And that, folks, is the first half of the 2018 Newport Folk Festival lineup!
(Assuming, of course, that none of these are museum artists)
Every year I can't decide what my favorite thing about Newport is--the festival itself, or this moment when the lineup is about half out and I've got a whole list of new music to enjoy.
This year I'm feeling Darlingside, Pheobe Bridgers, Jen Cloher and Fantastic Negrito. The wife is enjoying Caamp, Colter Wall and War and Treaty. Add in the old favorites (Barnett, Isbell, Simpson, Lone Bellow) and figure you'd pay around $30 a show to see them all individually--ticket has already paid for itself and we have, what, maybe one headliner?

Starting to get properly hyped now.
I think this switch to every day announcements has upped my excitement even more. Especially because they've just been on a role with these middle-of-the-lineup names.
Just posted this over in the new music thread but this new Ray LaMontagne song is solid.
Back to old school Ray and goddamn it's nice to hear him singing like this again. And I was a fan of Ouroboros
Yea, I'm a fan of his last few albums where he was clearly trying something different out but I'm happy to hear him going back to the sound that hooked me originally. His shows have always been a good time.

Yeah this reminded me how his voice just hits you when things are stripped back like this
As someone who is more of an indie/folk lover I have to say this lineup is extremely underwhelming for my tastes. I can't believe I'm the only one who prefers this genre and I hope we're not left out this year. The only announcement I was actually excited about was Hamilton/Rostrum. I know I'll have a good time but I'm not anticipating a lot of conflicts.

The lineup is pretty underwhelming for my tastes as well - namely the blues, soul and some folk. I'll be patient and wait it out to see if they'll add anyone I like for Saturday, but it's looking like I'm going to either sell my day pass on Lyte or try to trade for a Sunday ticket.

Listen to Daniel Norgren and Curtis Harding, they're both great, especially Curtis Harding I think he's freaking fantastic.

I'm digging the first half of the lineup. My lineup discoveries that I'm stoked for: Daniel Norgren, This is the Kit, and Charlie Parr. I think it's shaping up nicely so far.

I don't hate the lineup but I think the acts are tipped toward country-ish/blues/ jam band music. Phoebe Bridgers,Fantastic Negrito, Hamilton, Courtney are more to my likes. Can't please everyone I know.

I'd think The Weather Station, Twain, and This Is The Kit would all be up your alley.
Also I'm expecting some more of those indie acts to start showing up.
Father John Misty, Lucius, Sharon Van Etten, Lord Huron, and Bon Iver/Justin Vernon all seem likely.
Would imagine we'll see the MMJ guys in some form given how empty their schedule is this year

given how poopy the crowd response on this last tour to any song from ob or sn (which was 80% of the set), this is the right business move for him. you should have seen how many people completely checked out and started heavily drinking and talking after he finished his opening acoustic set. cant imagine that was fun for him on an entire tour.

I’m with you 100%. I like Courtney Barnett a lot on record but found her set at Newport to be a little underwhelming. Colter Wall has become probably my number one set to see even though I typically don’t like the style (Completely out on Isbell/Sturgill). I enjoyed what I heard of Rachael and Vilray and Curtis Harding is great... McPherson too.
I really need the FJM, Deer Tick, Lucius, Bon Iver announcements to come down.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

I saw Courtney at roo and Newport that year. The roo show was a lot better. Something was off at Newport.

Half way point and 8 or 9 acts I’m very excited about with a few others that provided I can walk my fat ass over to the stage I’ll certainly be smiling but the unexpected can keep me at a certain location at times during the weekend or maybe that’s just the beer tokens making noise. I think we have a month of great adds in front of us!

This is very interesting take because I don't see a single jam band type artist.

Maybe jam band is the wrong term. I like to be challenged intellectually and emotionally by music. When I think of moments that gave me chills I think of Patti Smith and the power of her lyrics or the first time FJM was there and his outrageousness or the otherworldly beauty of Lucluc or the raw emotion of John Moreland. I could go on with other WOW moments and I'm hoping there are some of those challenges this year. So far Fantastic Negrito seems like a standout.

It's crazy that Lucius has been at the festival every year I have been, but only on the actual lineup in 2014. They're overdue for an official set I'd think. I'd be surprised if FJM was back although I'm not sure why I feel that way, and I wouldn't be disappointed.
I have complicated feelings about Bon Iver. I desperately want to see him, period, and I'm so invested in the festival that I love to see them grab buzzy artists like that. But I too left Sufjan for Brandi Carlile in 2015, shattering my indie rock bonafides. I feel like I'd feel the same about Bon Iver--not the right venue.
I'm almost envious of the people who aren't that hyped about the lineup. I definitely risk over-hyping myself every year. I also always wish there would be a day where I didn't much care about anyone playing the main stages so I could post up in the museum stage for a full day without intense FOMO.

FJM has a new album coming, a standing invite to play, and is playing Panorama the same weekend, hence my confidence he'll be back.
I definitely get what you're saying about Bon Iver. It's why I'd prefer Justin playing solo, preferably closing the Quad, though he's probably too big for that.

If FJM plays that’ll be a no brainer skip for me, which will help with conflict.
