Popped over to Reddit just to see their take on the seemingly missing headliner(s). Not sure if it was a comment from one of you, but I really liked the theory that an act like Bruce may not be announced to prevent logistic nightmares (resale tickets spiking in value, boaters flooding the bay).
Obviously the theory fits my own interests (give me Bruce! Or the Kinks. Paul Simon would be alright but I’d worry he’d come without band and that’s part of the fun of one of his shows)

Or Vedder. Still think he makes more sense than Bruce.

Glorietta tickets on sale today. NY has two dates...one on the Monday after NFF in a tiny venue and one in October at a bigger but still intimate venue.
May try for both but definitely going for the October date

I don't know. That didn't stop them announcing Roger Waters.
Ohhhh. On the NFF website, Saturday’s “More Announcements Coming” has been replaced with “More Artists Coming.” Only day that has changed. Makes me think we’re definitely getting an unannounced act as a headliner.

Yup, I think that’s it for announcements Saturday...

If they go the unannounced headliner route, they better fire or kick out anyone that gives it away. I know it's tough to do because of people yapping and social media. When James Taylor was there, we knew way before and it kind of ruined the surprise. Even last year, Roger Waters rumblings were being talked about from the food vendors and NFF volunteers/staff. Blah. Old man rant over

I don't mind unannounced but I'd much rather know at least a couple hours in advance since conflicts are a real thing at this festival. I'd hate to be waiting and missing a top act of mine and then the reveal is someone I'm not that excited for.
Thankfully, it's easy to get from place to place so not a big concern

Wasn't My Morning Jacket - pre-Waters - unannounced? I remember seeing pictures of them warming up on social media that were posted by vendors... I expected it to be them so it wasn't too bad but I really hope an unannounced headliner isn't spoiled that way.
Nathaniel Rateliff was spoiled pretty early on when he played unannounced at the Harbor Tent.
When James Taylor played unannounced I had no idea who it was until Jay Sweet said his name on stage. If you try really hard to not listen to conversations and not discuss these things with others it is possible to be surprised.
I really hope the unannounced artists live up to the massive expectations that are going to build up.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

On the one hand, an awesome unannounced headliner brings a lot of intrigue and anticipation. On the other, I'd like to be able to plan and figure out what I'm doing for the FJM after show...

I'm hoping unannounced is playing at the same time as Cheech and Chong. Not sure who else would make sense to close the Quad on Saturday.

You guys realize that you can leave NFF after the headliner and still make it to the aftershow before it begins right? I’ve done it pretty much every time.

Sure, but if you're in a group it's much easier to get a front/2nd row seat if you leave early.

I have mixed experiences with unannounced.
Missed out on James Taylor, despite the Boston f'n Globe spilling the beans that morning, was very disappointed.
Heard about MMJ beforehand, made sure to be there. So glad I knew and made sacrifices of other sets for it that day.
Heard about Rateliff last year, and skipped the clusterfuck for what ended up being an extremely memorable Kiwanuka set. Even though I had seen him (MK) 6 weeks before that, and he put on basically the same set, the crowd was fucking phenomenal. The quietest and most respectful crowd I have literally ever been in.
Didn't know about Waters until it happened, that blew my mind.

I get so nervous about this kind of stuff, I'd rather leave early, grab a bite to eat/drink, and then walk over to Jane Pickens and get a spot in the first two rows. It's more peace of mind for me, as I've been stuck for 2 hours before getting out of the festival.

I’ve had the ritual the last three years of leave a little early on Friday run to Tilted Barn, Saturday leaving about the same time so I can shower after sweating like a pig and going to the byob restaurant near the blues cafe for dinner and then walk to Deer Tick, then Sunday I’m usually one of the last ones out of the park because I don’t want to go home. I only had one evening where I was kind of pressed to get to an aftershow and it was after Alabama Shakes and I still got to the Blues cafe 30 minutes before Dawes got on stage. Definitely not leaving early on Friday this year though if St. Vincent is closing.
Two reasons I’m not a fan of unannounced headliners:
1) I can’t spend the next month getting hyped over the artist. I’ve mentioned this before; I get almost as much happiness from a festival in the months leading up to it, listening to the music and anticipating the sets, as I do attending.
2) I don’t have time to familiarize myself with their music. Hell, if Sturgill was an unannounced headliner, I’d be pissed that I didn’t have these past 3 months to get super into his music (and now he’s one of my most anticipated sets). Even a huge act like Roger Waters, outside of the few classic Pink Floyd songs that I know, I’d be bummed I didn’t get a chance to learn more of the songs he may play during a headliner set (if unannounced). Bruce and Paul (both Pauls) are the only two/three where I’d probably recognize most songs even without a chance to review (maybe put Arcade Fire and Mumford in this category as well). But if it’s a James Taylor or John Fogerty (or even Neil Young) type act, I wouldn’t be able to get the most out of the set by it being unannounced.
