From Rolling Stone Jaime Wyatt Sounds Like: Vintage California country that's equal parts humor and humility, with a few middle fingers thrown in for good measure For Fans of: Margo Price, Elizabeth Cook, outlaw country artists who have actually served time Why You Should Pay Attention: Los Angeles country singer Jaime Wyatt has seen a thing or two – after getting her first record deal at 17, she developed a drug problem, robbed her dealer and landed in the county jail for eight months. She never stopped writing, though, and her new album Felony Blues offers a fresh, thoughtful take on prison songs from someone who knows firsthand about being on the wrong side of the law. She Says: "I'm just stoked I'm not in jail or rehab right now. And I'm very proud of this record. It was easier to make this record than it was to live it ... Other folks have had it way harder than me as far as oppression and injustice, but I still had to do eight months in county for robbing a dealer, so I was pretty pissed. Still, if you have the attitude towards the court and the cops of 'You can't keep me down. I'm living it up on easy street here in jail, getting three free meals a day and a chauffeur to court. And thanks for getting my mail,' it sort of makes things easier."
Wow, last night’s Tedeschi Trucks Band show was smokin’! They’d be an incredible fit at Newport and would love to see them there
Last night’s show highlights besides “The Storm”, “I Want More (with a Soul Sacrifice outro) and “Learn How to Love” included:
- Two Allman Brothers standards: Statesboro Blues & Whipping Post - Stellar covers of Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright”, Derek and the Dominos “Keep On Growing”, Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” and Leon Russel’s “A Song For You”
Anyone on here remember a Boston music blog called 'Boston Through My Eyes'. The editor used to predict who'd play Newport Folk Festival each year. He used to post his predictions in January. He hit it out of the park each year. He divided it into three categories. Small, medium and large acts. His record on the big headliner acts wasn't great but his small and medium list ended up almost matching the eventual finalized lineups. I think he ended up moving to the Midwest and doesn't do the blog anymore. Pity. His knowledge and research was awesome. I miss that blog. Is there anything similar out there that I'm missing?

Yeah he was great. Met him a couple times and was bummed to see him leave the area, even though I don't live there anymore either. Not sure about any other similar blogs or sites, but I think we do a pretty solid job right here.

Yeah, he had some hits. But also had a share of misses as well. I agree, we do solid here.

It was his blog shutting down that made me go find this one. I've discovered lots of really amazing info on here. A lot of people here are way more musically knowledgeable than I am but I'm learning. The contribution I made early this year I'm most proud of was wondering whether Roger Waters would show up to sing 'Hello In There' with John Prine. Someone pointed out he was playing somewhere in the Midwest that weekend so I ruled it out. Guess my mistake was forgetting that often the musicians love the festival as much as us fans. I hope when the lineup starts rolling out people don't start complaining if they ain't getting who they want. Often folks start second guessing the eventual lineup. I know the feeling. You get a good run and then there's a few announcements you ain't crazy about so start doubting. Well Sunday night this year should serve as a reminder. My take away from this year was that there were two lineups. The official lineup and the unannounced lineup. This year's unannounced lineup was insane. I couldn't even keep up. I remember being at a stage and realizing the guy with the beard was Justin Vernon. It was like that all weekend.
I went to the NPR Music 10th Anniversary concert on Saturday, and Bon Iver did a surprise three song set. It was great, definitely made me regret not going to his full show at the Anthem the previous night. Jeff Tweedy and Margo Price also did short acoustic sets. But this one singer, Gaby Moreno, really blew me away. Hadn't heard of her before that, but she would kill at Newport.

I saw her open for the Punch Brothers a couple years ago and have been hoping she'd make her way to the Fort ever since.
I don't know if I should ruin the surprise for anybody who wants to be surprised but I just did some digging on the Bon Iver reddit and the shows on this Northeast run are not entirely as advertised. I for one am a little bit disappointed that it wasn't made clear at the time of purchasing. I still probably would have purchased the tickets but I think I would have had to think about it.
The last few Bon Iver shows of the current tour have been solo sets. There is no opener. The tickets were sold as "Bon Iver" but there is no backing band. a fan posted that they spoke with Justin after a show for 15 minutes and he said the remainder of this run will be solo. He's also severely limiting his sets to about 4 songs off of 22, A Million which is a huge blow to me because 22 is my favorite Bon Iver album and the only one I haven't seen live. Looking at setlists online I notice he had been playing 16 song sets with the band every night until they randomly had a 9 song set and then the next show he started performing solo. I can't help but wonder if there was a quarrel of some sort within the band.
Of course now I'm setting myself up to be blown away because I've lowered my expectations.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher
Question for everyone... what other festivals have the most cross-over with Newport? I will be transparent in that I am asking this for my mega-Bingo strategy, but will contribute all research to the group after the Bingo deadline.

None. Newport doesn't play by the rules.
You're best bet is to just find out which acts that fit the Newport oeuvre and are getting buzz/touring next year. Most of the fests that are around the same time as Newport won't announce their lineups until after the deadline anyways

EDIT: After looking on the Bon Iver Facebook page I noticed that they have been referencing Justin’s “2 a Billion” initiative for the recent shows. I remember from a while back he had been performing solo shows with this in mind to empower women and children. This makes sense because he did say in the conversation that he had with that fan on reddit that 22 a Million is too masculine for this leg of the tour and he’s playing his more feminine songs. If this is the case I can’t help but feel misled knowing that these were planned solo sets dubbed as Bon Iver sets. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll still love it.

I think I remembered seeing people speculate that Sylvan Esso might play in 2017. They just announced some tour dates for next summer. They are in Boston on the 28th, and are currently open the 27th and 29th.

I’m kinda surprised they are playing BHBP. That’s a pretty large venue.

Unfortunately I feel like those dates make them more likely for Panorama than Newport, and it'd probably be tough to do both since that would mean they'd be playing 8 shows in a row without a day off. Hoping I'm wrong though. If only to have Amelia and Nick around the Fort + playing aftershows
The Anthem is a pretty big one in DC too. But it looks like they sold out two nights at 9:30 this spring, so I guess it makes sense. I'd imagine Panorama would probably make more sense too.
Red Rocks too. Definitely stretching their popularity on this run, but more power to them. I'm sure they'll do pretty well, especially if they bring some solid openers with them

I think you're probably right, but my biggest hope for this year is that the HGM guys show up, and Sylvan Esso does a live Echo Mountain Sessions at Newport.
hold steady on thursday night at bk bowl was unreal. incredible energy, best show of the 7 i've have privilege to see. would love to see craig at the fort this year with any project he so chooses. sadly i did not hear about frank turner opening night 4 until last minute and already had Tick tickets that night. that being said, frank is one of my favorites and with a new album coming, i could see him hitting the fort (in his own words in an email he said "if they call us, we'll be there).
deer tick on saturday was great but the crowd at bk steel was pretty terrible. im sure im spoiled after the fort and after parties but the crowd didn't seem to know the new stuff, or really pay attn to the old stuff. the band was tight but the long two-set show seemed uninteresting to many in attendance. blame the crowd, not the band.
was set for pinegrove on weds, but all know how that ended up. swapping in a Hiss show on thursday to help save my musical soul...

I unfortunately missed out on all of the shows I was hoping for (Hold Steady, Angel Olsen, Deer Tick, St. Vincent) but I'll be at both Hiss shows.
Recommend checking out Delicate Steve at Elsewhere tomorrow night if you're looking to replace that Pinegrove show.
