There are eight principal human characters in Oxenfree. Two are never seen in-game, but they'll feature on the show in flashbacks. Alex is the main character. She brings a radio to the island and opens up the portal to the alternate dimension with it. We see the events almost entirely through her eyes.

While on a road trip through a desert, mild-mannered high-school teacher Ralph Hinkley (Donald Glover) is greeted by extraterrestrials, who present him with an extraordinary red flying suit that imbues him with uncanny powers. Learning of the suit, high-strung FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Bradley Whitford) convinces Ralph to help him fight crime. Unfortunately, Ralph has lost the instructions that accompany the suit. Ralph's girlfriend, attorney Pam Davidson (Karen Gillan), also knows of his secret life as a superhero.

Jonas is Alex's new stepbrother and companion for most of the show's events. The two are just meeting as the show begins, but they realize they'll have to bond quickly if they're to survive. He's still haunted by the death of his mother from cancer, one of two deaths that allow Alex and Jonas to enter each other's lives. The show's villains (villain?) will use a recording of his mom's voice to toy with and taunt him...and use him to toy with Alex.
