If we’re holding out hope for a pop singer, I’m pulling for Taylor Swift.
I still think she may have a surprise guest set earlier in the day. How about a Taylor Swift cover of Ryan Adams’ cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989?
Why not just book Ryan Adams and have him do the 1979 cover album front-to-back.
Because I’d rather see my favorite pop singer do them, in a fairly intimate setting, as she mingles with the other folk singers (hell, for all we know we could end up with a Taylor Goldsmith produced Taylor Swift folk album; the Civil Wars and Taylor Swift joint song was pretty great; I recall hoping she was going to embrace the folk after that). Although I would totally see Ryan Adams play that album in its entirety.

T-Swizzle playing acoustically at Newport would be pretty special. She could prove her musicianship to everybody and gain CRED.

I'd venture that that's something she absolutely gives no shits about. Especially if it came at the cost of a MASSIVE pay cut

The best part is that it wouldn’t come at a massive pay cut. She’s playing three nights in Boston the same weekend. If she was paid for it, it’d be extra money on an already big weekend.
Taylor Swift is a garbage person and does not belong at Newport.
I would like to hear details. Part of me thinks we attach her age and gender to comments like this. Jack White is a pompous asshole and we don’t attack him. Prince, Chuck Berry, etc. So she plays the victim card... she probably is often a victim. Most female musicians are under attack.

I spent 2 pages last year defending my belief that a Chuck Berry tribute was icky.

I'll just quote what I already said in the hl'er thread

Many have attacked him (especially after all those articles about him using those cell-phone pouches at shows this tour). And Katy has made it clear she's no fan of him/his music.
I don't think they have, which in my mind makes Jack White unlikely.
I have to agree with you, personally, which sucks for Bonnaroo. I personally can’t stand Jack White, think he bloooows, but he would’ve been a saving grace for a lot of people.
Katy for sure has her reasons for not liking some and in this case isn't anything to do with age/gender. Maybe some others do but at she stays consistent with her artist opinions lol

I do know that Katy has negative opinions of Chuck Berry. That was a bad example. I meant people in general.
I think it’s wrong to call someone a garbage human unless they really are a garbage human (and even then it’s still debatable. If you’re trying to change someone’s behaviors for the better, you don’t do it by calling them garbage.).
I’m not trying to defend some of her questionable behaviors, but anybody in the spotlight is going to slip up. Hers are pretty grey compared to many others in the spotlight doing much worse.

Garbage is obvious hyperbole, she's just not a very good person who is a very bad influence on young girls and harms the music industry as a whole with dangerous underlying racial narrative.
Well. We're not getting Taylor Swift. Jack White, I don't know. He's a fine musician, calculating as hell in creating his persona...hard to find the perfect person.
After the last announcement I guess anything goes. Maybe we get Portugal. The Man. Reel Big Fish. Ed Sheeran. Jimmy Page (who I love) with more plagiarized music. And, man, that would still be a great lineup.
And, of course, the 10 same revolving doors who keep playing the festival -- and maintain its continuity.
But unsure what Newport fans want. Do we really want the Dawes and Langhorne and Deer Tick every year? Do we want Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran? I have no answers. Be nice to see a little more Baez, I would think. But I will not second guess Jay.
Thank goodness, its about the people. And this is the best group of fans of any running festival I know. And whomever plays seems to come away a somewhat changed musician, and person. Or so we hope.

I'd welcome this so much. One of my favorite releases they did was an all-acoustic version of their album The Satanic Satanist. And they've done plenty of other "acoustic" versions of their hits.

I think for the most part the Newport crowd, at least the ones on the internet, are relatively down for the interesting direction Jay Sweet seems to be going in right now. Dawes and Deer Tick probably aren't going away any time soon, but their dominance at the festival seems to have faded. To be fair, it's just reflecting where the "folk" scene has gone. The resurgence of good country has shaken things up a bit
Someone here wondered the other day whether the recent folk music revival is over. Someone else wondered what Newport Folk fans want. I believe events like NFF are more desired and needed than ever. Technology is changing the world. Events like NFF offer an antidote to the commercialism and turmoil of the modern world. Fans are tripping over themselves to get tickets for a reason. They need a break from this increasingly fast paced world. Whether going to a microbrewery or buying an old vinyl record we crave a simpler time. A time when there may have been less but it was better quality. Newport give us that. Slow down. Enjoy the music. Don't worry about bands playing more than once. Who cares. They're usually amazing and playing a new album. There's a bunch of stages. See someone new. Maybe one day you can tell someone you saw them when they were unknown. We all want something different. Newport has a well thought out template. Their lineups are designed to satisfy varied tastes. I recommend watching two or three videos of each lineup announcement. Even if you already know the band. You might find an amazing live performance you never saw before. One upside to modern technology is we can use it to create a community that preserves great music. The NFF has the best lineup and musical experiences you'll get anywhere. If you want the mega commerical pop headliners just sell your tickets and go to that kind of festival. You'll be happier and someone who missed out on getting tickets will get to go.
