 songs from Chance after.
That sigur ros show is fucking burned into the back of my brain. It was like watching aliens take over the world. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

They were huge on MTV when they first broke and their videos and unique visuals got a lot of attention. This was back when heavy MTV play meant a lot. Their base encompasses metal fans, prog afficionados, and "I don't normally listen to this sort of thing, but these guys are good" types, with a diverse age range of fans. Plus, Maynard's side projects have brought new fans into the fold.
I hope that everyone who tried to get early bird tickets got through. I logged into Front Gate a few minutes early and had no "system overload delays" when clicking links at 10 am, the way you sometimes get with other ticketing sites.
When push came to shove, I couldn't pull the trigger on $500+ for VIP, without knowing who's performing. I've been thrilled with some of the lineups and sorely disappointed by others, and while I've finally warmed up to The National in a big way, there's not one other act I really want to see whom I'm sure will be in the lineup. For $260-ish, after service charges, I'm more certain that I'll get my money's worth out of the lineup.
Interesting takeaway from the confirmation e-mail. It notes that gates open at 11 am. It doesn't list a different gate time for Friday.
The e-mail also notes, however, that there will be 45 acts across three stages, which is the same number as last year (except for the comedy thunderdome), so I'm not quite sure what the significance of opening the gates earlier on Friday than they opened last year might be.

It seems so silly for them to not bump it up to 48, but we'll see

I really hope they bring back their interesting lineup drops, rather than just show the poster one January morning at 9 am. And I hope they dump the clueless sports radio guys, too.
While the "cards in the mail" was a bit of a mess, the vinyl scavenger hunts and Twitter clues made for a fun evening. If you want to drop it all at once, start with one of their great lineup announcement videos, 15 min before the poster is revealed.
Here's an idea. Set up a game show set at a large club or theater and do the lineup drop as Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune, where each correct answer is an act that's performing. Then, at the end of the evening, you have one of the local bands/rappers in the lineup do a short set.
Especially with the new production/ 'most ambitious stage production since stop making sense' my presale ticket would be worth that, alone.
And the fact that, again, when someone asked Aaron Dessner during that q+a before last year's festival if they ever wanter to book David, Arron replied with "we have tired and we will try again" makes me hopeful...
Though where would he fit on the lineup? Bon Iver's slot? Would he even be able to headliner a 30k crowd these days?

The more I listen to Sigur Ros, the more I believe it was a god damn coup for them to book them last year, and still do not understand how they did it.

IT MAKES NO SENSE.
Even more confused how Hangout booked them...
But yeah, that booking is giving me a sliver of hope we'll get Bjork, although with QOTSA and The National both likely adding her might make the top of the undercard a little too "old indie rock"-heavy

You think? Sigur Ros could have easily closed a stage at Boston Calling back when they were still at City Hall Plaza.
Can you talk about the volunteer experience? I'm thinking about it this year, and looked into it last year but the process for applying seemed insane.
roonectar has volunteered for BC since the beginning. Maybe he was staff this year, though? He was all fancy driving artists in golf carts and I never saw him
Volunteering is the BEST. They’re super flexible with shifts, pays good and everyone is just so happy to help and see the show for free. I worked VIP entrance or box most years when it was sill at city hall plaza but last year was my first time in artist transpo. Whole new ballgame. Driving those giant sprinter vans all around Boston to get artists at Logan or their hotel n then weaving all around the festival was a little stressful but still a blast. Driving Brandi Carlile around and had her warming up in the seat behind me. Almost gave my paycheck back after feeling more than compensated by the experience. (Almost ) if anyone has the opportunity to get on the staff jump at it. Pulse you get to meet up with roosters like Bonz between shifts !

I'd hardly call them "old indie rock." QOTSA was formed in 1996 and the debut LP by The National was released in 2001. If you want to throw an "old" tag on an act which launched in the 60's - 80's, that's fair, but the 90's were a minute-and-a-half ago.
Good is good, regardless of era.
