Has anyone ever seen Alt-j? I enjoy them but not sure if they are worth watching. Have heard bad things.
I've always found them a bit boring. Caught their ridiculously crowded set last time they were at Bonnaroo but I was so far back (aka at the fountain) that it did nothing to improve my impression. Plenty of people like them, though, and the crowd under the tent seemed to enjoy the set.

I saw them on Halloween this year. Not exactly super high energy. They just stand there and play but the songs sound as good as you could want and they have a really good light show which helps a lot. Get close and you’ll love it. Far away and they’ll leave something to be disired.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

I have been really enjoying Alex Lahey and Pond, two names I’ve seen talked about on Inforoo a lot but hadn’t listened to much prior to the Roo lineup dropping. This Alex Lahey album is awesome.

I hope to catch them and will try and get up close. Hopefully they don't conflict with anyone else.
Muse is in a position to steal the show. I can’t imagine Eminem or The Killers will compare. It is both infuriating that they’re like 8 years late and exciting for all of you catching them for the first time. Maybe since they won’t be active much this year they won’t just phone this gig home (and by that I mean maybe you guys will get a good setlist).

Depends what you're looking for in a show, but I enjoyed myself more seeing The Killers last weekend than I did when I saw Muse a couple years ago.

The more I listen to Muse the more excited I get for that set. I’ve never really listened to them much outside of their radio singles but they definitely have my favorite music of the three headliners.
Where does a beginner start with them and what is the book on them? Are they a band with 2-4 strong albums that faded into irrelevance and that is why there is a general tone of disappointment around here about the booking?

Definitely. Their output has gradually gotten worse, but the live show was always their strong suit.
I feel like you can't go wrong with Absolution and Origin of Symmetry. Those are still favored among Muse fans. Black Holes and The Resistance were their most commercially successful albums (and still good imo). Things fall off at The 2nd Law. I think one should just start with Origin and work their way through chronologically.

For me I was a big fan of the first 4 albums. And I agree Orgin of Symmetry and Absolution(2nd and 3rd albums respectively) are the strongest 2. I also enjoy Showbiz(debut) and Black Holes and Revelations(4th). That output after that isn’t terrible. Just not at the same level as their earlier albums.

Origin of Symmetry is my favorite album ever (see profile pic). It's totally unique to anything else I've heard. Muse were truly special back then. Nowadays they have more anthems and the lyrics have taken big steps back. But you can still find gems here and there. But yeah, Origin, Absolution, and Black Holes are all amazing front to back.
Edit: Btw if you listen to those 3 albums on Spotify, the last song on each is actually a B-side, not the closing track.

This "Tonalism" barn might be the best thing at Bonnaroo this year other than Bon Iver
yeah for all the shit they’re getting (and deserve) about recent lineups, it definitely feels like they’re trying to step up and make the “experience” different from what you can get at every other fest
Still crossing my fingers for actual late night sets but they’re otherwise giving some cool options this year
but I'd recommend Topaz Jones as a solid rapper on the list
This lineup is surprisingly deep. I've discovered some great stuff that even gets good buzz around the internet (pitchfork av club cos and the like) that just slipped me by
Also listening to the spotify playlist quite a few great house songs have popped up which i dig
post a list of this ish
i know pitchfork isn't the authority but here's some stuff I've found on the lower part of the lineup that has gotten positive reviews from them
as for house stuff, I've heard songs from (previously unknown to me) Shiba San, Justin Jay, Valentino Khan, and Billy Kenny. And honestly even that amount of house already makes the electronic lineup better than last year when the only decent electronic was pretty much Claude Von Stroke and Goldfish

Get to Heaven is typically accepted as Everything Everything’s best work and I highly recommend it.

You should listen to Radiohead
My wife is a big Muse fan and always gets mad when I call them a poor man's Radiohead.
I think their overall catalog is much better than the killers', and having seen both, I think their live show blows the killers out of the water.

A couple relevant stories:
When I went to college as a freshman, I was super excited about meeting people that were into exciting music and stuff I'd never heard before. What happened instead was everyone's favorite band was the Killers. It was tremendously disappointing. There were some people who liked Radiohead, but they also seemed to think that they were super edgy and out there for that reason. I remember getting into an argument with people and having to enlighten them to the fact that Kid A was a #1 album and went platinum in its first week. They straight up did not believe that this was possible.
My sophomore year, I was talking to a very pretentious architecture freshman who was a big fan of Muse. I distinctly remember him saying something along the lines of "you know, some people don't like Muse, because they don't get it. You actually have to be smart to enjoy their music."
I went to a good school with lots of brilliant people who all work really hard and are very successful (more successful than I am, for sure). However, a lot of those people are corny as fuck. Fortunately, I DJed at the radio station, which had programming that was so esoteric that none of the gen pop students cared about it. Unfortunately, in my junior year the university sold our badass radio tower, which had a range from Galveston to College Station on a good day, to the University of Houston so that they could play classical music.

Muse's post-Drones US tours were by far their worst. For some reason Muse has a terrible habit of playing consistently worse setlists in the US than anywhere else. They also seemed very low-energy. They're typically better at festivals, though, and their energy has been better lately.
