One name we don’t toss around nearly enough in this thread, who would make for an awesome unannounced headliner, is actually in Massachusetts for a show the week after Newport, and would fit in with the other awesome females rocking on the Saturday main stage: Dolly Parton

The Hyannis show? Pretty sure that’s an impersonator show.
Two reasons I’m not a fan of unannounced headliners:
1) I can’t spend the next month getting hyped over the artist. I’ve mentioned this before; I get almost as much happiness from a festival in the months leading up to it, listening to the music and anticipating the sets, as I do attending.
2) I don’t have time to familiarize myself with their music. Hell, if Sturgill was an unannounced headliner, I’d be pissed that I didn’t have these past 3 months to get super into his music (and now he’s one of my most anticipated sets). Even a huge act like Roger Waters, outside of the few classic Pink Floyd songs that I know, I’d be bummed I didn’t get a chance to learn more of the songs he may play during a headliner set (if unannounced). Bruce and Paul (both Pauls) are the only two/three where I’d probably recognize most songs even without a chance to review (maybe put Arcade Fire and Mumford in this category as well). But if it’s a James Taylor or John Fogerty (or even Neil Young) type act, I wouldn’t be able to get the most out of the set by it being unannounced.
Suggestion. Don’t listen to the next big band\show at all before you go. Going in blind (even to a band you love) is soooooo much better)
I can’t wait to hear the rumors circulate at the fest this year. Gonna be all kinds of folk and rock legends on a yacht, and hanging out at a mansion...

I have been to some fantastic shows in which I’ve gone in blind. But I wouldn’t say it’s sooooo much better. When doing so, my enjoyment is more at the discretion of the performance. While there are artists who kill it live, there are many who do not and being able to relate to the music becomes the selling point of the show.
For instance, I have never seen Neil Young (except with Buffalo Springfield), but I assume he with Crazyhorse probably crushes it live. Based upon reviews, I imagine myself leaving that show enjoying it no matter my prior knowledge. However, if you put Neil on a stool and have him play slower songs with just an acoustic guitar, I’d really wish I buffed up on his music before the show so that I can better relate to the music.
Thanks for thoroughly bursting my bubble beaker and itrainmonkeys Honestly, I love the current lineup and I'll be happy with whoever the headliner is. Especially if it's any of the names floated on here recently. I'm starting to get super excited; less than a month to go!
QUESTIONS -- Call me confused, as I've stopped speculating. Too much speculating for the Dylan anniversary = let down, even though I thoroughly enjoyed the set. SO -- Answers for one or more most welcome:
A) There are 19 listings for each day. Surprised a few here and there aren't playing the museum. Don't acts continue in the Museum after 2 PM? Could that be a duo like Tuck and Patti? B) If 19 for all three days, why is "More Artists Coming" (no longer Coming Soon) only for Saturday? C) What does more Announcements, then, mean vs More Artists? Restrictions on straw length? D) Why the idea that there is more than one artist left to be announced? (To fill a Change is Gonna Come?)
The idea of an unannounced guest whose name always leaks (except Kristofferson?) seems a little dated in 2018 considering social media... unless its at the request of the artist.

I am guessing that we get at least one museum specific announcement for Friday and Sunday based on the Outside Folk announcement for Saturday. Personally, I am only "expecting" a full unannounced set on Saturday. The other days seem pretty filled

Typically there are 18 main stage artists a day (although they have fit in 19 before), and then museum stage acts.
Friday, currently has 18 main stage artists, and 1 museum announcement. Friday, then has more announcements coming because there is at least another museum announcement to be made.
Saturday, currently has 17 main stage artists, and 2 museum announcements (hence why most believe there will be unannounced headliner since there isn't an obvious headliner in the group of main stage artists).
Sunday, currently has 18 main stage artists, and 1 museum artist. Sunday then has more announcements coming because there is at least another museum announcement to be made. At a foundation event, Jay said "Change is Going to Come" will be the penultimate set, which has led to speculation that there will be another unannounced headliner after "Change is Going to Come," but there has been mixed signals. If there is an unannounced headliner, then they are either fitting 19 artists into the schedule that day, or something where Nels Cline is some sort of travlling show throughout the day.
Biggest question in my mind is if there are unannounced headliners on Saturday and Sunday, whether we'll have an unannounced headliner on Friday too, and they will try to fit in 19 artists on that day as well.
Still think Isbell or Sturgill is the Friday headliner, and we will get big unannounced headliners on Saturday and Sunday.
I don't know. That didn't stop them announcing Roger Waters.
Perhaps a lesson learned from that? Fingers crossed.
Hope so. I saw Bruce on Broadway last night. I believe it was the greatest concert/show I've ever seen. Jon Bon Jovi watched from the balcony and left with him in his town car afterwards. The show was one long goose bump inducing setlist mixed with intimate stories of sadness humor and joy. There were times the whole audience was laughing hysterically and times they were near to or in tears. It was often just Bruce playing guitar and harmonica under a spotlight or near darkness. My kid went up near the stage after the show. Bruce came over, shook his hand and handed him the pick he used. Guys a national treasure.
Thanks for the replies. I have been attending enough years to understand the acts per stage, etc, but just confused by the difference between "Performers" and "Announcements" to come.
I've been saying since Jon Batiste stated he is headlining, that he and the Dap Kings will be the House Band for the closing act -- that's what makes him Penultimate. They play, then bring on guests...perhaps someone special, perhaps artists already on the bill.I also can see two or three acts taking shorter sets. In other words, change the scheduling formula.
I still don't quite get the reason they suddenly changed the language on the schedule...that's what has me befuzzled. Could be some intern was given a thesaurus.

We often use the term unannounced act/artist/set to refer to an artist that plays the festival but was not announced.
My thinking is that Newport is using a similar thought process/language. Basically Newport is telling us that there are still additional acts to play the festival on Saturday (that have not been announced), but there are no remaining announcements to introduce them prior to the fest. Thus there will be unannounced artists.
As for why it differs from Friday and Sunday, we still have museum stage announcements between now and the fest. Thus, I think we can get some clarification if we get the remaining museum stage announcement for Friday, and all mention of “More” something “coming” disappears from the website for that day.

Ah lord. Trying to keep expectations real but last year I was “Bruce is headlining” guy. Now we’ve (likely) got an unannounced headliner. I really think that means they have someone that’s gonna live up to the hype, seeing as thy learned their lesson from ‘65 revisited and put the “unannounced super jam” before the closer last year. And here Bruce just so happens to be taking a break from Broadway our weekend.
This’ll be our 5th festival, but only our second after moving to the west coast. It’s gotten exponentially more expensive and difficult the last two years, but it’s my happy place so I’ve made it happen. I know in the next couple of years it won’t work out for one reason or another, but if this happens and it turns out to be my last year...I’ll be at peace.
