Last year I signed up for Lyte like a month after tickets sold out and I was number 112 or something in line and I got the tickets in June. They go very fast in the two months leading up to the festival when the scalpers realize they aren't going to make any money on Stubhub. #37 is better than not too bad. You're as good as there. Breathe easy.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Back for Year 3! That said, nearly half our group is now in the Lyte line. It definitely sold out really fast -- I got in right at 10AM, but it seemed like a crapshoot for friends who got in around 10:02 or 10:03.
Will definitely consider the pre-sale/Newport Foundation deal next year, as I would probably be a wreck right now if I had to rely on Lyte. (I know it’s supposed to be easy, but it would stress me out until I got the confirmation!).
That + our Airbnb is confirmed, so I can finally rest easy after a very intense morning!

I was in right at 10 and had no problem at all. Friends were in at 10:02 and had to refresh a bunch of times before finally getting tickets. I think most of my group got tickets.
Where is your airbnb?? We are looking now for one (should have done it months ago!) There aren't too many left that are under 1,000 dollars a night under 30 minutes from the fort. We have two rooms at the motel 6 we have been staying in as back up but would love a house!

For those of you looking for hotels, I'd suggest checking up around Warwick or Seekonk. It's further away but cheaper than whatever you'd find on the island.
Now begins the waiting game until we start seeing artist announcements - this is my big Christmas gift this year, and it'll be like mini-Christmases all over again every time they announce a new artist
I submitted my bingo card nominations, but I'm not sure how many of them were realistic lol

Ours is in Portsmouth (about 30 minutes from Fort Adams); we've been there the last two years and like being a little farther away + secluded (but I'm always so envious of those who can easily attend aftershows!). We should have looked earlier too; it was the last one in the area under $1K (got it for about $700 per night). We enjoy doing the house, as it's easy to grill out together for dinner and hang after a long day in the sun.

yeah that's awesome - We never do the after shows so that's not really an issue. We have a group of about 12 people and are currently eyeing a place off the island in Narraganset - we usually end up hanging out in the parking lot after the show to grill and wait out sitting in the traffic since we don't do the after shows then by the time we get back to the hotel by the time everyone shows we hit bed (you'd think we were super grandmas -- we aren't even 30!) Last year we did end up going out for food in Newport one night because it looked like rain friday night.
I love the idea of having a house to hang out in after the show instead of the tiny space in our motel 6 room - we cram 6 in one room to save money!

Did you check out HomeAway or VRBO? Friends recommended those. But highly advise against Craigslist; a few friends got scammed out of $700 a few years ago during NFF.
Was on precisely at 10 when the website went down for a few moments and then was open for business, so I lucked out. But this Newport Foundation pre-sale thing is upsetting when I see tickets being sold by scalpers days ago. If Newport cannot better control this system, admit that it plays right in the hands of scalpers, and control it better, or dump it. Btw -- scalpers can sometimes be tracked down. I feel badly for those of you who could not get tickets because of greedy turds who paid for the guarantee and then cured it into a nice profit.
I still advocate a rotating system of sales over several days; limiting the number to 4 per day; a side concert in a large venue similar to Newport Jazz; and even reserving some for contests later in the year. The good new, as I keep saying, is Lyte. I was in the 200's last year in eary spring, but sometime in June, I believe, the numbers dropped quickly. I also suspect it may be easier to request fewer tickets on Lyte. Not sure how it works, but the one ticket I requested for Sunday was a lot easier to attain than the 3 for Saturday.

I'm pretty sure the tickets that were popping up on resale sites were posted in speculation of today. Foundation members were only allowed to purchase 2 tickets and there were less than 1000 members. I joined knowing that the anxiety of today was coming and that I would be helping to put instruments into classrooms. For me it was a win, win. I also now hope to be grandfathered into renewing my membership next year seeing how today went. lol. Fingers crossed for everyone waiting for tickets!

I'm all for supporting the festival foundation but I think the system is flawed in the fact that only people who were at the festival were able to take advantage of the offer. Most people probably were already Newport alumni and knew the advantage of presale tickets. When the tickets went on sale today it was the equivalent of a black Friday stampede. I think a lot of the tickets sold today will end up on one resale place or another. I know I was in panic mode. I had to buy individual days and got locked out of Saturday. This is my sixth time buying tickets and the worse experience yet.

The "problem" is that the festival has gotten hugely popular, and the Fort can only hold so many people. They aren't selling any less tickets. Their resale system is the best that I've ever dealt with. This was the worst ticket buying year since last year, which was the hardest since the year before. 10,000 person capacity is TINY. It's just gonna get more and more stressful to get tickets.
I don't know what the answer is. Maybe making it a two weekend festival? That would be hard also because, with the rolling lineup announcements there would always be regrets about which weekend you had tickets for. Or you would have a lot of people going to both weekends!

The fact that only people who were at the festival last year were able to take advantage of the offer actually helps prevent the scalper scenario you describe. If they made the offer available to everyone outside of the festival, then scalpers could have bought the memberships. Scalpers post on ticket sites without actual tickets all the time. I think very few, if any, of those tickets that you see on the ticket sites are from members who had access to the pre-sale. Newport is doing more than any other festival to try to combat ticket scalping, and I think that should be acknowledged and appreciated.

I agree they do a good job. I think a lot of people were just very frustrated yesterday including me. And I was thinking more of people who bought tickets in panic because maybe someone would want to go then will have them up for sale. My mind wasn't going toward scalpers as much.

My understanding is that Melanie is exactly right. I'm with the others that say it's unlikely any tickets already for resale are from Folk Fans who signed up for the presale. This article is a pretty good read on how the resale market works these days. The TL;DR is that it's basically a speculative market where the real deal scalpers post tickets before they even exist and count on getting the tickets and making good when they actually go on sale.

I personally would be completely opposed to having multiple weekends as I feel that will cause great harm to the intimacy that we've all come to love about Newport.
Raising the ticket prices may reduce some of the demand on the ticket release day, but that's effectively what they've done with the Foundation membership program. Yes, there are some positive feel-good things that the membership fees support, but a huge selling point is the pre-sale access to tickets (if not the main/only selling point for a number of folks). The fact that it was made available only to attendees of the festival last year is a good way to help open up opportunities to "loyal" attendees as opposed to making it available to all. I wish there were better/other ways to open the enrollment to other previous attendees, but any others I think of would be too convoluted to implement or would still be susceptible to allowing scalpers to sneak in as well.
The only area that I feel needs to be addressed is on the eventbrite platform (and this goes for most all other ticket vendor sites as well) in that they need to come up with a much better process for handling high demand for tickets. Why they don't have you just select the number of tickets you want and then queue you until that amount becomes available and then given a minute or two to confirm you still want them once x tickets become available before offering them up to the next person in line is beyond me. Constantly refreshing (after the sale has gone live) is a completely unnecessary thing to require users to have to do these days and the frustration beween seeing x tickets being "available" and then having those tickets snatched by someone else before your next page loads is extremely frustrating and a completely solvable issue. Any frustrations with the ticket sales need to be focused on eventbrite and relayed directly to them.
That being said, this is my fifth year in a row to buy tickets on launch day and I've never once had a struggle getting the tickets. (After show tickets are a different beast altogether for a number of reasons)
I personally dislike the queueing system. I have never had success landing a ticket for a high demand event that puts you in an online queue. I am not sure why; I think it takes some of the skill out of it. Not to mention, a browser crash or a broken link from the traffic dooms you in the queue. At least when I ran into a broken link on Wednesday, I just quickly refreshed.

I agree with you 100% - but personally, I'll take Eventbrite any day over Ticketmaster.
I'm not sure what the best course of action would be to fix this - the Newport Folk Festival has become immensely popular, and they'll only allow so many people into the Fort. However, I feel like their partnership with Lyte has helped a lot in getting tickets to true fans, as opposed to scalpers.
It blows my mind how quickly the tickets sell out, but considering they can sell out tickets in a single day (or a matter of an hour) without a single idea of who is playing - it's a testament to the quality of the festival, year after year.

Still say limit the sale to 4 per day. And add a venue such as the International Tennis Hall of Fame indoor/outdoor stadium used by Newport Jazz. I believe the concerts are held on Thursday or Friday night? And include headliners who also play the Fort. However, do agree that tickets I saw on third party sites may not have yet existed.
soooooooooo when are tedeschi trucks coming back? This year? Maybe? Please? Jay?
They just tore down the Orpheum and it's only night 1!
I've been hoping for them since before I started going. I wasn't there the last time they played, but I just imagine them crushing a Newport set.
I saw their closing show of the Beacon run last month and they sound the best I've heard them. They ended with Derek and Trey Anastasio doing a fucking 30 min "Mountain Jam"

I'm glad you had a great time! I'll be there tomorrow and I can't wait It'll be my third time seeing them and going with my brother, who's also a huge fan. I'd love to see them at Newport!

I know a bunch of high demand shows are doing the whole Ticketmaster fan to fan thing - I just recently saw Bruce Springsteen on Broadway - and the way that worked was you had to register for tickets and then hope you somehow got a code and then still had to log on and try to get tickets. It sucks and I really hope they never decide to do that. Its all about luck and if you don't get a code you don't even have a chance.
I'd be a HUGE supporter of Tedeschi Trucks Band - I've seen them at festivals twice and I'm hoping to see them again in NYC this winter. Susan is unreal.
