I think most of the non-country shows are being absorbed by the Anthem. Modest Mouse, Beck, Fleet Foxes, etc. all played Merriweather on recent tours and now have Anthem shows within a month of each other.
I like that the Anthem is a better option than Echostage for bands too big to play the 9:30 club and it's cool that Lorde is playing there instead of Capital One Arena. But it seems to have taken away a lot of the good stuff at Merriweather.
How much of a competitor is Live Nation's Jiffy Lube Live to Merriweather? And would you say that Merriweather is a better venue overall than The Anthem? I'm somewhat new to the area so I'm still getting absorbed into the whole live scene here.
IMP launched a years long lawsuit against LiveNation claiming that the company’s policy of locking in their artists to play Jiffy Lube instead of having the option to play the IMP-run Merriweather was anti competitive, so the compition is very real.
I think part of what’s going on is that IMP quietly pushed back the beginning of the MPP season after the roof collapsed, so we’re seeing some stuff that in the past has been at Merriweather get booked at Anthem. The bigger name country stars are announcing tours further out, so scheduling them at MPP isn’t an issue.
Or maybe they’re trying to book all the “indie” stuff at Anthem. I guess we’ll see.

I didn't even realize that the roof had collapsed. That would make sense to divert shows in May to a different venue.
Wondering if anyone on this board has something positive to say about Jiffy Lube Live. I don't like that venue and haven't been back in over a decade.
Damn. The number of country shows announced at MPP so far have been crazy. I think it's been 6. Can we get some other shows, please? Lol.

I like The Anthem. It’s a cool venue. I like that bands like Beck, Bon Iver, ODESZA, and QoTSA are willing to play and intimate place like that when they could all be or have played at MPP before. However, there is a downside and that is some bands charge a handful for playing there. I guess it is what it is and that’s part of the plan to get them to come. I just hope they continue to bring in acts like Beck and FJM. It would be cool to see bands like Arctic Monkeys and Mumford & Sons in an intimate place like that. It just sucks paying high prices for what they are likely to charge.

Yeah I noted that acts such as Lorde and The Killers were charging $100 a ticket, but I guess that's the price you pay for seeing them in a venue three times smaller than the arenas on the rest of their respective tours.

I like that it exists so that an artist playing a Live Nation only tour doesnt skip DC. That's all i have to say about that

I went to see Radiohead at Jiffy Lube in 08 or so and the road in flooded, and they couldn’t get people into the venue. We had been planning to get there hours early to tailgate but missed the opener (Liars!) and barely made it in time for the show. Some of my friends had to straight up turn around and go home cause they couldn’t get in. I’ve only been back twice since (Farm Aid and Iron Maiden) and both times getting out of the lot after the show was a complete nightmare. Over an hour wait (way worse than I’ve ever experienced at MPP). If you ever go there for something, just pay for VIP parking. Getting me to go there on a weeknight would take an act of god.
The venue itself is whatever, just a big concrete shed.

The only Live Nation amphitheater I've dealt with in the past was also trash (Xfinity Center in MA), but the downsides didn't stop me from having amazing show experiences there. Hopefully Jiffy Lube Live will serve a similar purpose.

Those two were too expensive imo (yet both sold well above face on the secondary market), but I sat first row at Bon Iver for 65 bucks, which is pretty much impossible at a Live Nation or AXS venue, so that was dope

I wonder what a decent seat would have cost at Capital One Arena for those shows if they had played there.
Lorde has such great opening acts for that show but by the time my friends and I had decided we were willing to pay $100 it sold out.

That same year I saw Radiohead in the aforementioned LN-amphitheater in MA, and had to wait over two hours (!) to get out of the parking lot.

Pretty much exactly that. Parking and leaving at Jiffy Lube is a real challenge if you dont do VIP parking, or get into the lot right next to VIP parking.

Probably $60-80 if her other dates (such as Philly) are anything to go off of.

If you can get into this lot its pretty close to as good as VIP tbh. You have to ask the attendant to let you in so they dont send you to that massive one on the other side
The shows at the Anthem definitely vary widely price wise. But on average general admission is in the $50 ballpark, which I think is pretty good. These bands would alternatively be playing somewhere like MPP or DAR, where you would at least pay $40 for lawn/far away seats. I just got tickets to Beck and David Byrne, excited to see a seated show there.
Upsetting these artists aren't coming to MPP. Much closer to me and I have zero desire to drive into the clusterfuck of traffic that is D.C
The Anthem definitely favors NOVA people versus those living in some of the Maryland suburbs. Orange/Silver/Blue/Yellow all go right to L'enfant making it super convenient from Virginia.

I'm inclined to agree, Merriweather has free parking and you don't have to deal with DC traffic as much.. Also it's probably one of the most beautiful outdoor venues on the east coast. And in the past they've always had insane exclusive billings like last year when Belle & Sebastian, Spoon, Andrew Bird and Ex Hex all played together, or M83 & Tame Impala in 2016, or Queens of the Stone Age and St. Vincent in 2014. You won't ever see those pairings at The Anthem.
03/14 - Thievery Corporation 04/25 - Black Country, New Road 05/04 - In Flames, Gatecreeper 05/10 - Modern Life is War 05/21 - Spite, Bodysnatcher, Thrown 05/29 - Knocked Loose, Loathe, Show me the Body, Speed 06/02 - Bush 06/22 - George Thorogood 06/23 - Dillinger Escape Plan, Deadguy, Candy, Carbomb

The Anthem's less convenient for everyone in Maryland, yet more convenient over Merriweather for those living sans vehicle in DC. That just is what it is.
The one country show they booked at Anthem for Justin Moore, which was easily the cheapest ticket (25.00) for a show there got cancelled and moved to Salisbury, MD.

I guess those elite city dwellers just could not appreciate real music.

Little Big Town is playing March 3
If I can get free tix for this I'm definitely going just for Kacey Musgraves.

On the Anthem vs MPP thing, I remember hearing that Anthem is limited to 100 or so shows a year. I can’t find anything about it now so maybe I dreamed it, but if that is the case, and IMP is moving shows from Anthem to MPP at the last minute because of the roof collapse, that could mean an extra busy MPP late-summer/fall season to compensate.
