James Felice and Jonny Fritz. Super underwhelming afterparty. JD and Tank were great openers (although it took Tank like 40 mins to set up). Only a couple covers. It was a solid Deer Tick show, but not for Newport. I guess literally everyone was at the other shows.
I ended up getting into Glorietta. It was wild. A complete 180 from the NFF show. It was a loud, sweaty, Matt Vasquez-led mess that was absolutely what I was hoping for.
They played Glorietta songs, a couple Vasquez songs and some of the stranger cover selections I’ve seen, including Friends in low Places and an impromptu Green Day cover when the show was over. Turned into more of a drunken karaoke party towards the end.
Was a great nightcap. Recommend.
For what it’s worth, here’s a different opinion. It was a mess but for the wrong reasons IMO. All was well until after MLV played his solo said. Then the guy whose name no one caught went on. He played for 40 minutes and at 11 pm, it was terrible timing. No one knew him and it was not captivating IMO. Took the wind right out of the room. In fact that guy ended up playgg as long as glorietta, who played 40 mins also. No music started before 10 FYI.
Oh, the ending to that Mumford set was great. That whole set was great. I know a lot of y'all hate on Mumford, but they knew and understood the specialness of Newport and added to it.
What time did Deer Tick openers take stage tonight and last night? Trying to figure out when to leave the fest tomorrow as we have yet to get out of the parking lot before 8:45.
Mumford turned out really great! I don’t remember the last time I’ve seen basically the entire crowd on their feet. Brandi on Awake My Soul and The Boxer was an excellent choice. Maggie Rogers as well. That version of Alaska was both fantastic and really cool for her. The Radiohead cover with Phoebe was a little off, but I appreciated it. Jerry Douglas is always welcome. And of course that finale...
I guess we’ll be seeing Mavis at the Change set tonight? They should just let her lead the dang thing

Based on these descriptions, last night's Glorietta show was better... though still ran very late. Seems to be a trend with Parlor shows that they don't really get started until around 10:00. I did learn that Shakey Graves had originally been planned to be there, but had to back out due to the timing and needing to head to Pickathon. The acts consisted of David Ramirez solo, Noah Gunderson solo, JP Harris solo, Langhorne Slim/Twain and a woman who's name I didn't catch, and then Glorietta. They were all really good acts.
The crowd was not a Newport crowd in that a lot of them were talking during the acts, there was a drunk older guy trying to pick up on the women half his age and playing Harmonica while JP Harris was playing guitar. Luckily there is nobody I would want more on stage to handle a drunk fan than JP Harris.
Langhorne said that he will have Twain on the steel guitar for his Harbor Stage show today. The best part was when Twain sang with Langhorn on their final song... they sound really good together.
Was really surprised by David Ramirez because I hadn't listened to him much, but like his performance a lot. Noah Gunderson was fantastic as well. Did a cover of Sade's 'By Your Side' that was beautiful.
