I'm a pretty casual Smashing Pumpkins fan. I was looking at Montreal tickets but I wouldn't shell out more than $100 to see them.
Where do they fan on the 90's rock band scale in everyone's opinion? In a list of like: PJ, Foos, AIC, Nirvana, etc.
Maybe like after Green Day, but before Foo Fighters
That’s a bit low for my tastes. The first two Pumpkins records are stone classics, and I’ve always been of the opinion that Mellon Collie could’ve been seminal if it were boiled down to one single album-length collection.
Problem is, the drop-off after that is fairly steep.
It says a lot when Radiohead never had a breakup as a band and still selling out arenas any time they want with fresh material/sound vs a band that has teased a original lineup reunion for over 18 years, still sounding like in the 90s, charging for reunion like they were GnR with no cult to back you up + mediocre last albums)

A solo MSG show was dumb. A Smashing Pumpkins x Pixies show would have sold out Jones Beach. Could have also sold out a SP x Alice In Chains x Bush show. Egos man.
It's crazy to compare Foo Fighters, Green Day, and Smashing Pumpkins musically. As someone too young to remember the 90's - FF and GD are still very relevant, no one my age gives a shit about Smashing Pumpkins.
That being said: SP has so many amazing and beautiful hits...i'll be there on 8/1 for $30 bucks.

Lol, yep.
Ask someone 22 and under. They've likely never even fucking heard of Smashing Pumpkins.

So. It seems like the downplaying of Smashing Pumpkins as a "band", or anything other than Billy Corgan plus a bunch of assholes, has led to the perception that no one should care who's playing in these shows, other than Billy Corgan, who has been playing amphitheatres for years?
Honestly I don’t care of Radiohead’s intentions with their tour. So long as the shows stay good and they continue to put out amazing albums I can’t complain
Totally. Agreed 100%. I am sure a lot of Weeknd fans dont mind it in his case either.
I just found out The War on Drugs tix for BK Steel are sold-out, Bowery presents always gives an update on low ticket alert, not this time since the tix did not sell out the first 2 days..totally bummed.
For those who got Radiohead MSG GA tickets, it looks like they're mobile only, as in NOT a pdf but literally scanning the bar code. Also, in good news, it seems MSG has FINALLY decided to join every other arena and offer a full GA floor and not split it half.
Count me in for SP at MSG. They were my very first show when they played that same venue in the fall of '96. Plus the fact that we don't have to deal with any Zeitgist tracks is a huge bonus.

Except that Weeknd shows stopped being good when he ceased playing his OG tracks, and started relying more on backing vocals...
That said, I'm still considering the Friday of Panorama as a fun appetizer for two nights of Radiohead that same weekend. Hope ticket prices drop like in prior years.

He is still wildly popular, and I am sure Pano will pull the biggest crowd of the weekend for his night. But agreed that in my opinion as well his newer material isnt as good.

I’ve seen The Weeknd 3 times and I’ve never noticed him relying on the backing track more than necessary. There are even parts (that rap style verse in Reminder) that I thought for sure he would but ended up nailing it.

It's not that Abel neglects to sing or rap anymore, but that he seems to care more about just creating a big party. For instance, there's a portion of Crew Love where he used to stick out the mic to the audience to have them sing, and now there's a backing vocal on that portion of the track (as in, not trusting the audience to fill him in). But it's also a reflection on the type of music he makes now, of course.

But it doesn't stops scalpers from reselling tix, the transfer option in TM is available in some venues (MSG for example)... In my case I got very lucky and I'm going all 4 nights (3 GA, 1 nosebleed seat) ..For SP I'm going to wait till the week of the show, I can see scalpers selling it below face at a 200 section.
The worst that could've happened to them is Radiohead announcing their US NorthEast tour the day before (same day in other venues) as SP..being a fan of both...Radiohead gets the priority.

Feel like they should have swapped prices. SP MSG floor should be $99 + while Radiohead should be at the $ 160 + fees level.
I really don't understand why they didn't go the Misfits route to reunion, which should be the new gold standard for that size of reunion (e.g. non- GnR type reunions which can sell out anything, anytime).
Announce one big comeback show at Grant Park in Chicago or something and act like it's possibly a one time only thing; have 40,000 people pay $150 a ticket to see your band and two openers and it's all die hards. Then play two nights at the Forum in LA and MSG in NYC six months later. Drum up some big time publicity, get some positive press rolling, then look to add on shows.
No clue why they went straight for the "we can sell out arenas all across America!" route.

It was also a piss poor idea to announce a massive tour on the heels of a bunch of negative publicity.. If they had to announce something, why didn’t they announce their record together, tour dates later? Seemed poorly executed all around

Maybe the record isn't very good and Billy knows it
Well apparently I'm one of the few suckers that still thought The Smashing Pumpkins had major clout and could move tickets. I paid almost $160 for a floor ticket at Wells Fargo, and was getting hyped looking at the proposed setlists and all, and then I read these comments, which are on more than a few threads on this board, and I'm getting pretty bummed out.
03/14 - Thievery Corporation 04/25 - Black Country, New Road 05/04 - In Flames, Gatecreeper 05/10 - Modern Life is War 05/21 - Spite, Bodysnatcher, Thrown 05/29 - Knocked Loose, Loathe, Show me the Body, Speed 06/02 - Bush 06/22 - George Thorogood 06/23 - Dillinger Escape Plan, Deadguy, Candy, Carbomb

1) Cheers to the Lo Moon at Bowery Ballroom show (see ya there!) Loving that album
2) I disagree about the steep dropoff after Mellon Collie. Adore is plenty enjoyable, front-to-back, it just wasn't genre-defining and vital to the "alternative nation" crowd. 1998 was such a weird time when all the alt-rock sure things (minus Foo Fighters) were coming up short and nu metal/alt-pop was taking over. Machina has some gems on it as well though it has some gadawful moments ("Heavy Metal Machine"). Machina II is a bit hard to listen to in full though I think a lot of that has to do with the muddy production. Zeitgist was a wash but Oceania and Monuments To An Elegy have enjoyable moments.

Yeah, I think they have too many dates. Should have been 10-12 cities max encouraging people to travel. LA and Chicago sold out and they've added another date but I think everywher else is struggling. Even MSG isn't full and there's a two day gap after it before the next date which leads me to believe they have a 2nd on hold. Honestly, I just don't think the "original" Smashing Pumpkins have enough clout for people looking to get some nostalgia after Billy has been on the road for a better part of a decade. A better idea would have been multiple nights at a Hammerstein or Radio City with the promise of "Nothing past 2000!" setlist-wise.

I am with jorgethekraken on this. Siamese Dream is a great album. Mellon Collie only had a handful of good songs. And everything after that was just straight up bad. But in any event, we are all pretty much in agreement that 1998 was the last time they even released anything remotely relevant. Its 2018. 20 years since people cared. No wonder this tour is drawing flies.
Am I the only one who thinks maybe it would've been smart if Smashing Pumpkins had gone about this whole reunion better? Maybe they should've booked some smaller venues and brought D'Arcy on board, and stuff like that. Just my opinion. Anyone else agree?
