Metal detectors actually make the security less strict imo. Basically as long as you don't have any larg pieces of metal on you they barely even check anything else in my experience.

Regarding security: can't speak for last year, but in 2016 there were reports of people getting evicted for weed use. Also, during the days that I attended, there were two separate security companies, one of which featured complete scumbags who would have been better off at Rikers Island rather than Randall's Island (we actually complained and the other security company didn't have anything good to say either about the others).
VIP is rather cheap for this so it's tempting but still going to hold off. Feel like it'll be easy to get in for below face leading up to the festival.

So, this will be our first festival at Randall's Island. I recall people saying it'd be a good idea to stay in Long Island City or Astoria, is that true? If not, best place to stay? I don't mind walking as long as it's not miles and miles.

I mean, I'm a bit biased since I live in Astoria, but I think it's the best bet. It's more affordable than Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, access to the festival is fairly easy (it's about a 30-minute walk from the foot of the Queensboro Bridge to the gates, and that's even better on the way home at night when you don't have to wait in line for a shuttle or ferry. But, if the walk there ever feels like too much, you can get an Uber over there for something in the 20-something dollar range), there's a great restaurant scene and a pretty decent nightlife, and it's easy to access Manhattan via the N, W, or R (assuming the subway's working). The only real downside is if you're planning to spend any significant amount of time in Brooklyn, as that's not a super-easy trip. It's not awful, either, but my time in the BK has significantly decreased since I moved to Astoria.

I was fully anticipating hotel prices to be out of control, as is typical for NYC in the summer. However, we found the Airbnb prices to be less of a value than a hotel. There's actually a decent amount of hotels (4 stars) in Manhattan that are between $145-$200.
Highly recommend the Millenium Hilton UN Plaza ($189/night), about a $15 cab to RI or looks to be like a 25min subway ride.

I was going to be facetious and poke fun at you, but you provided some good info, so thank you.
Good to know about the hotel prices. I'm hoping to have enough points to redeem for the entire weekend, but we'll see. So, if we take the subway, it drops us off right on Randall's Island or do we get off and walk over a bridge?

You can walk the bridge or take the x80 bus to the island.
If you are still looking for places to stay I would recommend an airbnb in Williamsburg. You can take the shuttle and get picked up and dropped off right in the area where all the aftershows usually are too.

Awesome. Ah, I forgot about the shuttle option. How long does it usually take for the shuttle to make the trip? The Coachella shuttle ain't bad, but Palm Springs traffic doesn't compare to New York traffic.
tighest festival security I've ever seen was at Gov Ball last year
Interesting. What were your experiences there?
I feel like most people say the opposite and complain about how light the security is; leading to underage drinking.
I think I saw 20 cops while I was walking over that bridge, probably saw 50 to 60 cops in total, was very surprised at the Police presence in that way and it was un-easing to me. I understand the security concerns in the light of the Ariana Grande tragedy but it felt like overkill to me

Oh you mean the cops, not the security. Yeah thats pretty much been par for the course for all large scale events in NYC for a while now. They aren't there for drug offenses or anything like that.

The thing is, those cops aren't there to bust people looking to have a good time. Those cops are there to make sure we don't have a Manchester or Las Vegas. Honestly, I made it a point leaving the festival each night to thank them, because the sight of them did make me feel a lot safer given the state of the world/recent events at the time.

I know they aren’t there to bust people but they end up doing so when they are there. I saw 8 people in cuffs walking back from the fest while I was walking there on the bridge, the cops surrounded by two other groups of kids and a couple of college kids in front of me walking in and they were putting their weed in their shoe and if I hadn’t let them know cops were coming from the otherside they woulda got popped too

The few arrests I saw were all drinking/smoking while walking the bridge. Just wait, friends.

That was my experience as well, and obviously I agree with the waking part, but my point is that it’s not good vibes walking into a fest with people getting arrested for minor offenses like that to me, and even at other city fests like Lolla or Made In America, I haven’t seen the sort of police force out busting people like I did at Gov Ball
I'm thinking about buying a Sunday ticket now but at the same time I'm thinking if these would go on StubHub below face value days before the event...Wait or pull the trigger now and save $20?

Wait till the week of and get a ticket for $50. Not a knock, just been the case for 2 years now.
