This is so weird to me that you guys think Sturgill is bigger than Passenger...maybe within the festival circuit, but in terms of mainstream success I don't think it's even close. Ask any random person on the street and they probably know the song "Let Her Go" ...it has 1.7Billion with a "B" plays on youtube. Sturgills higest is 6.5 million. Sturgills top 5 on youtube = 6.5M, 4M, 2.8M, 2.3M, 2.2M. Passenger = 1.7B, 103M, 96M, 24M, 23M.
Hell there are a half dozen covers of passenger songs with more views than Sturgill Simpson. Passenger's albums, especially All the Little Lights have all sold way better than Sturgill. Sturgill has been getting billed higher this year, so maybe he will see some more mainstream success in the next year or so, but right now I definitely give the edge to Passenger.

The difference is in the type of fans. Sure someone on the street is more likely to know Let Her Go. It was a moderate radio hit 5-6 years ago, so that's not surprising. But I doubt most of the people who know that song know that it's by an artist called Passenger. I think Sturgill is a much bigger presence in the music world, whether or not people are playing his songs as much.
Because we're discussing billing in a live setting, that's the best metric to be using and as evidenced by the venues each artist performs at, Passenger's fans aren't rushing to buy tickets the same way Sturgill's fans are. If both were on a traditional festival lineup, Passenger would be billed below Sturgill, probably by a line or two. And to be fair, I think festivals have been overbilling Sturgill lately.
I just don't see passion around Passenger. And I don't see him getting any more popular. His first album sounds like filler for a Spotify "coffee shop" playlist and "Let Her Go" got popular because it came out right after Ed Sheeran's "A Team" hit it big. I'll have to check out his latest though

When Passenger played the DMV, he played 9:30 club (capacity 1,200). When Sturgill played, he played Merriweather (Capacity 20K). Even if Sturgill sold out 1/4 of MPP (he didn't), that's still 4 times as many fans.

I agree that comparing song plays weirdly doesn't always line up with top billing. Looking at Forecastle, Vance Joy is billed under Father John Misty, which seems like a similar situation to Sturgill/Passenger.

I'm a big big Sturgill fan. I own all his albums. But Passenger is bigger. He's big international. It's not often (if ever?) Newport gets anyone with songs over 1.7 billions views. Granted YouTube views ain't a fair comparison, especially for artists who predated it's existence like Roger Waters. Again, I love Sturgill and have since Newport turned me onto him in 2015. I'm delighted his stock is rising fast and hope it continues. Passenger has been out of limelight a little while but you could not avoid him a few years ago. It doesn't matter which is bigger. I'm happy they're both playing.

Sturgill is headlining Friday, Passenger will close quad Sunday - calling it
Regina Spektor played the Quad last year. When I saw her in CT earlier last year she had two tour buses plus also played the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade last year. The Quad gets big acts. Graham Nash played it for example. There are acts that could go either main or quad. I'd image both Passenger and Sturgill are main stage but you never know. I hoped Nora Jones would be Quad. Beautiful vocals plus piano deserves more intimate setting in my opinion. Having said that Regina's piano set felt rushed at the Quad due to the traffic jam late start last year.
Jeez, sorry to get everyone fired up haha. Clearly not a popular opinion.
Just for fun, I'm watching how many people like the Twitter announcements and SS got 417. We'll check back in later today to see how many Passenger gets. But also, that doesn't mean anything because the lineup/headliners are most likely already set.
That is an interesting way to look at it. From that perspective we have
Sturgill in the lead with 417
Courtney Barnett: 234
Tyler Childress: 160
Gary Clark Jr: 125
Everyone else below 100
And...
as of right now, the least amount of likes goes to.... Passenger with 35.
