Pretty awesome final night at the Deer Tick aftershow. I spent the whole night dancing next to Brandi Carlile (jealous fawnmart ?). Guests, beyond Twain and the Lone Bellow, included Leon Bridges, Brandi Carlile (thanks to the crowd chanting her up on stage), Nicole Atkins, Kam Franklin, and Sharon Van Etten. Langhorne was in the audience and joined in the final number.

First Sunday night Tick show and I totally understand why that's the coveted one. Definitely beat my expectations.
So damn crowded, we were near the door and I didn't see them turn away any person, prepaid or not.
We counted at least 50 people that they let in unticketed before most of the people with tickets showed up... I didn’t wanna say anything. Very liberal security team at the Newport Blues.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Another Sunday - Tick show in the books, and it did not disappoint. Packed like always...I scooped a spot right at the bar, so I could get drinks and not have to worry about getting back!
My last “complaint” post before following up with an apology / in Jay we trust post.
While there were some brilliant moments during yesterday’s headliner, including Chris Thile and Jon Batiste’s duet and the first few songs of the set in which the Dap Kings were focal and slaying, I was a little underwhelmed with the choice of that as the closing act. The two surprising guests were Leon and Chris, and I am a little bummed they didn’t have Leon perform a song of his own like Chris (would have loved to have heard a hit off the new album). And Ohio was already crushed two days prior and it was hard to follow that Crosby / Isbell performance. Valerie June seemed unprepared / unrehearsed. I thought having Rachael Price sing the namesake song was in poor taste with how many powerful and soulful black singers were at this year’s fest (she wasn’t born by the river in a little tent... she comes from a family of money / known performers).

I agree with pretty much all of this, especially the Rachael Price comment. I was very surprised she was the one chosen for that song.
Valerie is just a damn nutcase. Her actual set was great, but her comments between songs were just crazy.
I think a change is gonna come should've been in the speak out time slot with those special guests. Leon should've sang more. Cant believe prine/mumford/Crosby did not come out. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance, even rachel price, but it did feel a lot less special than last year.
I wish I caught that passenger busk set, but I didnt understand where it was happening.
Also I love Brandi, but if she's gonna play that many different sets they should have her play on Friday. By the time her actual set came along I felt like I had already seen a ton of her...should've gone to Bermuda triangle instead.
Do you think there's any way that the stage in the Quad could be raised a few feet higher? It's so hard to see anything if you can't get under the tent. And who would I contact to suggest this? I was just trying to figure out ways to make it easier to see on that stage. I think it's not a problem for Harbor because the viewing area is more narrow. The Quad has tons of people on both sides so the only good way to see is from the center.
To add to that, they should make the entire tent a no blanket zone, so annoying to see massive empty spaces of blankets under the tent when you're sweltering under the sun just outside it

They should def make the perimeters “no blanket zones”
Just like they have on the right side. But then allow blankets further back. This way there is a standing zone all around.

I loved this set but can understand some of your minor complaints. Though I didn't have a problem with some of them.
I'm glad we got their version of Ohio (even though it was played a few days earlier it's not like it's the only time I heard a song repeated by multiple bands over the weekend). I would have liked more Leon focus, for sure, though. One or two songs from his catalog would have been awesome considering he didn't play an actual set but I figure they were doing what they chose and that's fine.
Wouldn't be surprised if some of the songs seem under-rehearsed. Like Superjam at Bonnaroo they seem to put these things together and do a little bit of practice beforehand. But they also will just go with the flow and improvise (like Moses Sumney being coaxed into singing at the Phil Cook after show).
As for the Rachel Price choice? I don't really mind it and don't think about it being in poor taste. I don't think it was something forced upon Batiste and the other acts by Newport so I have to assume Jon played a part in inviting her and her song choice. I definitely thought we'd get Leon singing this but in the end it was just about spreading the song. I doubt the artists sharing the stage were bothered by her singing it. Seems like everyone playing is of the same kind of mindset/vibe.
And who cares if she's not born by a river? Dylan didn't ride the rails, Leon Bridges isn't from Ohio, and I bet Valerie June has, at some point, let somebody "turn her around" lol

Or, if nobody is there for an extended period of time, let people know that it's like the section under the tent for handicap/wheelchair spots: "You can stay here for now but if someone comes to claim this you may have to move".
It definitely is frustrating to see blankets take up space for a whole set (or longer) with nobody claiming that spot.
I'd be happy if they just invested in some more shade tents/coverage in the standing sections of Quad and Harbor.
Either move the blanket section back significantly on the quad or enforce a rule like they do for saved seating where you have to be in your seat by the end of the first song.

I don't think the Rachel Price selection was in poor taste, just not quite sure I understand the decision.
If she wanted to sing that song in a set of hers then I'm all for it, but as the "title track" of a set focused on equality/discrimination problems, choosing the whitest girl from the whitest band just doesn't seem logical when you've got a list of musical gems sitting in the sideline.
I agree though that it was likely Jon's choice and wasn't forced upon him.

As I peel the skin off of my body, I would be all for more shade tents in the Fort. We find that we just can't watch more than one set mid-day at the fort because of the sun. The one shade area back by the kids section is always packed with people. It could easily be extended along the back row.

Wow, what a great weekend! Here were my 10 favorite sets (9 full sets, 2 half, in order of appearance): Tyler Childers Moses Sumney Jason Isbell Hiss Beneath the Sacred Mountain Jenny Hamilton + Rostam (half) War and Treaty Bermuda Triangle (half) Brandi Carlile A Change is Gonna Come
There were so many acts I wanted to see, but I feel like I saw pretty much everything I was really looking forward to. The only choice I would revise is passing on Ben Harper and the Wood Brothers to see Sturgill. I’m also bummed I missed Margo, Colter Wall and Glen Hansard, did anybody here see the latter two? Hoping most of the sets get posted on NPR over the next couple of weeks. Also, I did not expect to like Passenger as much as I did, but I thought he did a great job.
Regarding Mumford: It was my first time seeing them, and even though I’m not that into them, I think they did a good job. The reaction was pretty mixed where I was standing, either people bailed pretty early or went nuts. I would be surprised to see Jay and the gang do another Unannounced headliner unless they actually pull Bruce or Neil, the expectations get too out of control.
Overall: It’s the 2nd year my wife and I have attended, and again, we had an absolute blast. I will try to convince our family and friends to come along for the ride next year (they weren’t ready to commit after my initial pitch last year, they need some persuading). I definitely want to try one of the Pickens shows next year, they both looked so good this year. Hope everybody here had a great time!

War and Treaty would’ve brought the house down on that song...
They were probably my biggest surprise of the weekend. Was thinking I’d do Twain or Pres Hall because none of War and Treaty’s studio stuff really grabbed me. But after Low Cut Connie, I liked the idea of something high energy to start the day and figured they’d be the best call. Holy fuck they destroyed. Wow. Thinking they’ll be back next year or 2020
Speaking of War and Treaty. They played during Glen Hansards set, which I stayed for the entire set, and they slayed. Definitely don’t regret missing some of the headliner on Sunday.
If you go to W and T FB Page, there is a cool video and story about how they collaborated with Glen
