Frankly, the vast majority of festival/concert attendees really don't give a fuck about the man-woman ratio on stage, regardless of what all the think-pieces say.
Kinda depressing, isn’t it?
It's similar to everybody saying how we should support local artists, and then not many people showing up to DIY events.

I think it's great if a festival books more female artists, but at the same time I'm not going to buy a ticket solely because of that. I'm going to decide based on if there are a lot of artists there I like.

Agreed 100%....like just because there is a female fronted band or female artists doesn't make the music better or make me want to attend the festival more. I'll repeat what I had said as soon as the rumors of Janet at Pano came out but Janet Jackson is just not a draw. I'd bet Pano would likely be cancelled by now if not for their hubris of the organizers not wanting to take the L against GovBall

Yes, that was sarcasm. Also I think this has a lot more to do with this fest getting a late start setting dates/booking talent/announcing a lineup as it does the lineup itself.
Instead of putting all of the blame on Janet, might as well put some of it on Florence too. Should’ve just left her as a sub. We don’t really who didn’t pull their weight anyways.
Edit: I know Janet has a huge fan base (those who are saying she doesn’t are crazy), but her fans might not want to pay the big ticket cost that comes with a multi-genre fest. Who knows.
Oh well, last year was phenomenal.

Don't know what her draw is everywhere else, but here in NYC she's huge. Last tour she did two nights at an arena. Especially now that she's back after like a 3 year hiatus, I would've thought she'd be a huge draw.
Some idiot on Twitter said that it was a mistake to go too much in the direction of gender balance and how the 2017 lineup was great.... completely forgetting the fact that 2 of the 4 headliners and 4 of the top 8 overall last year were... female.

Didn’t sell out a smaller Shed in DC her last tour

I doubt OSL will get cancelled given its strong brand and local residents with excess disposable income, but I am genuinely curious how the headliners have an effect on sales.
God, I had no idea how expensive tickets were for this. Absolutely not worth it for a two day festival, especially with that top line.
I think there are a couple of other factors here that haven't been talked much about. The first is the amount of upper-card overlap from Coachella. People who care about St. Vincent, Daniel Caesar and Kali Uchis just had a chance to see them at the region's biggest festival. The XX and Future have hit the LA area hard. There were obviously some gems in the line-up but when you're asking that much for a ticket, you can't be wasting budget on acts that are likely overtapped in the area.
The final part is I just don't think the typical festival demographic has a strong sense of nostalgia for Janet. Her fanbase is much different, and probably would prefer to wait and see her on her own tour than in a festival setting. You can get away with a booking like that when you're Coachella and sell out no matter what, but it was a misguided booking for a festival that's in a very precarious position after the past year.

The sense I've gotten from my friends in the area is that Outside Lands is an event in the Bay area, with many people just going for the experience and the setting. I don't think FYF had anywhere near that kind of blind loyalty.

This for sure.
New York, LA, wherever...95% of people under the age of 30 don't care at all about Janet Jackson. She doesn't have any newer music the people know and she doesn't have any of that weird urban-outfitters nostalgia that Fleetwood, Billy Joel, or even Lionel Richie have. In the past 15 year I know her more for her role in anti-Justin Timberlake think pieces and memes than I do for any of her music.
