They posted another photo saying they double everything. Bathrooms, entrance lines, food vendors, etc. That's pretty damn cool. I think I'm more excited about this lineup than anything else right now.
Breaking my 2+ year streak of lurking for the most part...but I'm definitely excited about the improvements, etc. that they announced this morning. 2018 will be my 6th time attending Boston Calling and third year volunteering so it's been great to see it grow. I was working a volunteer shift late on Sunday night this past year in the lost and found for a few hours after the fest officially ended. We had several even organizers come over to us while we were there asking how the weekend went, what people's biggest complaints were, and how they could work on improvements for next year. It seemed like they were really trying to take everyone's comments/concerns into consideration to make the fest run smoother in the future at the Harvard location.

It's nice to think that they genuinely want to improve the organization, given how many negative reports there were.
That said, they continue to want to appeal to the lowest common denominator, which is not going to make the crowd any better. You could argue that Crash Line has no choice if they want to keep competing against every other festival in the country (which is obviously why they made the move and expanded), but it's not going to be enough for yours truly to automatically attend even with a stellar lineup.

Can you talk about the volunteer experience? I'm thinking about it this year, and looked into it last year but the process for applying seemed insane.

2+ year streak broken just for me?! Are we friends now? This is great!
I;m working on talking my lady into this right now. She has limited time off but Im trying to convince her this and a road trip is worth it.

roonectar has volunteered for BC since the beginning. Maybe he was staff this year, though? He was all fancy driving artists in golf carts and I never saw him
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

For sure! The first year I volunteered was 2016 because I had known someone that volunteered past years. The sign up was pretty straight forward from what I remember and opened up in late April for new volunteers. It was a short form online and we got to choose our one must see act and they would try to make sure they didn't schedule you during that. Once accepted the head of the volunteers would have you added to a Boston Calling volunteer facebook page to keep everyone updated (emails sent for those not on fb). They created a spreadsheet with your shifts and it gets released a few weeks before the festival. I do believe the sign up changed, however, for 2017. I think the change in location plus the lineup and increased cost had people flocking to volunteer. The new volunteer sign up ended up opening in January or February and filled immediately. They did notify all old volunteers that we would still get spots if we wanted to return which was nice.
Both years I've worked 2-6hr shifts and I really do enjoy myself. Everyone I worked with was incredibly nice and helpful and you really get a behind the scenes looks at the fest - especially since one of the heads of volunteering is friends with one of the heads of Boston Calling. First year I worked at the 21+ wrist band station and this past year at lost and found. I personally really enjoy the volunteer community. I met two of my best friends volunteering in 2016 and camped with them two weeks later at Bonnaroo because we were all volunteering there as well and I was planning on going solo.
One of the cool things about volunteering at BC is that they actually pay you for your shifts (I think its $12/hr) supposedly because of some weird MA law. They're also usually always looking for volunteers to help set up a few days before the festival even starts and to break down when it's done and you would get paid for those shifts as well if you wanted to do more and have a flexible schedule. Additionally, the people who run the BC volunteering run the volunteering for Copenhagen Beer Fest so it's a good way to get in with them too. I haven't worked the beer festival so I can't speak to that experience but have some friends I can reach out to if you want more info about that.
Kind of a long post but hopefully that hits on some of the points you were looking for. Let me know if you want any additional information about anything!

I'm definitely biased because I've lived in the area for my entire life but Boston itself is worth the trip too.

Looks like they released the lineup January 12th last year. Seems like some solid upgrades. Does anyone know if they had similar viewing areas for VIP last year? I know in the old location viewing was so far away it was never even worth considering.

Thanks so much! This is awesome information, and exactly what I'm looking for. I've volunteered at fests before but with nonprofits, not as an actual fest volunteer, and this seems much more doable given this information (although it sounds like it might be a bit difficult for a newbie to get a spot). The cost is definitely what makes me consider doing this, since I've been trying to go to a new festival every year and not spend money on the one festival that's down the street from me, but I didn't know you get paid for it, which is a nice bonus.
Do you have to put a deposit down or something? I recall it being something like the entire cost of the ticket.

Happy to help! You do end up missing a few acts here and there but I personally felt like all of the perks of volunteering outweighed that. As a bonus we also got to go in a back entrance and didn't have to deal with any of the madness out front. On Saturday this year my friend and I didn't have any shifts but we showed up early and got to go into the festival grounds before the gates officially opened. Friends that worked some post-fest shifts said they got to keep some cool things when cleaning out artists trailers and such as well.
First year we volunteered we put down a deposit through paypal. I know that this year was a little different - you put down a deposit but I'm pretty sure they gave it back to us before the festival actually happened. I remember there was a minor freak out when people noticed that the hold was taken off of their money because we weren't expecting this.
There any evidence Pearl Jam might actually do this?
They just announced a Euro tour that starts mid-June. I think they'd be a very strong candidate for the big headliner the producers have discussed and I also know Gov Ball has been after them for a while and could see them pulling double duty before hopping across the pond.
They might be too big, but for some reason i got a gut feeling right when I saw the tour announcement.
In terms of making this more realistic, I'd more quickly drop Arcade Fire for someone smaller than I would Pearl Jam. Could all be wishful thinking though, and if Pearl Jam is only an option at the expense of the undercard my vote will always go towards a stronger undercard
If PJ and Kendrick are the top two, I really hope Arcade Fire isn't the third name. They're probably too expensive for how much interest there would actually be in them.
I also wouldn't be surprised if Nine Inch Nails was the third.

Going with two 90s headliners might not be the best idea. Although if they get PJ and Kendrick they're probably pretty safe in terms of ticket sales
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
Starting a Likely/Confirmed section on the OP. I think Khalid and QOTSA are the only ones we can reasonably speculate other than The National, but if I forgot about someone else let me know

Man I am absolutely loving the names that are being talked about. Would love to go to the new site for the first time. That City Hall Plaza killed my feet lol
